Toll by Matt Gemmell Book Summary

THE PERFECT WEAPON LAY BURIED FOR 70 YEARS. NOW ITS DEADLY POWER HAS BEEN UNLEASHED.

The Norwegian Sea: a group of eco-activists disappear from their vessel. Only their dental fillings remain.

Owl Mountains, Poland: a wealthy environmentalist resurrects a secret experiment forgotten since the close of the Second World War, determined to heal our ravaged planet.

When a dossier finds its way to the desk of Dr. Neil Aldridge, the elite EU special forces team codenamed KESTREL is drawn into a dangerous pursuit across Europe and beyond, to prevent a cull of Earth's greatest threat: humanity.

As the final countdown begins, Captain Jessica Greenwood faces the ultimate choice: fight to prevent the dark future ahead, or help make it happen…

A page-turning technological thriller with elements of fringe science and conspiracy, TOLL is book 2 in the KESTREL action-adventure thriller series, but can also be read as a stand-alone novel.

Fun!. Great read. Quick pace. Characters you care about and a story line that could almost be real today. Looking forward to #3

Better than the first book in series. Toll is an improvement over Changer, the author’s first book. Plot is tighter, though it still has its problems. Character development is more assured, except for a not-very-interesting romantic subplot, which doesn’t serve the plot. Author is developing as a writer; we’ll see what future books bring in terms of craft and new takes on tried-and-true thriller tropes.

Incredible sequel. “The second book is the hardest,” but Gemmell delivered remarkably well. This installation kept all the excitement of the original book while showing growth and adding a more nuanced, complicated antagonist. Definitely would recommend.

A classically-styled spy-thriller set in our present day poses hard questions of our future. Book Two of Matt Gemmell’s KESTREL series is a fantastic successor to his premiere novel, CHANGER. As Gemmell’s writing has matured so has the KESTREL team. They are a more cohesive team, and their solid relationship and devotion to each other shines throughout the pages. TOLL has an excellent blend of espionage, thrill-inducing chases and combat, and a villain you almost find yourself rooting for. Almost. Gemmell is keen to keep the story rooted in the world presently around us, posing hard questions about how humanity is doing as the caretakers of this planet we call home. He also draws upon historical fact and lore to accentuate the story and pose an imminent threat, while also keeping a distant threat in view. TOLL was a page-turner, and the story unfolds without giving too much away too early on.

Fast, action-packed thriller. The narrative is snappy, the characters engaging and the locations enticing. A great read from start to finish. Toll is an excellent follow-up to Changer, the first novel in the Kestrel series. I cant wait for the next

Amazing sequel. The book was amazing. No idea how you came up with the plot or can write so eloquently. Awesome choice or words too in some the descriptions at the beginning of the book. And finally, this is probably the first book I’ve read with no errors. I mean literally no spelling mistakes, misplaced words or alternative thoughts left in. Simply brilliant. Well done Matt!!

Another fine action-packed thrill ride. A page turner from Matt, finished in two days I think! Another global disaster to be averted by the Kestrel team - the characters are well drawn and despite the sometimes fantastical material, Matt’s precise attention to detail gives everything a strongly believable feel. It draws its canvas wider that the simple good guys/bad guys conflict and raises many very pertinent issues which are woven into the story. It’s food for thought even after putting the book to bed. I felt that, much more than Changer, there’s much more of Matt in this novel in terms of physical places and personal consideration of world issues. I loved this extra dimension. If I didn’t give it five stars it was only because Changer was such an almost unbearably gripping tale which had me ‘firmly by throat’ in places and Toll never reached that level of nerve-shredding tension. However, a really enjoyable read in its own right and definitely recommended.
