Due fratelli afroamericani, John Edgar e Robert, crescono insieme in un quartiere di Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, ma le loro vite prendono ben presto due direzioni diverse. Il 15 novembre 1975 Robert, il fratello minore, eroinomane e perennemente a caccia di soldi, tenta l’assalto a un camion pieno di televisori rubati: si scatena una sparatoria in seguito alla quale un uomo rimane perde la vita. Ricercato per rapina a mano armata e omicidio, dopo tre mesi di latitanza si presenta a casa di John Edgar – che è diventato scrittore e insegna letteratura all’università – e il giorno seguente viene arrestato. Il processo si conclude con una condanna all’ergastolo, anche se durante la rapina Robert non ha sparato. Nel corso delle visite in carcere, tra i due fratelli si instaura il dialogo che forse non hanno mai avuto, in un percorso di reciproco riscatto che vedrà il suo epilogo su una nota di profonda consapevolezza. Alternando il suo stile colto, elegante, e la vivace e potente lingua di strada del fratello, Wideman ci regala un memoir sfaccettato e ricco di fascino, tra biografia familiare e storia carceraria: una riflessione lucida sulla razza e le ineguaglianze, il retaggio di violenza che la società americana si porta nel DNA e la forza travolgente dei legami di sangue.
