阿蘭·亞歷山大·米爾恩,1882年1月18日出生於倫敦。他在家裡面排行老三,也是最小的一個兒子。他從兩歲開始就能夠進行獨立閱讀,在開始上學的時候就能夠寫一些詩歌、散文和一些簡短幽默的作品。隨後他進入了劍橋大學,在那裡他負責對學生的畢業論文進行編輯。
1920年,他的兒子小米爾恩出生了,兒子的出生給了他很大的激勵,他曾寫道:
作為一個作家
就是要將自己的眼中所見寫下來
於是——這就是我想給予孩子們的
一本本美如間奏曲的童書:
我在寫下它們的時候,幾乎沒有去想
我的所有與鋼筆墨水相伴的歲月
竟都是和我送給孩子們的這四本小書一起度過
在小米爾恩一歲的時候,他收到了來自英國哈羅德百貨公司的禮物:一個毛茸茸的小熊,隨後又有了一個小老虎,一隻小豬和一頭小驢。看到這些,阿蘭·米爾恩產生了一個想法,就是要以這些兒童玩具為角色寫成一本孩子們看的書。在1924年,他出版了第一本詩歌集《當我們很小的時候》。這本書在北美和歐洲都產生了巨大反響。1926年,《小熊維尼阿噗》開始發行,這本書奠定了米爾恩在兒童圖書界的地位。1927年,第二本詩集《現在我們六歲了》發行。1928年,《阿噗角的小屋》面世。而我們熟知的可愛的維尼熊的形象則是由恩斯特·H·夏帕爾德創作的,他曾親自登門拜訪米爾恩,並將這四本書中的人物創作成了栩栩如生的動畫。
此後,小熊維尼系列風靡全球。人們一提到米爾恩就會想到他是一個偉大的兒童文學作家,實際上,他也寫過一些戲劇、偵探小說以及自傳等等。
