Dominus by Steven Saylor Book Summary
Kr. u. 165: a Római Birodalom fejlődése eléri csúcspontját. Beköszönt az egyetemes béke – a Pax Romana – korszaka Britanniától Egyiptomig, Galliától Görögországig. Marcus Aurelius tartja fenn ezt az aranykort, aki legalább annyira filozófus, mint császár. A Pinarius család műhelye aranyozott szobrokkal és hatalmas, márványból faragott emlékművekkel járul hozzá a város ékesítéséhez. Ez a művészet és a józan ész kora. Csakhogy a történelem nem áll meg.
Az elkövetkező évek háborúkat, járványokat, tűzvészeket és éhínséget hoznak. A történelem legjobb császárait a legrosszabbak követik. Végtelen hullámokban támadnak a barbárok, akik egészen Róma városáig merészkednek. Katonák kaparintják meg a hatalmat, és a legmagasabb ajánlatot tevőnek adják a trónt. A birodalomban kitör a káosz.
Mindeközben a Pinarius család fennmarad, és ez javarészt a fascinumnak köszönhető, a Rómánál is régebbi talizmánnak, számtalan nemzedékük misztikus örökségének.
Végül még nagyobb katasztrófa sejlik fel a láthatáron. Bizonyos szekták a társadalom pereméről veszélyes, lázító gondolatokat terjesztenek. Meggyőződésük, hogy mindenki csak egy istent imádhat, az ő istenüket. Keresztényeknek nevezik magukat. Egyes császárok megtűrik őket, mások kegyetlenül leszámolnak velük. Aztán az egyik császár felfoghatatlan lépést tesz. Felveszi a kereszténységet. Constantinusnak hívják, és az általa elindított forradalom örökre megváltoztatja a világot.
Saylor százhatvan évet és hét generációt felölelő, az ókori Róma legélénkebb alakjait felvonultató eposza életre kelti az emberiség történelmének egyik legmozgalmasabb és legmeghatározóbb fejezetét, amelynek eseményei máig hatást gyakorolnak ránk.
