A Royal Farce by Laura Heffernan Book Summary

A ROYAL FARCE is the hilarious first book in the Retail to Riches series, which follows a plucky big box store employee on her journey from fighting to pay the bills to discovering she’s married royalty. Fans of Superstore will love this charming story.

"Heffernan has a way with the back-and-forth banter that I love to read between characters...This really was a sweet, funny, five-star experience!" - Sara, Chick Lit Central

Lila needs to pay her soul-crushing debt. Pierre needs a wife. Maybe they can help each other.

Once she finishes these renovations, Lila can finally sell the money pit she’d been living in and get back on her feet. But on box store wages, that'll take decades. Then her friend Pierre proposes the perfect solution.

Pierre needs a green card. If Lila marries him, he’ll pay to create her dream home. Win-win, right? One problem: who is going to believe the gorgeous, brilliant investment banker fell for plain little Lila? Everyone, if the two of them have any say in it.

Not even their closest friends or family can suspect the truth. Lila fakes the walk of shame, feigns total surprise at Pierre's staged public proposal, and plans their wedding with a single-minded determination rivaled only by her pet Yorkie begging for treats.

Their staged relationship is so perfect, Lila starts to believe it’s real. Then Pierre’s brother drops a bombshell: they are royalty, princes of a tiny island nation, and Lila is decidedly not princess material.

Now, instead of studs and sandpaper, Lila finds herself worrying about titles and tiaras. Will Lila get her happily ever after, or will her prince decide she's not so charming after all?

"Wonderful banter and I loved all the quirky characters." - Comfy Chair Books

"Heffernan has a way with the back-and-forth banter that I love to read between characters, and what I really like is when the protagonist discovers new things about themselves that really creates the character evolution I hold so dear to my heart." - The Book Bag

"If you enjoy the hugely popular royal romance genre then you will enjoy this :) ...Laura is a 'new to me' author and I really enjoyed her writing style." - Jo, Reading is My Bliss

A Royal Farce (Laura Heffernan) Book Reviews

Fun rom-com readSweet story with some fun little twists. Perfect for a beach read or a little weekend escape from the real world, while cozy on your own sofa. I look forward to more of this series—I’m sure they’ll be as fun as the author’s other books!.Score: 5/5

So fun!Love a good secret royal romance :0).Score: 5/5

Funny beach read with substanceThere are a ton of funny “chic lit” romances out there, especially those based on the “girl falls in love with royalty, but has no idea he’s royal” trope. I read this literally on a beach on vacation and just thought it’d be a fun, frothy beach read. I was pleasantly surprised to find it more than that. The heroine was smart and issue-oriented (without the book being preachy). The author managed to get her to have a romance without sacrificing who she is. In fact, she was able to find out more about herself through her relationship. Very satisfying beach read that’s definitely a cut above the others in the genre..Score: 5/5

Nostalgic for BostonThis was a quick and enjoyable read. It had the right mix of romantic fantasy, sexual tension, humor, and real life situations like running late for work and bickering with family. The setting of Boston added a lot of local flavor. I’m looking forward to reading her other books..Score: 5/5

On bended knee…Everyone loves a love story. And nothing is as romantic as someone professing their love on bended knee. As someone who is old & has had knee replacement, a bended knee is a very generous gesture. Love is love. And sometimes love hurts. But love is always worth it!.Score: 5/5

Farcical But FunOf course royal babes aren’t wandering around looking for ordinary protagonists buried in home renovations to marry…even for a visa. But this was an enjoyable journey and easy read. Relax and read this over your holiday..Score: 3/5

Confused y everyone loves thisFairly boring and literally does not feel like ur reading a romance. i only read abt 75% so maybe it picks up at the end but there is zero tension or chemistry. some scenes feel repetitive nd most of the characters interactions feel inconsequential. pierre has no personality nd it feels like he says like 2 words the whole book. some parts were def amusing but the book drags too much to be fun or exciting. in general it just feels kinda hollow. lol it rly isnt terrible but i felt bamboozled by all the great reviews..Score: 2/5

A quick, fun read! This story was so fun that I couldn’t put it down! I couldn’t wait to see what challenges they would overcome before they realized what was right in front of them. I can’t wait for the next one!.Score: 5/5

Fun and fancy!I enjoyed the heck out of this book - it was great escapism!.Score: 5/5

A warm read for a cold day“My dream question-popping probably didn’t involve being covered in construction dust and the word ‘felony.’” Lila is up to her eyeballs in student debt and the home renovation project her brother had bamboozled her into undertaking. Pierre’s work visa is expiring. Marrying each other could solve all of their problems. Instead, they inherit a host of new ones. Much of the book’s tension builds from the actions of their family members, people who have failed to support them throughout their lives. Thankfully, Lila and Pierre have chosen families—best friends and housemates—who are at the ready to help when things get tricky. Lila and Pierre are easy to fall for, and their reasons to resist falling for each other despite how perfect they are together remain plausible through each twist and turn in the story. “A Royal Farce” is a delightful mashup of the fake relationship and the romance between a royal and a commoner tropes. Add in a friends-to-lover plot line (they’re next-door neighbors!) plus lots of wit and heart, and you have a fun, heart-warming read..Score: 5/5

Laugh out loud funnyI received an early copy of this book. Lila is an intelligent law school dropout working for a large box chain store because she doesn't know what she wants to do with her life. It's definitely not law. When her super cute neighbor/friend asks her to commit a felony and marry him, she has no idea what she's getting herself into (except it's illegal), but she says yes. So I don't give any spoilers, let's just say she finds out secrets about him that would blow anyone's mind. Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. It's laugh out loud funny and well-written with dimensional, diverse characters. A wonderful addition to anyone's library!!.Score: 5/5
