A Promised Land by Barack Obama Book Summary

A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making—from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEE • NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times • NPR • The Guardian • Marie Claire

In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency—a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office.

Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune’s Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden.

A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective—the story of one man’s bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of “hope and change,” and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible.

This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama’s conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

Greatest President Ever. Here is a man that operated with integrity, dignity and respect for all human kind. This book details the thought process in his decisions and how it would affect all kind. This is why there were no scandals during his presidency. Now for all those that follow, we see a sharp contrast of a person with a moral compass versus one who only look out for his personal gain. No matter the truth!

Obama: the W.O.R.S.T.. How could he sleep at night with all the stuff he supports?!?! Obama was the worst possible president ever, and the most corrupt of them all. He is very racist, and he’s here bad. Hear me out: absolutely do not listen to anything he says. They’re all lies. Lies. LIES I SAY! LIES!

Very important. Great

Great book!. A terrific look into the life/presidency of Barack Obama. Highly recommend.

We get to gaze into the mind of one of The Greatest. I really love how President Obama shares the challenges to becoming and being a Husband, Father and President of the United States. Too often we believe something magical happens, too often we forget that Obama and others are just like us. They’re people who are just trying for something larger than themselves. So proud to have been alive during this time. This book sheds light and insight on the mind of an amazing Black man & supreme leader.

One of the best Presidential Memoirs!. Obama takes us through his first Term in the White House, beginning with his Senatorial years, with vivid details. Humble and always ready to share his accomplishments with his team, Obama reveals the sensitivity & caring man behind the stoic facade. Must read!

A detailed account of Obama’s presidency. A great read! A first hand account of his life, campaign and presidency.

Gripping. Behind the scene account of a decent man dealing with the most complex issues of our time. Gripping.

Promised Land. Great book. A wonderful insight into the working of government. Thanks to President Obama for his great service.

Well Done. Enjoyed the book throughly.

Best modern president. Behind the tough decisions and moral compass that guides one of the best modern president we ever had 😄❤️🇺🇸🌎☀️

Junk. This guy is a trader and a shameful example of American

Could use some work. It’s honestly lacking in depth and personality. Please rewrite and get back to me.

Thoughtful and Intelligent. What a great read. What a great president. The thought and measured approach to Obama’s presidency should be the gold standard. We could accomplish so much.

Now the truth is out. Truth revealed make sure you are getting uncensored info. Otherwise you are part of the problem. How is the that new America going everyone? 😂

Promised Land. It was an intense reading. So many ups and downs, so many emotions. After reading this book I am even more thrilled at the progress that President Obama was able to make.

As good as you knew it would be. A truly phenomenal read. Despite it being 700+ pages, I wish there’d been more. One for the ages.

Fantastic . . .. But a long, loooonnnng read.

Very True Insight. Loved the book. Read it then bought the audiobook to hear it in his voice. I did enjoy the audiobook more than actually reading it. Hearing him tell the stories and him emphasizing certain elements took me to a different plane. I’ve seen the negative reviews and thought to myself that some of the one star reviews didn’t read the book or give it a chance. An historical President, hearing the explanation behind some of his actions while he navigates Washington D.C. is quite breathtaking. Looking forward to volume 2.

As a former service member. Reading this book is helping me to bring closure to some of the really dark days of my time in service. I appreciate President Obama’s candid nature and ability to make me look up certain words. This is a great book of what it was like during the run up and early presidential days of the man we all know as President Barack Obama.

Good not great.. Gave me insight to several events that happened during his terms. Did not give me a sense of connection to the emotions he felt while making his significant decisions. Good read...not great for that reason.

Amazing.. I was young during this administration. Now that I have a better understanding of the world. This was an amazing read.

Great Read!. Loved the book. Although I’m not interested in politics, it was great reading about how decisions are made. And because I’m in the military, I have a great appreciation for how much the book contains different historical events that involve our military. Well Done President Obama!

Great Person. His unshakable faith impressed me!

Good Book. A very interesting and informative book

Bravo Mr. President!. I do not even know where to start with in my review. Barack’s writing guided me through this book like a John Grisham novel. He have me a detailed picture of his thoughts and actions and I felt my self excited to get to the next chapter. I loved how he provided true gratitude to his support family and support staff. This one will go down as one of the most well written Presidential accounts in history...and it is only part one!

This should be under fiction. Don’t know what world this guy is describing. He tries to make stuff up to become relevant.

Incredible!. What an incredible book! You certainly get your moneys worth with nearly 900 pages of reading material and 100 pages of amazing photographs. This book only details the first two years of President Obama’s two terms. I so look forward to the next three books and beyond. We sometimes forget overtime how many obstacles that this amazing president had to overcome. There is also incredible insight into why he ran for president when he did, Michelle Obama’s concerns and eventual support and how he maintained being the best president in United States history while still being an amazing husband, father and son. I could not recommend this book more.

Beautiful insight. This book is so exceptionally written by Obama. His description about the events and measures he experienced as president really gives a bold idea of a true leader. He is graceful, polished and set the bar for standards in the US Presidency. I’d recommend this book to all who are interested in knowing something about this former president. P.S. ignore the countless trumpers who will fully wrote terrible reviews without reading this book. Their ignorance is clearly visible so as their inability to read.

Awesome. Very insightful look into his life….more than I expected!!!

Excellent Memoir! Looking forward to the second volume!. An excellent memoir in all respects. The phenomenally written story of a president under unique challenges and faced with unimaginable pressure. This memoir paints a vivid picture of Barack Obama as a man, husband, father, and friend, and President Obama as a leader, strategist, and diplomat. I am looking forward to volume 2!

