Saksan miehitettyä Puolan toisen maailmansodan alussa Witold Pilecki vetäytyi monien muiden puolalaissotilaiden tavoin maan alle. Kesällä 1940 Pilecki otti vastaan uhkarohkean tehtävän ja soluttautui hiljattain perustetulle keskitysleirille selvittääkseen sinne koottujen maanmiestensä kohtalon. Pilecki järkyttyi näkemästään ja perusti leirille salaisen armeijan välittääkseen liittoutuneille tietoja natsien sotarikoksista. Hän vietti leirillä lopulta yli kaksi vuotta, ja Auschwitzin julmuudet alkoivat hiljalleen paljastua kaikessa kauheudessaan. Pileckin piti kuitenkin toteuttaa vielä yksi suunnitelma: paeta leiriltä.
Jack Fairweather on walesilainen toimittaja-kirjailija, joka toimi sotakirjeenvaihtajana brittijoukkojen mukana Yhdysvaltain ja Ison-Britannian liittouman hyökätessä Irakiin vuonna 2003. Mies joka murtautui Auschwitziin voitti vuoden 2019 parhaan elämäkerran Costa Book Awardin, ja siitä on tekeillä elokuva.
