“Where did you find her?” her father turned his attention to her rescuer.

He stood beside the door as if he couldn’t wait to get out of there as quickly as possible.

“In one of those illegal auctions downtown. Someone gave us an anonymous tip after recognising her. Obviously, the kidnappers had no idea who she was, or they would have sent a ransom note instead.”

“Pure luck. Do you hear that, Amalia?”

“Yes, Dad.”

“From now on, you’re staying at home. No more wandering around with these friends of yours at illicit parties or whatever you were up to.”

“But, Dad…”

“Why don’t you go and get some rest, my dear.”

She was only waiting for her father to add, ‘while the grown-ups do the talking.’ But she knew it was no sense arguing about him grounding her. It was better to leave it for now and renew the battle in a few days. By then, he would have cooled down.

“All right,” she said before she headed for the door. The man she only knew as Mr X, gave her a wink as he caught her eyes. “Thanks for the rescue,” she said. “I’m grateful you got me out of there even if you were such a jerk about it.”

“Was I?” He seemed to think it was funny. He grinned broadly.

“Yes. You could have gotten me out of there a lot sooner.” ‘Before I was forced to strip,’ she wanted to add, but if her father heard she’d been standing virtually naked on a stage, he would probably ground her for life.

He seemed to understand her meaning even if she didn’t say the words out loud.

“I had to make it look believable,” he said.

“Yeah right,” she said and remembered the hand he’d held over his crotch, fondling himself while he watched her take off her clothes. “Jerk,” she snorted and walked away. But she couldn’t resist pushing her elbow into his side as she passed him.

“Brat,” he said.

She wanted to stick her tongue out to him, but that would only reinforce his opinion of her.
