JESS by Henry Rider Haggard Book Summary
Henry Rider Haggard (22. Juni 1856 - 14. Mai 1925) gilt als Pionier des literarischen Genres der sog. „Lost World“ oder auch „Lost Race“. 1885 erfolgte Haggards literarischer Durchbruch mit dem Roman ‚King Solomon‘s Mines‘ (1888 erschien die erste deutsche Buchausgabe) mit dem Jäger Allan Quatermain als Hauptakteur. Viele seiner Romane spielen in exotischen Ländern und handeln von untergegangenen Zivilisationen. Er verfasste auch zahlreiche historische Romane, die sich auf reale Ereignisse bezogen. Häufig verarbeitete Haggard eigene Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen und hielt sich auch mit Kritik an sozialen Missständen, politischem Handeln und militärischen Fehlentscheidungen nicht zurück. So übt er in dem 1887 erschienen Roman ‚Jess‘, der noch im selben Jahr als erster Haggard-Roman in Deutschland unter dem Titel: ‚Eine neue Judith‘ erschien, massive Kritik an dem Handeln der damaligen britischen Regierung während des 1. Burenkrieges und dem desaströsen Verhalten der britischen Armeeführung. Zu Lebzeiten zählte Haggard zu den erfolgreichsten englischen Autoren.
