I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “stunning” (America Ferrera) YA novel about a teenager coming to terms with losing her sister and finding herself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican American home.

“Alive and crackling—a gritty tale wrapped in a page-turner. ”—The New York Times

Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents’ house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family.

But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga’s role.

Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.

But it’s not long before Julia discovers that Olga might not have been as perfect as everyone thought. With the help of her best friend Lorena, and her first love, first everything boyfriend Connor, Julia is determined to find out. Was Olga really what she seemed? Or was there more to her sister’s story? And either way, how can Julia even attempt to live up to a seemingly impossible ideal?

Amazing!. What a beautiful read. Brought me to tears multiple times, thank you for sharing your art with the world!

Impressed!. This reminds me so much of myself. It's completely relatable plus I love the random words in Spanish here and there!

Just beautiful. I cried and I laughed reading this book. It was a surprise since I never expected that it was going to be like this. I saw myself back at school with that hunger of going away to college. I related to Julia in so many ways. Can’t wait to see the upcoming film.

Perfect Story-telling. This novel was seamless and moved between difficult topics fluidly and poignantly. Julia felt so real and was a great narrator.

Inspirational 💕💪🏽. This book is Great for First-Gen students, and women who are surrounded by generational stigmas. Very inspiring!!

Hey. Great book. Couldn’t it it down. Love that I was able to find it at Target.

A must read!. I was reading the book like if I was reading about my life. Minus some events. Everything was relatable and I enjoyed having my heart tugged at every corner.

Such an amazing book. This is such an amazing book it teaches you a real lesson about life I cried most of the time I read it because it was a good hope other people could read it too.

WOW. Amazing and an important book for society. I think every Mexican woman and girl can relate to the main character and some of her struggles. I felt the emotion and pain. I love this book. Definitely worth the read.

Loved it. I cannot explain how closely I could relate to this book. Being a Mexican girl with depression, it described my experiences as if the author was writing this on my life. I laughed I cried, and I really, wholeheartedly recommend it.

Idk. As an actual Mexican immigrant, I relate to this but also some stuff is very inaccurate. Correction: The traditional 15th birthday party isn’t called a “quinceañera” It’s called “fiesta de quince años” and the “quinceañera” is the girl who’s turning 15. Also the portrayal of the Catholic Church is very inaccurate based on my experiences. But some of it is still very relatable. I guess we all have different experiences :)

Love, love, love. I was so sad when this book ended. From the first page I read I could not put it down. It reminded me of my childhood. The cultural writhing took me back to my childhood again!!! I loved this book and will be in my classroom for students to read!

Beautiful story -culture, life experiences & lessons. An amazing book about the life of a Mexican (American) teen who has such interesting experiences at such a young age. Her experiences and the lessons she learns are interwoven perfectly in this juxtaposition of feelings, thought, experiences, goals, culture, relationships, family and personal history. The cultural references provide the reader a deeper understanding of the experiences of a first generation individual- and Mexican culture. The constant literacy references also provide the reader a deeper understanding and leave room for interpretation of the characters and themes. A beautiful story that captures life experiences and relationships with ones family and self through words and metaphors. One of the best books I’ve read on a long time. As a Mexican American, first generation woman, I appreciate the connection I had. This book spoke to me and my people.

Deeply rooted.... Absolutely loved this book...thank you for pouring your soul into it and sharing it with all of us!!

A breath of fresh air and a walk down memory lane. This book was fantastic!! I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz but with a female protagonist. Way to go. This is the kind of books we need out right now. There are so many girls and women that will be able to relate to this book. Beautifully written. Will need to tell everyone about this book!!!

Great book ! Me encantó!. Really good book. It really makes you think about the guilt that some parents put on their kids and the pressure of society in Hispanic culture. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading.

So good. THIS IS A LITERAL MASTERPIECE. i love every part of it but i do wish we could’ve gotten more of her and boyfriend sorta. but i love how we see her at her lowest and how she rises up at the end it’s wonderful

Loved. Loved this book I could identify myself in some things

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. I love this book so much! It’s literally one of my favorite books and I can relate to a lot of the struggles Julia goes through. This book has got me wanting to read more again:))

MY NOW FAVORITE BOOK!!!. I have LITERALLY never related to a book more then now! I love this book and the topics it touched on. As a First generation Mexican American daughter its hard tbh and not a lot of people know that. Especially within out own families. Reading this book made me so happy because people like me and julia are being represented. I wish there were more books like this one with like different situations but that still covered first generation issues, traditions, and culture.

Blessing. It was a blessing to read this book. I read this book at such a perfect time in my life. Loved it all.

Relatable. This book was different for me but in a good way. I usually read mystery and crime books but this had a hint of it. I am also Mexican so I can relate to some things she was saying. I loved the whole book and the ending was amazing! Definitely recommend this book.

Great!!. This was a great book! Being Mexican myself and although I’m not a first-generation, there are still aspects of the book that are completely relatable. The characters are really brought to life and I think I tested up a total of 4 times while reading. Excellent choice.

