Febrero de 1862. En medio de la sangrienta guerra civil que divide al país en dos, el hijo de doce años del presidente Lincoln está gravemente enfermo. Los periódicos de la época recogen a un Lincoln deshecho por la pena que visita la tumba en varias ocasiones para guardar el cuerpo de su hijo.
A partir de este hecho histórico, Saunders despliega una historia inolvidable sobre el amor y la pérdida que se adentra en el territorio de lo sobrenatural, allí donde tiene cabida desde lo terrorífico hasta lo hilarante. Willie Lincoln se halla en un estado intermedio entre la vida y la muerte, el llamado Bardo según la tradición tibetana. En este limbo, donde los fantasmas se reúnen para compadecerse y reírse de lo que dejaron atrás, una lucha de dimensiones titánicas surge de lo más profundo del alma del pequeño Willie.
