Mausoleum by Hans Magnus Enzensberger Book Summary
Enzensberger è autore poliedrico: saggista, pamphlettista, romanziere, scrittore per l'infanzia, memorialista. Però forse i suoi libri entrati piú vigorosamente fra i classici del Novecento sono quelli di poesia. E Mausoleum, uscito in Germania nel 1975, è una pietra miliare del suo itinerario poetico. È un libro costituito da trentasette ballate dedicate ad altrettanti personaggi che hanno fatto, come dice il sottotitolo, «la storia del progresso »: da Giovanni de' Dondi che nel Trecento costruí l'orologio di Padova a un altro italiano, Ugo Cerletti, che sei secoli dopo inventò l'elettroshock. In mezzo: Campanella, Leibnitz, Linneo e tanti altri pensatori e scienziati.
Se già Leopardi diffidava delle «magnifiche sorti e progressive» del mondo, Enzensberger ha uno sguardo ancora piú perplesso sulla modernità. Per lui l'aspirazione al dominio totale della natura ha creato un modello destinato a portare l'umanità al disastro. E a volte ha forgiato un tipo di scienziato squilibrato, sadico, dai deliri onnipotenti, come quello della ballata dedicata a Lazzaro Spallanzani che si eccitava compiendo mostruosità sugli animali «a fini di studio».
