The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski Book Summary

An Oprah's Book Club Pick

#1 New York Times Bestseller

“A mystery, a thriller, a ghost story, and a literary tour de force . . . an authentic epic, long and lush, full of back story and observed detail . . . the author exercises a certain magic that catches and holds our attention, a magic that is undeniably his own.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life on his family’s farm in remote northern Wisconsin, where they raise and train an extraordinary breed of dog. But when tragedy mysteriously strikes, Edgar is forced to flee into the vast neighboring wilderness, accompanied by three yearling dogs. He comes of age in the wild, struggling for survival, until the day Edgar is forced to choose between leaving forever and returning home to learn the truth behind what has happened.

Filled with breathtaking scenes—the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain—The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

Edgar Sawtelle. A very uneven book. Parts of the book are beautifully written, so this write has promise. But this feels like a couple of different books (at best) with an ending that's so abrupt it feels like it was written by someone else.

Loved it!!. This is one if my favorite books!!

WHAT HAPPENED???. I feel the story could have been shorter but it held my interest =) BUT don't waste your time reading this behemoth! It starts to really grab you at the end & it doesn't explain what the character was hiding, what happens with Edgar, his mom Trudy & the dogs?? HATE THE ENDING!!!!!!!

Oh what a glorious book.. I put off reading this book for several months for what reason I cannot now recall. It is one of the best books I have had the privilege of reading in quite some time. I have a friend who happens to be a 105 lb chocolate lab that I look at just a bit differently after reading Edgar Sawtelle. Enjoy.......

Best book I ever read with the worst ending imaginable. I can't believe I wasted an entire week on a book with such a weak and inconclusive ending. I should have realized its limitations when it started blending a lovely homespun tale with supernatural offshoots. Not withstanding its beautiful prose and heart rending character development, I can't imagining selecting another work from this author. Oprah you let me down. Oh well ,this is not the first time.

So disappointing. Beautifully written at times. However storytelling skills are tragically missing. I’m left confused, disheartened, and completely disappointed. Seriously, was this book actually written by a dog?

Wow.. Amazing writing. The last half of the book riveted me. This is the first book in a long time I couldn't put down - literally.

Edgar Sawtelle. Loved the use of words and was not predictable at all!

Loved it!. Well written, the author has a great insight into how smart and amazing animals are. Could not put it down.

Loved this book. Engaging throughout. Sad. Well written.

I loved this book!. Great story, beautifully written. Get this book. It's a little known gem!

Guys... Stop busting your hump.. YES! This IS an adaptation of William Shakespeare's book Hamlet. Stop obsessing over that fact and enjoy how the author did a great job at a new spin of it. If you really want to point some fingers look at The Lion King. Enjoy the read!! -Rational person

Edgar Sawtelle. Interesting story, quite unique. Good character development and a good plot.

:). Loved this book so much... made me cry at the end:(

A must read!. Beautifully written! I'm particular & distracted easily, so it's rare that I find a story that captures me like this one has. It's been such a pleasant escape. Thank you!

Too bad, so sad!. This book might’ve been one of the best I’ve read in a long while if it wasn’t so sad and eventually so depressing with possibly one of the worst conclusions I have ever read! It will stay with me for sometime, (and perhaps that is what this author is hoping for, ) but not for the right reasons. Well written but not satisfying in the end. To bad! It could’ve been great!

S L O W. Bought this book on sale years ago, started it, got bored, put it on my bookshelf so I could read it later, and am finally trying again now. I'm up to page 160 or so but still having a hard time getting into the book. It's so slow and pretty boring. I want to like it but I end up picking up other books to read "around" this book. When I come back to reading this book I really have to force myself. I hope it gets better! I really do struggle to like it.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. In the interest of time, I will simply say that this is book is awful. It's long, slow and unsatisfying. I don't understand what all the hype is about. It is not worth a full star, but had no choice.

Great story. Incredible writing, great story.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I was disappointed that the plot did not really peak and resolve.

Outstanding.. This book is beautifully and illustriously written. I could read it again and again. Wonderful characters and plot.

One of the Worst Books I've Ever Read. I was required to read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle for my AP Language summer work. My teacher's praise of the book was high and I expected it to be a quick, easy and enjoyable read. It was anything but. The plot was slow, the story dragged and the general pace of the book put me to sleep. I stopped reading it at pg 125 and have reduced myself to spark notes and audiobooks to complete my assignments. If asked about the book I would tell whoever asked that the book isn't worth anyone's time. So I'll say to you: don't waste your money on this, pass it and, in the chance you do read it: don't say I didn't tell you so.

Edgar sawtelle. Inspires knowing your dog.

Annoyed I spent the time.... First part was pretty good, middle got really boring with too much description about everything, hated the ending.

Outstanding!. Edgar Sawtelle will live in your heart forever. Wonderful story. Beautifully written. Everyone should read this book.

Wonderful. Great book!

Ok. This book started out pretty well, but seriously bogged down in the middle. I had to make myself finish it. Also, I love dogs and have trained many, but the dogs in this book were pretty unrealistic.

Disappointing end. The initial part of the book was quite enjoyable, but about 2/3 of the way through the author seemed to become quite morose. This book joins the growing number of recent books with lame endings.

Wonderful. This is a beautiful story and very well written. It s Hamlet.