Do not read. Do not get this book I hate it so bad

Amazing. Barack Obama is an amazing person

Thanks Obama. I didn’t support all your policies but you didn’t try to overthrow the government so you have that going for you.

I searched. I was trying to find an accomplishment. I couldn’t. He is dangerous and racist and completely delusional.

Awesome. I laughed, I cried, I read some passages two or three times. Even though I lived through these days, it was very eye opening to read President Obama’s viewpoint and insights. When will part 2 be coming out?

Disappointed. I am a wholehearted Obama supporter, but initially I couldn’t get beyond the first 100 pages. We read about all this before and repeated again it smacked of self importance. I left it with a 2 rating. After taking a break I got back to it and did manage to finish it - and my rating went up to 3, but that’s all I’ll give it. It’s just too clinical- some decent context for those who don’t know some of the history behind different events or issues, but no real emotion or lessons for the future; almost a bit defensive and defeatist. Where’s the “Yes we can” man?! And c’mon, where the rage about been stopped by his detractors at every step? And you could have done more! Not going to buy Part 2.

Great book. Disgusting reviews by those who never read it.. So many racists in these reviews who never even read the book, but feel the need trash it.

Skeleton Rap (Minecraft song). Well, hello again friend, I’m a skeleton returning from the dead, determined to be relevant again and a following trends to the Nether to the End, and, I’ve, got a bone to pick with you little human a bone to pick with you little human being, I’ve seen ,where you’ve been and I don’t like it!!! I’ve got a bow to shoot at you little human, a bow to shoot at you little human being I’ve seen where you’ve been and I don’t like it!!! At all!!!

The Promised Land. I thought the book was amazing even though there was a lot of political issues that Barack had to go through. It’s amazing at how Barack only had 8 years to try and make things better for the American people and he had so much push back and criticism. I’m so glad that Michelle stuck with Barack. I wish both of them the best in all that they do. I miss them both.

Good. Read

Praise for President Barack Obama. Thank you President Obama for this most interesting and historical writing. You are a great human being and the US and the world are fortunate to have seen an example of such a great human being and leader. Wish you and your family the very best in your years ahead. Great Read and Great President with Flaws. The lowness of the trash troll comments is insane to me. You took time out of your pathetic lives to trash a book you didn’t read just because President Obama was on the cover. You’re the lowest of the low, you’re cowards and you’re the enemy of this state supporting the real trash president who’s a criminal, pardons criminals and is the most un-presidential person in the history of America! Get a life! And if you’re so bold to leave disgusting comments leave your real names. Now back to the book.. the book gave us more insight into what this president dealt with in office and the impact on his life and family! Nothing most of us didn’t know based on the racists on here proving what America really stands for.

Wonderful. An excellent recount of Americas greatest president

A Promised Land. Awesome self portrait of an extraordinary man. I found the book awfully long, but readable as he is a very skilled writer. I loved his self appraisals and respectful descriptions of the people he worked with.

Outstanding. Awesome wonderful book from beginning to end. A must read book.

The Promised Land. Provides both a captivating view of what it is like to be president and a behind-the-scenes look at the myriad issues of his first two years in office. Well written and very engaging.

Best President and best read!. This is one of the best reads to see inside what a “REAL” President of the United States does. What it means to bring people together and to fight for the American dream. He truly is genuine to the core. I’ve read every book of his so far and everyone just gets better. To those who wrote that he is terrible, I find it un-American to rate this book one star just because you want to say negative things and divide America. Is that what you want for the future? Grow up

Great book. This is a true treaty of politics, rule of law, international relations and hope written by a true Statesman

Rear miroir. So much emotions felt, relived while reading this memoir. So much pride and certainty in earlier judgment of the man. Can't wait for volume 2

Horrible and such a waste of time. Slightly insightful but filled with lies

Great book that gives an insight into being POTUS. I’ve read all the other books of President Obama and really like this book out of the 3. The other ones were written prior his entry into his role as president. I think this one really gives a real perspective of his life as POTUS, the intellect and empathy required for the office, a great insight into the difficult decisions he has to take for the USA and if effects on his family. People often forget all he has accomplished in his first term: saving the economy from a brink of recession in 2008, the healthcare act, the climate change policy initiatives, the 2 wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) he inherited and had to close, the undocumented immigrants policies he had to put in place as well as the LGBQT policies and finally the fact that he captured and killed Osama Bin Ladin (Al-Quada’s terrorist group leader responsible for the 9/11 attacks). Not much people give him credit for all these accomplishments under his administration. They often prefer the lies and fact less rhetoric of Trump. Anyhow, I’m glad for the 1st African American president the USA had, to have had Barrack Obama as it representative. He put the bar high on the excellence required to hold this office and execute on all promises. I know because of him, I see the possibilities for what is possible for me and my offspring limitless. Thanks for a great record of your presidency @barackobama @potus #promiseland #dreamscometrue #dreamsfrommyfather #audacityofhope

I promise. 54 33 I wonder how this book made me feel for the time I was reading it. I thought it was funny but at the end of the day I’m not a former president. I enjoyed the family parts and I think 2 terms as president for Barrack Obama are keep going as the time has shifted since I was in high school and Barrack Obama was president. I didn’t like how long it took me to finish this pirate.

Amazing. Great Book

Good book. Two types of ratings, people who enjoy the book, and Trump supporters complaining.

his legacy was Trump. He promised hope. He had millions chanting “yes we can”. Then... he lied

Enlightening. Outstanding read!

Garbage can of lies.. The man is an ego maniac. Dangerous drivel. Poorly written.
