Where Was God That Year by Sanjeev Bagga Book Summary
The British rule over India was in its final throes. The Indians had been fighting two wars. They were part of British war effort in the World War Two. Gandhi with his nonviolent creed had managed to convince the British that they had to leave. The British tired after the self destructive World War were not willing to leave India just yet.
An internal war was being waged in India. It was a war between Gandhi’s vision that India belonged to all religious groups who could coexist in peace & Muslims led by Jinnah who insisted that the Muslims & Hindus could not live together & were two nations.
Ahmed, Iqbal & Raghu were childhood friends who grew up in a small village in Punjab during those tumultuous times. The events of their times caught them in an orgy of violence & mayhem. Iqbal & Raghu lost faith in humanity as riots broke out with inhuman violence, rapes and murders.
They & their families were forced to abandon their cherished homes, land and move to Delhi from west Punjab which became part of Pakistan. It was not easy to abandon their native village where generations of their families had lived & toiled. They were surrounded by clouds of hatred. Iqbal lost all his brothers in this genocide.
In this story of redemption they once again found happiness & peace. Their wounds healed with time & their faith was restored in human decency.
Gandhi drank the chalise of poison of hatred to guide an India that strived hard to live his vision & not that of Jinnah.
