Little Bee by Chris Cleave Book Summary

Millions of people have read, discussed, debated, cried, and cheered with Little Bee, a Nigerian refugee girl whose violent and courageous journey puts a stunning face on the worldwide refugee crisis.

“Little Bee will blow you away.” —The Washington Post

The lives of a sixteen-year-old Nigerian orphan and a well-off British woman collide in this page-turning #1 New York Times bestseller, book club favorite, and “affecting story of human triumph” (The New York Times Book Review) from Chris Cleave, author of Gold and Everyone Brave Is Forgiven.

We don’t want to tell you too much about this book. It is a truly special story and we don’t want to spoil it. Nevertheless, you need to know something, so we will just say this: It is extremely funny, but the African beach scene is horrific. The story starts there, but the book doesn’t. And it’s what happens afterward that is most important. Once you have read it, you’ll want to tell everyone about it. When you do, please don’t tell them what happens either. The magic is in how it unfolds.

Great read. I enjoyed this book very much and would like to know what happens next. I think it's a great story of survival, forgiveness, and loving one another.

Appropriate for high school book club?. Would love to suggest this book but I am uncertain if there are too many discretionary scenes. Would love someone to comment on them with their opinion. Nevertheless, love the book!

A lot of hype. I was disappointed in the ending and the overall story. It just didn't turn out to be all I thought it would or had heard.

Promise and Disappointment. Little Bee held such promise and eventually left me disappointed. It was curious to me that a male author wrote in the voice of two women and I didn't think he really pulled it off. Also curious was that the two male characters were not only weak, but fatally flawed. The child character was perhaps the most striking note of discord, as he was totally unbelievable. It surprised me to read that Mr. Cleave is, in fact, a father himself. The story was interesting in that it allowed the reader a chance to visit the cruel life of the illegal immigrant. However, the story was disjointed, circular, slow-moving, and plodding. I also was left with the feeling that the white people just didn't get it.

The most moving book I've read in years. This book is excellent. It is deeply moving. I don't think I've ever cried over a book the way I did this one. A must-read!

Little Bee. LOVED IT!!!

Found it very interesting. Easy reading, sort of a mid thriller but good.

Beautiful!!. This is one of the best and most amazing novels I have ever read! It's a very powerful and thought provoking story. Beautifully written, strong characters...I could not put this book down and I read this entire thing in 12 hours!! I see from other reviews that people are disappointed in the ending; and I must admit that way it ended was a little surprising however, the entirety of the book (the symbolism, the social commentary, the paralleling characters and the depth of each character) has nothing to do with the ending. Having a "traditional" ending would not have changed the overall meaning. This is a must read book!!

Loooove Little Bee. This book was absolutely amazing. I am not a reader AT ALl and I could not put this book down. It was completely engaging and the story kept you wanting to know more and more. I would find myself wanting to read right when I woke up, and when I was falling asleep....I fell in love with Little Bee and think you will too.

Best novel. This is the best novel I have read in a long time. It is beautifully written, surprising, raw, and tender. I couldn't put it down.

Cute. The book was somewhat interesting, with a few slow parts.

One of the best. Easily one of the best books I have read. Those who don't like it is uneducated.

Riveting. Sad but also a story of survival and hope. Really enjoyed this book.

Great book but.... Loved the book. Enjoyed the writing and was attached to the story however, the end left me very unfulfilled for the characters. Hoping there will be a continuation... It didn't finish smoothly for me.

A SATISFYING READ. Once I started this book, I honestly couldn't put it down. I almost weep at the humanity it explores, the full realm of good & evil. The young boy, Charlie, aka Batman, makes me cry due to his own naïve circumstances and unconditional love. I LOVE Little Bee!

Little Bee. Amazing Read. It will tear your heart out.

readtome. I read this book very quickly and have been waiting patiently for my friends to read it so that I can talk about it. This book is haunting. A story that sticks with you! Lucky for me my book club chose to read it. I can't wait to talk about it!

A good read. This was definitely an interesting reading experience. First few chapters were better than the later chapters, in terms of smoothness of the story and how it captured my attention. I found this book really haunting and sad. Not very funny, almost depressing. However, it definitely made me think. About the ending, I also was not 100% satisfied with how it ended, but, when I went back to read the last chapter again, it kind of made sense to me, why the author wanted to end it that way. It really is about how the characters transform (or not) throughout the story, not how it ends. I definitely recommend this book.

It was okay. I liked this book fine, just didn't fall in love with it. Can't really explain why I didn't love it, just felt a little incomplete. Not terrible by any means, I guess I just expected more from the "hook" of the review that promised such a wondrous, surprising read and I feel that it fell just a little short.

Definitely a page turner. Could not put this book down! You feel the characters the story draws you in. I enjoyed reading this book.

Lost. The book with this storyline could have been great. It’s muddied and lost my attention quickly. Unnecessary pages of content.

Yuck!. Was mad about all the hype. Don't waste your time & money. I kept turning the page thinking it was going to get better... It didn't.

Scary and beautiful.. Like the reviews say... "I can't tell you too much about this book" however I don't recall ever being so moved by a novel. I actually trembled physically while reading certain portions. You defiantly need to read this book with an open heart and mind.

Powerful book. This book is well written and truly insightful. A must read!

Little Bee is amazing!. Well written and easy to read. The author was extremely visual in describing the scenes and I love that! Two thumbs up!

Epic!. I could not put this amazing book down! My iPad's battery was on 5%, before I had to put it down to recharge it. A must-read for anyone wanting to be awaken.

Powerful Writing. Cleave's use of language and imagery weaves a powerful spell. The characters are compelling, the issues and dilemmas thought provoking, making the tragedies and joys living things for the reader. Couldn't put it down!

Little Bee. What a beautiful sad story. It ended to quickly for me. With the determination of Sarah and Udo, the main characters, I would have loved to enjoy a little more time with them.

Almost. Loved the book, loved the characters even more. For a first time reader, I could not put this book down. Unfortunately the end did not provide the resolve I was looking for and that made me a little disappointed. All in all, great read

Unforgettable characters.. This is the kind of story that makes you feel that you want to talk to the characters. They become your friends and you want to counsel them, warn them of trouble ahead, share in their conversations, laugh with them, and dry their tears. The story is so vividly written, that the characters almost jump off the page and into your home. I loved the ending because you know the characters so well you just know in your heart what they will do next.

Mikey. One of the best books I've gotten a chance to read.. Couldn't put it down, real page turner.. Great attention to every word nd detail that helps feel like your there in the story..
