Als "Friedens-Bertha" wurde sie von Gegnern verulkt – dabei war sie erstens eine Adelige und zweitens eine sehr kluge Frau. Hartnäckig und mit guten Argumenten setzte sie sich für den Frieden ein. Den Krieg hatte sie schon als Kind eines Generals kennengelernt, in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in Prag. Sie wandte sich dem Schöngeistigen zu – und verliebte sich in Wien in den sieben Jahre jüngeren Arthur von Suttner. Mit ihm lebte sie einige Jahre in Georgien. Dort entdeckte sie ihre Leidenschaft für das Schreiben, verfasste für österreichische Zeitungen Essays. Der 1877 wütende russisch-türkische Krieg empörte sie. Zurück in Österreich, wurde sie zur überzeugten Pazifistin. Ihr Roman "Die Waffen nieder!" wurde internationaler Bestseller; sie schilderte darin die Absurdität und die Leiden des Krieges aus der Sicht einer Frau. Und sie trat dafür ein, dass sich die Friedenstifterinnen und Friedensstifter aller Länder vereinen. Bertha von Suttner wurde zur weltweit bekannten Friedenskämpferin, nahm an Friedenskongressen teil, gründete Friedensgesellschaften, auch die "Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft". Heute, wo wieder in Europa der Krieg tobt, ein hochaktuelles Buch.
