Ash Book Reviews
Ash by Malinda Lo Book Summary
The haunting, romantic lesbian retelling of Cinderella and modern queer classic by award-winning author Malinda Lo--now with an introduction by Holly Black, a letter from the author, a Q&A, and more!
In the wake of her father's death, Ash is left at the mercy of her cruel stepmother. Consumed with grief, her only joy comes by the light of the dying hearth fire, rereading the fairy tales her mother once told her. In her dreams, someday the fairies will steal her away. When she meets the dark and dangerous fairy Sidhean, she believes that her wish may be granted.
The day that Ash meets Kaisa, the King's Huntress, her heart begins to change. Instead of chasing fairies, Ash learns to hunt with Kaisa. Their friendship, as delicate as a new bloom, reawakens Ash's capacity for love--and her desire to live. But Sidhean has already claimed Ash for his own, and she must make a choice between fairy tale dreams and true love.
Entrancing and empowering, Ash beautifully unfolds the connections between life and love, and solitude and death, where transformation can come from even the deepest grief.

Amazed, great read. Only criticism is that it ended abruptly, I loved that it was a Cinderella story that strayed from the typical path. Her love for The huntress was beautiful in its own way because you didn't realize it was happening almost until Ash did. I highly recommend
Loved the story, but... You never get to see the two love interests together. The book ends as soon as they get to be together, which leaves me wanting more. Do that run off together? Does the step mother come after them? I guess a good book is supposed to leave you wanting more but I want too much more. Great book though
Amazing!. I've heard so many wonderful things about this book. I absolutely loved it and I couldn't stop reading it. I'm so happy she has other books like this too. Starting "Huntress" now. :)
Strong Dislike. I liked it up to when she kissed the huntress and then it ruined the whole book for me. I wouldn't get it if i were you I regret it.
Ash, excellent but could be more. I loved almost everything about this story. I love the twist on the classic fairy tale, how we see fairy society in a few glimpses. I love the fact that it was a lesbian romance, I thought it was well done. But I wanted more, the story ended too soon and wanted to see more of after happily ever after. But i suppose that's a good thing, to leave us wanting more. So well done, and five us more.
Ash is a great story. i love the story line and the way the author warps all the fairy tales into something new and exciting. the book keeps you entertained all the way to the end. You'll find yourself hoping that the characters can all have a happy ending escpecially ash.
Pretty great. The way the author writes is very lovely. It's poetic. I just wish the book was longer. I felt that the theme of fairy tales throughout the book told by a few characters was alluding to the fact that maybe we were reading a unique fairy tale in the making. I was hoping the Huntress Kaisa and Ash would have a story of their own told through generations like the other stories in the book. I was really hoping Kaisa would have to rise to the occasion to save Ash in the land of the fairies or Ash tries to save her in a twist of events. Still I admire the fact that Ash felt that she needed to end her contract with the fairy prince on her own and that was a great idea but it was such a short conflict. I guess I feel like some of the characters weren't used to their full potential, I mean Kaisa was a great hunter, and Ash was strong willed and reckless it would have been great to see those traits put to the test by the Sidhean. It was still a good read, and I enjoyed it. The author did a great job making the reader feel like magic was extremely special in this world and I was always excited when something "magical" did happen.
LGBT Fairytale. Very cool that a lesbian gets a happy ending 💜 I wish I could have read this when I first started coming to terms that I’m gay. I read a few books that helped me along, but none of them had a happy ending. Way to go, Lo! 🌈😄
It’s a good story, worth at least a read. Being frank, I was googling gay and lesbian fantasy novels. I stumbled across Ash. It was the Malinda Lo book I’d read, thus I had nothing to compare it to. Here’s three stages of my impression of this book. As a lesbian who appreciates fantasy and sci-fi-fi based lore in world where there is little with LGBT undertones I liked it a lot. That aspect made it a page turner for me. As a impartial reader, I can’t help but feel slighted by the book, because it had the poetential to truly touch others beyond that of lesbians and bi-curious supportors who sought the book out. As a critic, which to be honest is the most important side of a reader, at least in the reviewing aspect here’s my opinion. The book is well written in ways, but it lacks the finer details of a truly engrossing story. Despite the changing conditions for Ash and her Huntress, the characters come off as mildly static. At points, I found Ash a bit bland and found myself wishing that the story gave a bit of background into the huntress. It takes a good deal of energy and mental eptitude to write a book, for this Lo definitely created something worth a read. However, I can’t postulate reading this more than once. All the same it had moments of beauty and it was a refreshing change to a lot of the other lore out there.
