The Rose Code by Kate Quinn Book Summary

“The reigning queen of historical fiction” --  Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Huntress and The Alice Network returns with another heart-stopping World War II story of three female code breakers at Bletchley Park and the spy they must root out after the war is over.

1940. As England prepares to fight the Nazis, three very different women answer the call to mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes. Vivacious debutante Osla is the girl who has everything—beauty, wealth, and the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses—but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, and puts her fluent German to use as a translator of decoded enemy secrets. Imperious self-made Mab, product of east-end London poverty, works the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and looks for a socially advantageous husband. Both Osla and Mab are quick to see the potential in local village spinster Beth, whose shyness conceals a brilliant facility with puzzles, and soon Beth spreads her wings as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts. But war, loss, and the impossible pressure of secrecy will tear the three apart.

1947. As the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip whips post-war Britain into a fever, three friends-turned-enemies are reunited by a mysterious encrypted letter--the key to which lies buried in the long-ago betrayal that destroyed their friendship and left one of them confined to an asylum. A mysterious traitor has emerged from the shadows of their Bletchley Park past, and now Osla, Mab, and Beth must resurrect their old alliance and crack one last code together. But each petal they remove from the rose code brings danger--and their true enemy--closer...

Page turner. Couldn’t put it down.

Another amazing book by Kate Quinn. Captivating and charming. My favorite book by this author - I hated for it to end!

Good read. Fascinating story. But a little long.

Great book. Good characters, good story, great book. I enjoyed the history and the plot. Very exciting and fun.

Loved it. Very well written and interesting

Great books by a great author. The story, written by a women, principally about women was mesmerizing. When a book brings me to tears I feel that the author has succeeded! Kate Quinn is such an author. Thank you for many wonderful hours of reading.

Amazing story. I didn’t know this story until I read this book. I love this author. I’ve read all four books by this author. I want to her other ones.

Long, drawn out and too many characters. I wanted to like this book, but it is long and should have ended at like page 500. Just goes in and on

Great story about secrets. Not just state secrets but personal secrets between friends and family. Puts you right in the war at home.

Just…wow. What an incredible journey … I truly am nearly speechless and in such awe of this place and these people… may their work and sacrifice never be forgotten.

Great story- hard to put down!. An excellent read! Fascinating historical fiction with interesting, believable characters and intriguing plot twists that keep you riveted. Highly recommend — I loved the way the story is centered on and evolves around relationships while offering a glimpse into the crucial roles women filled in WWII.

Fantastic. Fabulous read, great characters. Loved every page and learned a lot about this real life group of women. Hated to see it end!

Great story. Right up there with Alice. Love the history and characters.

So hard to put down. I loved the characters, even the dog. I made the mistake of picking this up at 1 am to help me sleep. I was still entranced at 6 am when my alarm went off.

Rose Code. Very interesting semi true story. I found the writing style tedious. Jumping back and forth between present and past. I learned a lot about this secret group of people who gave up a lot to defend England

I could hardly stand to keep reading it and yet couldn’t put it down!!. Fantastic characters! This book was funny, interesting, and utterly heartbreaking. Just when I thought I couldn’t take anymore and put the book away, I’d pick it up again and read some more! I have never had such a love/hate relationship with a book. This is Kate Quinn’s best book yet!

Rich characters. The characters are rich and continue to mature as the years pass. They are all so different. I am not often that surprised by plot twists, but this story provided many unexpected twists.

I couldn’t stop!. Quinn is a master storyteller with a gift for developing dynamic characters with whom the reader can really appreciate & for creating suspense! I highly recommend this book. War, like life, is not pretty or fair.

Fantastic read. Kate Quinn does it again.

Gem. Likable characters who are all different and fascinating. Interesting to learn about Bletchley Park and Codebreakers processes.

Read it in 24 hours -. One of the best of this genre.... twists and turns and lots of good old gotchas..... smiled, laughed and cried a few tears here and there. What more can you ask of a book?

Powerful read. The topic of Bletchley Park has. Even popular in recent fiction, but this book adds so much vigor! It had me reading through the night! The switching time periods took a bit of getting used to, but the flow worked. Read it.

The Rose Code. I got lost in this novel. The story follows three very different women. Mab from Shoreditch who is determined to better her life. Beth with her brilliant mind and overbearing mother. Then there is Olsa the sassy debutante from Canada. Like so many others during this time, war creates unlikely friendships and can tear those friendships apart in a moment. The story pivots between the war years and the days leading up to the royal wedding in 1947. The story ties real events into the story and gives us readers an idea of what life was like at top secret Bletchley Park. Although we will never know everything. There are plot twists and intrigue along the way. The story is an excellent choice if you are interested in the stories of women during war and a peek into the world of code breaking.

Wow…just. Wow.. This has got to be one of the best reads I’ve had in quite some time. Phenomenal!

Rose gold. Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters won my heart. Love the historical context and accuracy. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Truly beautiful. This book grabbed onto my heart throughout the entire story. You truly fall in love with the characters and feel warmth to see them grow.

The Rose Code. This book was very well written. I fell in love with the characters and they were so believable it was like one got to know them. I am so looking forward to Kate Quinn’s next book which can’t be written fast enough.

Fabulous. I knew nothing about BP prior to reading. Characters jumped off the pages. The writing is likely the best I’ve ever read, wonderful adjectives and so very intricate but not boring descriptions of everything. I absolutely loved it.

Intriguing. Excellent story, intriguing and mysterious, page-turner. Loved every minute of this exciting, interesting story.

Historical fiction deep dive. This book seems great for historical fiction super fans. I’ve dabbled in historical fiction and am not that familiar with the author’s other works. So I felt like I was in a bit over my head with this epic read, which I felt dragged on at times. I was also lost with some of the historical British references and lingo, even though I lived in England for a few years myself. Although I appreciated how well-written the story was.

Great novel. Well written, captivating! I couldn’t put it down.

Impressive authenticity. Brilliant women accomplishing brilliant work in spite of the norms of their generation. It is on their shoulders that women of the twenty first century stand. Bless your souls

Great historical fiction. It was a very good book but just a little bit too long.

Best book I ever read!. I’ve never been more captivated by characters in a book like this before. In a word, breathless comes to mind as I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Thank you, Kate Quinn!!!

One of my favorites. I loved this book, could not put it down. I am drawn to WWII books and different views from the different countries involved. Learning about the decoding was something else very new to me and so informative, so involved. Development of these characters by the author was so thorough and well done, I felt like they were my friends and/or acquaintances in real life.

Hard to pick a favorite. My first book by Kate Quinn was The Huntress. Since then I have read 4 more books by her and have not been disappointed

Great story; mediocre writing. Entertaining story about important historic moment. At times it felt like a trashy novel and some of the leaps in the story defied logic but you couldn’t help but care about the characters and want to know what happens to them.

The Rose Code. An interesting look at women code breakers during WW2