Can't put down!. Not a dog lover, but really enjoyed this novel. Easy style; a great storyteller. Can tell it was the author's labor of love. Wanted to read more.

Beautiful and gripping.. I find it hard to leave this book, even after completing it. The writer creates a setting that draws the reader in, and makes her want to stay. And then... Wonderful writing. I will miss Edgar Sawtelle.

The story of Edgar sawtelle. Dark~ broke my heart when the dog was in the first person - and I found that fascinating... I continued to return to read, although I knew the ending would be spooky.

Edgar Sawtelle. DID not like. Love dogs and learned interesting onfo on breeding and the mind set of these animals. That was the only thing I enjoyed. Book is too too wordy wordy OMG. No end at all no resolve to the ending. Too long and very boring. Most folks I known did not enjoy the book and never even finished it!

Dog lovers story a good cover for a powerful tale of human hearts. I love my dogs. It's no secret I have more regard for their honesty and capacity for love than most humans I know, and that was the initial draw to this story. It was my very first Kindle purchase so that made for an entirely new level of enjoyment I'd not experienced before. The dogs are indeed a large part of the story but the breeding business and kennels are just the vehicle this story rides upon. I'm no author with fancy words or knowledge of story construction so I'm sure I've already made a few of you cringe with my attempt to describe something that probably has a word for it already. I was proud of myself for coming up with "vehicle" so be patient with this simple uneducated soul as I try to tell you why this book deserves your time. Ok? ok. So here goes... The story is about the struggle between family you are born into and the underlying conflicts that shape a life, as well as the families you choose and build on your own. It's about death and betrayal, love and forgiveness. Survival and growth. At first I found myself getting annoyed with the detailed accounts of breeding records and such that I set the book aside for awhile. I couldn't get it out of my mind and within a week found myself reading it again. To me that's the sign of a decent story. If I can't force myself to forget the book and it haunts me... When the not-knowing the fate of those characters triggers OCD tics and endless audio loops of dialog in my head, it's probably a good story. The consequences of pushing it aside are too terrible to contemplate. If you have stuck with me this far, thank you, but If you aren't familiar with the narrative, you may want to skip ahead to the conclusion. **Spoiler** The powerful emotion and description of this event came from nowhere and caught me completely off guard, just as it would have been in life. If you haven't read the book, you may not want to ruin a surprising moment Early in the book. Initially when I read the part of his fathers demise, it felt so very real, my hands were shaking. I commented to my partner of 14 years that the author must have had intimate knowledge of the pain associated with loosing someone you love. We had both buried partners and numerous friends, so the account, to me, was beautifully rendered. What I didn't know was that one month from that day I would loose my soulmate suddenly and without warning. I found myself drawn to read it again, only now it took on an entirely new dimension. I saw things that I had not noticed the first time through. He weaves the intense pain that floods your heart and the confusion that overwhelms you into the text so masterfully that while I recognized it the first time through, it became glaringly bright the second time through. Reading that chapter helped me immensely during the most painful event in my life. I didn't feel quite so alone. **End of Spoiler ** Conclusion: What has this to do with this being a book to spend your money on? Not much. It does show how the book is written in such a way that its depth may not be Immediately apparent at first. From where I stand I don't believe you will regret this purchase or time spent reading it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If not, then come see me personally for a refund, that's how sure I am you will enjoy it. You won't get a refund but you are welcome to come see me about it nonetheless. R R.

story of edgar sawtelle. I thought this was a beautiful novel. Particularly the chapters told from the point of view of e dogs. Definitely a must read

Beautiful. Beautifully written and unique story.

Outstanding. humbling, magnificent, generous.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I really enjoyed this book. I fond it well-written and suspenseful.

Howdy. This is pretty good, long and sometimes hard and confusing, but worth it.

Vibrant prose; fascinating setting. The book was a captivating story, set in a unique environment. While I was tempted to skip ahead to find out "what happens", I was loathe to do so since I didn't want to miss the beautiful descriptions and rich character development.

Story of Eric Sawtell. Stunning. Heart-wrenching. Superbly descriptive. Throughout compassionate. I am in awe of this achievement.

The story of Edgar Sawtelle. I could not put it down. I love this book. The writing is so beautiful. The best read I have had in years.

Super good story!!!. If you have a dog, or ever had a dog, this story is for YOU! Couldn't put it down, lots of exciting and touching moments. I loved this book and have recommended it to others. And what a GREAT job for a first novel! Can you do it again David? I sure hope so!!!!!

I don't get it. What in the heck do people see in this book? It is the most depressing book ever written. Not a single good thing happens all the way through, and the ending is absolutely awful. I hated it.

Curious... Sounds like Shakespeare's Hamlet from the description.

Shakespeare wants residuals. The book was a fine read until halfway through when the author began to lift scenes from Hamlet, moment by moment in the case of Gertrude's bedchamber and the death of Polonius. If Shakespeare were alive, this would have been called out as plagiarism. Too bad, it wasn't necessary.

Glorious. After purchasing this book, I then decided to read the reviews (I know, a little backwards) and became concerned - some adored the book, some despised it. With an open mind I approached and was justly rewarded. Granted, a little depressing here and there but it reflects the human condition. The book wasn't under the "fantasy/escapism" tab. Some elements are fantastical but overall, the story was wonderfully conveyed, allowing the reader to mold it how they may because in all characters, whether human or canine, there was something easily recognizable. Kudos!
