Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1876–1960), Autor des Risale-i Nur (Botschaft des Lichts), musste eine schwere Last schultern. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts waren alte Denkweisen von einem neuen Leben hinweggefegt worden. Die Vergangenheit würde nie mehr wiederkehren, und die Zukunft würde sich völlig von ihr unterscheiden. Der Glaube musste künftig in einer ganz neuen Sprache vermittelt werden.
Bediuzzamans Leben lässt sich in drei Phasen unterteilen. In jeder dieser Phasen setzte er sich mit aller Kraft für den Glauben ein. Er wurde Zeitzeuge des größten Wandels, der die islamische Welt jemals erfasst hat, und erlebte ihre freimütige Imitation einer fremden Zivilisation ebenso mit wie ihre Bemühungen um eine Erneuerung der Religion. Mit seinem Leben hinterließ er ein Vorbild, an dem sich die Menschen fortan orientieren konnten, und er zeigte ihnen einen Weg aus jener Krise.
Bediuzzamans Biographie ist ohne jeden Zweifel eine genauere Betrachtung wert. Mit dem Risale-i Nur, der Frucht seines Lebenswerks, legte er den Grundstein für eine koranische Aufklärung im Zeitalter der Moderne.
