Couldn’t put it down. This book is one that you can start and not want to put down. It reminded me we think we know our family members and friends but we don’t. Excellent book!

Black Cake expanded my Caribbean taste. Every once in a while a book captures your soul. I’ve visited several islands in the Caribbean. I’ve acquired a love for island foods and cultures. Black Cake took me to a place full of the taste, smells and sights I so often relish. Not only is it a marvelous read, but the history, cultures, and heartbreak is a lesson itself. Rarely do I read a book more than once. But I can’t wait for the day while soaking up the Caribbean sun and reading Black Cake all over again.

Beautiful family story. As a family therapist I have such an appreciation for all this book holds. Family, culture, race, trauma, grief, friendship and love. Loved it from beginning to end!

Diaspora. I loved reading Charmaine Wilkerson novel Black Cake. Being born Trinidadian and growing up in the United States drew me very close to the to the main characters family and their willingness to overcome adversity. I must say this was a well written novel as a reader and being of the Caribbean Diaspora Thank You!!!!

Suspenseful. An easy read. A wonderfully told and moving story. It was hard to put it down.

A seriously good read!. Great plot, excellent character development, good pace, nice surprises, and all lose ends neatly tied up. Who could ask for more in a 1st novel? Not me.

This book pulls you in like the tide.... What a great storyline with characters that you can feel and smell. Reading this book is like partaking of the special holiday dessert you only eat once a year with family. I couldn't put it down. The writer pulls you in... sets down a plate and sits with you as you respond, “Mmmm, this is really good.” Well done.

A Tale Worth Another Read. Black Cake is a wonderful sprawling story that meticulously winds up the loose ends and weaves them back in. I didn’t want it to end.

Black cake. This was a confusing read. The characters, with so many changes in names and places and not in order of events as well as the story were hard to keep in order.

Had I known, I would have skipped this one. At times the story seemed never ending. It was also predictable in parts. Not what I expected.

Big ole mess. This book was pure drudgery in need of substantial editing. I didn’t care enough about any of the characters to really care how this turned out. I finished out of sheer willpower. For the life of me I can’t understand everyone’s praise for this book.

Great read.. Truly a great read. The dystopia of living poor with the combination of social persecution, is prevalent throughout this storyline. Loved this book, poignant and uplifting make this a “do not miss” read. Definite addition to your TBR List.

Black Cake. Black Cake is a page turner. Every character is complex and authentic as individuals are in many families. The novel reminds readers that we all have secrets that we keep and those we share. It also clarifies forgiveness in a real way. Forgiveness is based upon the realization that we have no way to change what has happened; we can only move forward when we accept that fact. Great read!

Worth it. A Beautiful read

Too long. The story was “drawn out” which means it was too long. It was like a never ending run on sentence. The story could have been modified to half of the pages. I will admit that it was culturally informative and offered relevant history on the diaspora but I could have saved my money.

Captivating. A great read. Kept my interest and I had trouble putting it down. The format of short chapters kept this book from being too wordy.

A Story About Heritage. This was BEAUTIFUL. I found myself on an emotional roller coaster. I was angry, sad, regretful, and happy all throughout this book. It’s a powerful story about a brother and sister finally learning the prices their parents (mainly their mom) had to pay for them to have the opportunities they did. It was also about the pressure that first generation Americans can feel when keeping these sacrifices in mind. Loved all the characters and loved the ending.
