Les vingt épîtres qui forment le livre II des Carmina de Michel de L’Hospital (1505-1573), composées entre 1546 et 1560, en pleine ascension politique du poète, sont adressées au roi Henri II, à Marguerite de France, à des prélats (cardinaux de Lorraine et Du Bellay), à des lettrés (Macrin, Mondoré), ainsi qu’à des hommes de loi (Olivier, Du Faur). Repensant son époque à la lumière des auteurs antiques, L’Hospital mêle satire du milieu judiciaire et de la cour, éloge du sage stoïcien et de l’otium, réflexions politiques (sur le souverain idéal et sur les rapports du particulier avec le pouvoir), morales (éloges paradoxaux de la maladie et de la guerre, éthique de l’éloquence judiciaire, attitude idéale face à la mort d’un proche) et littéraires (éloge de Ronsard, affirmation de la supériorité des lettres, considérations sur le métier de poète). Se mettant constamment en scène, il se peint en figure d’autorité et, faisant alterner sermo horatien et sermon chrétien, développe une réflexion éthique pour lui-même et pour les autres. L’édition, fondée sur les manuscrits et les plaquettes collationnés avec les éditions imprimées de 1558 et 1732, offre le texte latin de chaque épître accompagné d’une traduction française en stiques, d’une analyse historique et poétique et d’un commentaire, ainsi qu’une introduction, des notices biographiques sur les destinataires, un index des lieux, des personnes et des matières.
