Jennie Hall erzählt die Geschichte von Harald "Schönhaar" Halfdansson, dem ersten König von ganz Norwegen (ca. 850-932). Viele kennen diese Gestalt vermutlich aus der Fernsehserie "Vikings", dargestellt von Peter Franzen, dem es gelingt, sich gegen Ragnar Lothbroks Sohne Björn Ironside durchzusetzen. Der erste Abschnitt erzählt von Haralds wilder Jugend und dem Machtkampf, der zur Vereinigung Norwegens und zu seinem Aufstieg zum Thron führte - ein Ereignis, das eine Welle von Wikingerinvasionen und -expeditionen auslöste, weil viele seiner Gegner Norwegen verließen, um neue Siedlungen in Frankreich, Grönland, Island und anderswo zu schaffen. Der zweite Abschnitt erzählt die faszinierenden Geschichten von Erik dem Roten und Leif Eriksson und ihren Expeditionen nach Grönland und "Weinland" (Vinland) in Nordamerika. Die Erzählung wird im dritten Abschnitt durch den Übersetzer und Herausgeber mit zusätzlichen Erläuterungen zur Geschichte der Wikinger und zu den nordischen Sagas ergänzt.
