Crying in H Mart Book Reviews
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner Book Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the indie rock sensation known as Japanese Breakfast, an unforgettable memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American—“in losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself” (NPR). • CELEBRATING OVER ONE YEAR ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.
As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.
Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.

Boring. 85% of the book is talking about food! So boring!
Cried while reading. Spoiler alert: get ready to cry like a baby! It’s like reading about my own life. I thought so much about my mom, my family, my childhood. So much nostalgia. Loved reading it yet it was so difficult to keep reading because it was so much heart breaking.
A Beautiful Story. I stumbled across Japanese Breakfast a few weeks ago and then this book. I’ve read few books that captured me from the very beginning and wouldn’t let go until the end. This is a beautiful story wonderfully written. This book has a soul.
Beautiful. A beautifully gripping book.
Not a fan.. What a whiny, self-involved person.
Im grabbing my mother. Wonderful book that made me feel heard from feelings I have as being half white and half Filipino. Made me cry and want to hold my mother to no end!
Ok. I am not sure I loved it, but it was readable and enjoyable at points.
What an amazing story!. This book makes me think a lot about my families, friends and those who I have known for many years. Especially for my parents who are getting older and weaker, I wonder what good memories I will remember when I need those sometime later. It was much fun to read so may Korean words and phrases in a single book(never seen before!), and I felt both warm and painful feelings like the author had toward her mom, dad, aunts and cousins. I was a little moved by how much love she had and returned to her families in many ways.
You’ll wanna call your momma. So touching, such a tear jerker. Even I missed her mom at the end of the book.
Perfect. Love it!
Had me crying every page. Honestly this book was soooo good. Jumpscare tho because you will literally cry every page.
The food that binds us.. This memoir by Michelle Zauner was gutting, inspiring, and a journey across the entire emotional spectrum. Zauner has shared with us a moving coming-of-age reflection that reminds us all of the folly of teenage angst and the circuitous path back to home. The passages are uniquely transparent and detailed in a way one could hope we could all be. As we tag along through this look back we co-navigate the emotional wreckage of loss and the triggering reminders everywhere of what we had and shared. Thanks to Zauner’s colorful descriptions we also get to vicariously taste and savior the culinary specialties of her Korean mother. Lastly, we get to delve deep down alongside her making our way through the maze of pain to find an exit to a spiritual rebirth & discovery unique to each of us. This memoir is very heavy and in parts emotionally gutting. At times, these were the most difficult emotional wastelands I’ve tried to make it through. That weight of painful experience is balanced by the inspiring search for closure, connection, celebration of life that we don’t often get to see, so up close and with such detail. I am grateful Michelle Zauner would open up her life to us in this way and I can see how cathartic it must have been to coalesce the emotions and complexity into this memoir.
Read it. I loved this book. I laughed and I cried.
Beautiful memoir. First memoir I have ever read and I could not have been happier. This is a lovely book detailed perfectly to help you really imagine the story. Highly recommend this read but eat before because you will be hungry!
Powerful, poignant, personal. A privilege to be able to read a very personal painful journey of navigating the complexity of mother-daughter relationship, growing up in a small town, finding oneself when mixed raced
Food, memories, family & loss. What a magical journey through the life of Michelle. Much like her music, she takes you on an exploration of rich feelings, tear streaked moments & stomach rumbling memories. Such a beautiful book about love, family, heartache and grief. But also of how to keep the memories of your loved one alive within you with traditions that span generations.
One of the best books I have ever read.. Absolutely amazing. This book changed my life for the better.
Powerful. A truly touching and powerful story that I have so much to relate. This book gives me so much strength and I know that I will read it again when that moment comes to me, but I know at least I have this to lean on.
Beautiful writing. The author is incredible at imagery and her ability to tell a compelling story is amazing.
Delightful and tragic. A must read. Rollercoaster of emotions and paints the human psyche so beautifully.
Amazing. I had to read this for my college writing class and am very glad I did the assignment! This book is the only book to have made me cry. I would highly suggest this book.
Addicting, sad and mouth watering. I enjoyed every moment of this book, I couldn’t put it down. It made me cry but most of all eat Korean food everyday I read it. The author has a way with painting beautiful pictures that make me feel I’m emerged in another country, tradition and world without even leaving my home.
Must Read. This utterly beautiful memoir had me in tears but I’m so much better for it! What a wonder tribute to her mother and it is so worthy of its place on the list of one of 2021’s best books! It is a definite must read!
Personal. This book was extremely sentimental and worth the read. I related to so many of the concepts and each memory was delivered so beautifully.

Captivating memoir. Very funny and deeply sad memoir about the bond between mother and daughter.
Poignant telling of mother daughter love. A honest telling of a very difficult experience that brought back many memories of loosing my own Mom. Michelle captures the subtle and nuanced relationship that is mother daughter beautifully and all the wonderful and challenging emotions tied between.
Life changing. I don’t typically care about things enough to write reviews - but I feel differently about this book. This was the most beautifully heartbreaking story I’ve ever read. It uncovered feelings and hurts within me that I didn’t know existed. Thank you Michelle for creating a language for my grief.
