Frankopan, a diferencia de la mayoría de historiadores de la Primera Cruzada que centran sus estudios en el papado y sus guerreros en Occidente, dirige su mirada hacia los acontecimientos de Oriente, en particular los de Constantinopla, sede del Imperio bizantino cristiano. El resultado es revelador: el verdadero instigador de la Primera Cruzada fue el emperador Alejo I Comneno, quien, en el año 1095, con su reinado bajo asedio de los turcos y a punto de colapsar, suplicó al papa que le prestase apoyo militar. Posteriormente, la victoria del Vaticano consolidó el poder papal, mientras que Constantinopla nunca se recuperó y tanto Alejo como Bizancio quedaron relegados a los márgenes de la historia.
