This one was ok.. In my opinion there wasn’t a lot of romance to make any build up of love believable. The heroin was kind of annoying in my opinion.

Another great Hoyt romance. I like the scenario of the aristocratic lady and the pursued commoner love interest. Similar to Thief of Shadows. The plot and sex scenes were very good as well.

Definitely one of her lesser works. For background, I've read nearly everything by Elizabeth Hoyt. I think the third book of this series and the Duke of Sin are the only ones I haven't read. And I skimmed the Duke of Sin, lol still can't get over all the other stuff the duke of montgomery did. This was, by far, my least favorite of her works. It was a struggle to get through. Usually, the writing flows really easily, you understand what is happening and you get invested into the characters pretty quick. I think I was at chapter 15 by the time I finally got into it but even then there were a lot of flaws. The characters were not well introduced. I looked up several times if this was truly the second book because the characters felt like they came out of no where and had ever changing personalities. Only after the first sex scene did the book feel like more of a Hoyt novel and it still felt like her first, like she was green. So all that build-up was lost, if you are into that kind of stuff. That said, the dialogue was terrible, like the kind a twelve year old would write in their first book. During one scene, the hero/heroine were talking about a very serious issue and then the heroine was like (paraphrasing) "so, tell me about your family. What was it like growing up?" And as the reader you are sitting there like, weren't we just discussing like the poisoning of sheep and you decide to change the subject to be like "welp, tell me about your hopes and dreams." Happened several times and just felt like an awkward script. The plot, while having some excellent elements, was still a bit weak in certain areas. I didn't think I'd like the plot but it's Hoyt and I was bored. There were interesting elements introduced in the last half of the book but you have to get there in the first place. I feel like this must have been a book that was a lot longer that must have been shredded, absolutely shredded on the editing floor to make it shorter. The whole beginning is truncated while the end feels more normal pacing but still doesn't feel like a Hoyt novel. The first book before this was decent but this was definitely one of her lesser works. Least favorite I've read by her.

KCB. Steamy, steamy, steamy! Really hard to put down. Great plot twists. No complaints. Wonderful read!
