The Child Thief by Brom Book Summary

The acclaimed artist Brom brilliantly displays his multiple extraordinary talents in The Child Thief—a spellbinding re-imagining of the beloved Peter Pan story that carries readers through the perilous mist separating our world from the realm of Faerie. As Gregory Maguire did with his New York Times bestselling Wicked novels, Brom takes a classic children’s tale and turns it inside-out, painting a Neverland that, like Maguire’s Oz, is darker, richer, more complex than innocent world J.M. Barrie originally conceived. An ingeniously executed literary feat, illustrated with Brom’s sumptuous artwork, The Child Thief is contemporary fantasy at its finest—casting Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, even Captain Hook and his crew in a breathtaking new light.

The Child Thief. I actually downloaded a sample of the book and didn't intend to read much further than that. But once I started, I found myself reading more and more. The book captured my attention and I craved more. Excellent book, I highly recommend it!

The Child Thief. I had a difficult time putting this book down. I found myself wishing I were young again so I too could enter Peter's world of magic and fight to preserve the "Lady" and her tree. Brom gave his characters and lands such great descriptions and brought them to life so completely that the reader finds it easy to be transported and amongst them without even realizing until you are already had. I found myself thinking about this story even after I was in bed at night, and still even after I have read yet another book! I know I will read this book again and again. i would recommend this book to someone looking for an adventure that sweeps you away! A most excellent work!

Breathtaking. This book was amazing, however this is not a book you start when u have a busy schedule because it will make you put everything else on hold. He is an amazing artist and the storyline is addicting. I love when authors take a childhood story and put a dark twist with a little reality to it.

The Child Thief. A thoroughly engaging new rendition of the tale of Peter Pan. The story is very mature and filled with descriptive detail. The main characters are well developed and don't seem one dimensional. Probably the first book I finished reading in less than 15 days time. An awesome read.

Wow. Don't start this if you have anything important to do or anywhere to be, as it is impossible to put down once started. This novel easily could be ( and god willing will be) turned into a series. I would love to know what happens to several of the other characters.

Great until it makes you want to kill yourself. Excellent book. The ending makes you feel cheated somehow, though.

GREAT BOOK. Loved it.. I loved this take on Peter Pan. I didn't want to put the book down. All I have to say is this is not a book you read before bed. Because you will never get any sleep. There were many nights I didn't sleep because I was to deep into the book. I LOVED IT.

Your new favorite book. This book takes you from the opening page and doesn't let go even after it's over.

Absolute Perfection. Brom has (for me) gone from a wonderful and curious artist to my favorite author with The Child Thief. I was mesmerized instantly. Bravo!

Pretty awesome. I'm addicted to disturbing twists on classic fairy tales, and this one was really good. However the ending seemed to just kinda stop and I was left wanting more... closure?... I suppose.

Buy it!. Thoroughly enjoyable very dark and complex retelling of the Peter Pan tale. Really impressive. You will love this book!

The Child Thief is a heavy volume, made heavier by an abundance of violence. The Child Thief is a heavy volume, made heavier by an abundance of violence untempered by any form of morality by the majority of characters presented in the story. The POV skips around frequently, especially in the first 250 pages, disengaging the reader from any form of emotional attachment that might be formed to the primary "lost boy", Nick. It evens out to some degree when the action truly begins, then introduces new POVs at the end that are unnecessary and cumbersome. The author tried to pack too much in, link too many different ideas, through an amalgamation of Arthurian legend, the pilgrims arrival in America, and various mythologies involving fairies and gods. The only place the book really shone is where the author accentuated Peter's separation from emotions that otherwise would have redeemed his character. Peter spends most of the book in observation mode, showing the reader that he feels little for the children he is "saving". What emotion he does display is like that of a person angered that one of his toys has been broken. The ending shows that there could be hope for Peter, but it comes 494 pages too late to make the book interesting.

This is not for the faint of heart. This book is incredible! Brom does an amazing job creating his own version of Barrie's Peter Pan. However, this Pan is vastly different than Disney's version and if you are hoping for anything remotely similar, you're in for a shock. This book is brilliant and Brom is a masterful story teller.
