Edmund Leamy war ein irischer Patriot, dem das Schicksal seines Landes sehr am Herzen lag. Im Buch findet man Geschichten von ihm, die vorher noch nicht veröffentlicht wurden. Sie sind teils traurig oder komisch, teils gruselig oder eher banal. Sie leben weniger von literarischem Tiefgang, sind aber unbedingt etwas für den Irlandfan oder den, der es noch werden will. Die meisten Handlungen sind in die vielen Konflikte und Kriege eingebettet und in das irische Leben einer vergangenen Zeit, in das man tief eintaucht, was die eigentlichen Geschehnisse oft zur Nebensache macht. Es gibt aber auch solche Erzählungen, die eher 'neutraler' Natur sind.
Man wird in alte Zeiten zurückversetzt, die das Land geprägt haben. Insgesamt wird man Irland und den Kampf um seine Freiheit besser verstehen und - je nach Kenntnisstand - einiges Historisches dazugelernt haben.
Hier findet man alles wieder: Kleeblatt, Heidekraut und andere Gewächse der Grünen Insel, charakteristische Landschaften, die Harfe, die Irischen Brigaden, die Rapparees, die Whiteboys, die Yeoman, Geschichten vom irischen Freiheitskampf, mystische Figuren aus dem Feenreich oder Schwarzbrenner - die eigene Herstellung des ,Poitin' oder , Poteen' - Schnaps aus Getreide, Kartoffeln oder Zuckersirup ist immer noch heimlicher irischer Nationalsport - seit 1661.
