Ricardo Palma comenzó a publicar sus Tradiciones en 1860. Sin embargo, las Tradiciones en salsa verde y otros textos, al parecer manuscritas desde 1901 y transcritas en 1904, no se escribieron para ser publicadas.
En razón de esto último, el autor solicitaba a su amigo Carlos Basadre la mayor discreción. Quería únicamente que se difundieran entre un grupo muy selecto que no fuera
«gente mojigata, que se escandaliza no con las acciones malas sino con las palabras crudas. La moral no reside en la epidermis».
La autocensura de Palma condenó su libro a la clandestinidad, marcándolo bajo el estigma de lo prohibido. Palma temía publicar estas «tradiciones».
El mismo título Tradiciones en salsa verde y otros textos sugiere que nos encontramos ante una obra condimentada con aliño picante, con ingredientes pícaros, obscenos, lascivos y sobre todo inmorales. Textos cargados de picardía que hoy nadie debe privarse de leer. Verdaderos testimonios de la historia, costumbres y alegría de su pueblo.
Ricardo Palma (1833-1919) poeta, dramaturgo, historiador y filólogo peruano es célebre, sobre todo, por sus Tradiciones Peruanas, editadas también por Linkgua Ediciones. Esta es la obra literaria más importante del siglo XIX en la narrativa peruana. En ella Palma nos da su visión histórica, principalmente del Perú virreinal con sus fanatismos, lances de honor y limitaciones.