Wonderful. It’s funny how so many people like myself can relate to Julia and her life journey. Reading this book made me feel as if I was looking into a glass mirror and viewing myself. The author did a wonderful job portraying the job of first generation Latina’s and the struggle that come with being one. I would deeply recommend this book. A page turner for sure, and a refreshing one as well.

I loved and enjoyed it!. Honestly I could relate a lot to this book I’m also a first generation Mexican American in my family. I did struggle a lot with getting along with my parents. However over time I learned how have empathy for them as like Julia with her parents. I really enjoyed this amazing book!! I would really recommend!

Bellísima historia.. This is such a beautiful story. I think we can all relate to this story in various ways. Even though it is sad, dramatic and at times troubling…just like life it leaves a sense of hope.

All Mexican daughters don’t speak Spanish. Hmm...everyone speaks Spanish and English but no speaks or identifies with any of the indigenous languages or customs still spoken by many, including some of our grandparents. Just so you know all Mexican daughters don’t speak just Spanish but apparently this book makes you believe that all Mexicans only speak Spanish and English.

Good writing. This was not necessarily a bad book, probably just not my taste. The author is clearly a great writer, she uses amazing figures of speech & very strong & vivid imagery (which I thoroughly enjoyed). I just believe the story is filled with a some unnecessary side information. Though I understand it’s needed to witness the characters growth. I believe the story doesn’t necessarily get good until the very end. Again I didn’t hate this book but I’d say I didn’t love it as well. Someone might greatly enjoy it! That being said no hate to the author & I’m glad I checked this book off my list.

Si se puede!. The definition of over coming generational traumas and winning. By finding yourself in the little that you got. Having friends & mentors that look past all the hurt and pain and lift you. Amazing story! I can relate being a 1st gen Mexican American. Not many of us make it out of the tradition of staying behind for your parents. In my story out of 3 only the youngest made it and it would have been devastating to see her settle for a mediocre life. As a older sibling it’s our responsibility to help them break the curses and always find yourself.

More stories like this need to be written. I couldn’t put it down. I’m so happy this story was told.

Soul-churning. This novel elicits profound emotions deep within the soul and it perfectly exemplifies the trying process of making a life when coming from nothing or worse. It was beautiful. Many growing girls - I’m sure - can agree that all of the topics this story touched on were relevant to personal feelings and though it displays the narrator undergoing trials and tribulations, it was almost an empowering awakening to the struggling mind. I really appreciate this author’s style.

Thank you for sharing your writing gift Erika. I was reading this book on my phone and my bf/partner/man asked. How are you? He didn’t know I was reading. My response was. “Great!! Because this book is giving me life!” As a woman who is first gen college grad of mexican heritage I loved every minute of it and could relate so much! And I think no matter your background this book might just give you life too!

I am not your perfect Mexican daughter. Honestly best book ever for teens they can really relate if there struggling thru a phase and teens actually find this book interesting i personally LOVE IT very cool and unique book.

YASSSSSSS THIS IS A MUST READ. This book is my favorite!!! I love Julia’s character!! Although I wouldn’t recommend this for kids.If you want to [understand] a Mexican daughter's life you have to read this!! Although her mom is too insulting Julia doesn’t give up on her mystery of Olga her sister (even though her mom locked olgas door!!! Btw Olga died 😔).Her friend Lorena thinks she’s crazy but Julia knows that she’s not,WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PERSEVERE AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS♥️💖💕❤️💜💙🌈🎗🏵😃🍀😁

Amazing !. I have not read a book in years because I have dyslexia and it’s hard to understand but I just finish reading this book by audio and it’s an amazing book wow I love this book so much !

Amazing book. Loved it so much! Very relatable. Finished it in 3 days. I was hooked.

Amazing Read. Loved the book. Could not put it down. Definitely recommend.

Que hermosura!. The beautiful and terrifying experiences of being a first generation Latine child is explained so wonderfully in this novel.

Great book!!. Whenever I’ve read YA books I’ve identified with details due to my own experiences in school, relationships, and life. However, this book allowed me to say “my tías are chismosas too!” or sympathize with they way immigrant parents worry and can’t comprehend the culture we are being raised in. There are so many things throughout the book that reminded me of my own life, or that of my family and friends. I wish there were more books like this that talked about real issues that are relevant to us as not only because of our age but culture as well!

One of the most beautiful books i’ve ever read!. I can’t begin to describe how amazing this book is. First of all, it’s great to see a book about a latina, & first generation American. This is a story about pain, about love, and about pursuing something bigger for ourselves. Thank you so much for writing this book!

Great Reading Even Beyond Youth Years. I feel privileged to be of Mexican American descent. I also love to read about the struggles of what it may have been like to be first generation. I think of how much was taken by being fourth generation, how much was gained. Erika Sanchez’s books have brought me to bursts of tears and laughter.

Amazing, beautiful, and relatable. I enjoyed this book, the author is brilliant. It sure was a page turner, I was hooked. When readying what Julia went through with her mom, I felt all that. I was able to relate found myself speechless, I truly can’t completely a proper sentence because this book was excellent, it truly leaves you without words.

Relatable. Touching, heartfelt, relatable. A very good read! If only this book was written when I was a 15... can’t wait to pass it on to my nieces !
