Tweak by Nic Sheff Book Summary

The story that inspired the major motion picture Beautiful Boy featuring Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet.

This New York Times bestselling memoir of a young man’s addiction to methamphetamine tells a raw, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful tale of the road from relapse to recovery.

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age eleven. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and Ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise. In a voice that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge into the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture for us of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. It's a harrowing portrait—but not one without hope.

Wow. Intense and sobering!! Felt like I was on his journey with him and like I actually knew him!!

life lesson learned. To pretend that Nic is your character through out the entire book with everything he had been through truly opens your eyes and your mind about what really goes down when you mess with the hard stuff. Emotional and life changing experience that a person would go through after messing with illegal substances and getting yourself into trouble with life and everyone you have ever loved around you. This book taught me some valuable lessons even though I would never personally do anything like to myself mentally, emotionally and physically but overall, this book truly helped me understood my mother’s addiction that she had went through before ending her life with alcohol poisoning and substance abuse at 29.

Tweak. An amazing read! Sad struggles and hardships but it will reel you in to make you feel a part of the book!

Provocative. Rarely have I consumed a piece of media that has made me consider my own mental state and choices as Tweak. This book provides such a raw unfiltered look at not only Nic’s addiction but the mental illness and trauma that perpetuates his roller coaster or recovery and relapse. This book has made me consider my own mental health like nothing else I’ve ever read. And it offers such great insight into Nic’s story, which is very much the story of every addict.

Tweak. Just bought it yesterday, have not read it yet, but in answer to 10-vinitttttt, there's a book called " A Million Little Pieces" or something LIKE that.. It was supposed to be a true account of a meth addicts' rehabs + relapses....It was AWESOME !!!! Yes, I checked. It's here at iTunes in paperback for $8.99...Author: James Frey. Give it a go! I KNOW you'll enjoy it!! **Update: I was wrong on the price, it's $9.99, AND it's only avail on iBooks.... Sooo sorry for the misinformation...!

A+. One of the most captivating stories I have read in a very long time. Nic effortlessly conveys every emotion, hardship and experience he's been through giving you the feeling that you are right along with him running the streets. An excellent book that I highly recommend for any person; a perfect picture of the dark side of the world we live in without the filter.

Great book. So, I’m a 25 year old black girl from an urban city. I’m Christian. And I can honestly say on the outside me and Nic have NOTHING in common. I live in Ohio he’s across the nation. I tried to commit suicide and ended up in a psych ward for 2 days. I don’t drink often or smoke or do drugs. I was just overwhelmed and hurting. I first read Beautiful Boy by his dad and I couldn’t put it down until I was forced to be discharged. I immediately purchased both books off iTunes when I got my phone back. I LOVE THESE BOOKS. I don’t know what reeled me in but I literally couldn’t put these books down. ESPECIALLY Nic’s version Tweak. It was so interesting to read about how human and normal drug addicts are. We all have the same issues, they just deal with them in a differently harmful way. Anywho I really appreciate this book and if Nic ever reads my review all I want to say is God is real, He loves you, He is covering you, He is allowing you to go through his to reach ppl like me that needed to hear a message about self love and self hate and coping. This is your gift and don’t think for one second it isn’t God given. Secondly, thank you for being SO open. Thank you for not skipping over details. The way you and your father wrote the book and I could piece together certain parts that he were about and parts you wrote about and get questions answered. Man I could go on and on and on.

Amazing. This book blew me away it was so good I have no words. All I can say is life changing.

Love it !. He gave me hope. Thank I nic

Terrific. I work in the addiction field. This is an honest account of an addicts life. It doesn't much matter the drug(s) of choice, the addiction takes over and the addicts world is only related to drugs. Addiction is a disease of the brain and only when the brain can be healed, can recovery happen. Relapses do occur, but full recovery is possible.

Oh nic.... I loved this. I have read books on overcoming addiction before and it always hits me hard which is strange because I don't have any addictions but reading this just leaves me with the feeling that anything is possible. Not saying overcoming is possible but that defeat is possible also. Nic painted an amazing picture with his words and I feel privileged for getting to look into his life then his story. He's amazing and such an inspiration to everyone. Drug abusers and those who are sober... Wonderful job Nic, you really are something special and I don't even know you. Thank you for the read- I look forward to the next one.

Tweak. I loved it! I read it while I was in treatment struggling with my own addiction. It was inspiring.

Excellent!. Brutally honest account of the author's real life descent into the nightmare of addiction. I could have done without a few of the gorier details, but that's not really a complaint as I do feel they were important in conveying the message; that there is absolutely no level to low for an addict to sink to get that next fix. As any morals or self-esteem they ever held evaporate, and even consequences become irrelevant, they will lie, cheat, steal, manipulate, even degrade and prostitute themselves, with zero consideration for anything, or anyone else. The harm they cause is not just to themselves. They devestate and destroy the lives of everyone around them, especially those who love them the most. The author details how he had everything going for him. In his teens, he was already a published author, had appeared in a TV commercial, and accepted at Berkley University with a perfect GPA--and even parents, who not only were financially capable, but also willing to foot the bill for his education too. As an addict, he threw all that away, to live in filth and squalor. Only after overdosing, at death's door, were his parents able to plead/beg/threaten him into signing himself in for rehab. His parents paid for him to attend some of the best treatment centers in the country, and he even completed their programs, only to relapse shortly afterwards, time and time again. The power his addiction held over him was just too strong. This is a good book for anyone who imagines they can use drugs, and stop any time they want. Every single person who has ever become addicted believed that too, until they learned otherwise the hard way. For those dealing with the addiction of a loved one, I strongly recommend first reading this story, as told from his father's perspective, in the companion book, "Beautiful Boy," first as it contains invaluable information to help explain the nature of addiction, and the deadly effects, not only on the addict, but family members as well.

Excellently Written & Described. Must read.

Loves it. Do you guys know any other books that are similar to this, other than Go Ask Alice and Ellen Hopkins series. I think this novel is excellent and properly written autobiography. It's shows the hardships addictions can put an individual through, no matter what there age. I think this novels brilliant, and I can only pray and hope God is with Nic now, guiding him. Nic also has a blog he does not update anymore but it has a series of post, that explain life after the novel. They're quite interesting.

Loved it.. I legitimately do not know how to put into words how I feel about this book. To say the least I think it is a really important piece and it made me think. I cried hard and I cringed and winced and it made me feel lots of things I didn’t know a book could make me feel. Nic Sheff, I’m rooting for you. I support you and thank you for sharing your story.

....... This book is absolutely amazing. The end

Tweak. I absolutely lovved this book. It made me cry during some of the sad parts. Anyone who has any taste in good books should deffinetly read this book!!!!

Great book. It is a really good book for people suffering from an addiction, or wanting to learn about what drug addicts go through.

Honest and gripping. Great story, well told by an obviously young voice. I'll be interested to see how Sheff's writing develops as he matures. Having read Beautiful Boy first, I found this a perfect rounding out to the story, a great way to identify with all the players.

From a Grateful Member of Alanon .... "Tweak" ... brutal, real, exhausting & necessary. Thank you for sharing Nic~

Favorite book ever. 10/10

Amazing. Couldn't stop reading!. This book is very realistic, heart wrenching, and intriguing. I fell into the world of Nic and his addiction, and couldn't put the book down the entire time. The way he writes, you can tell he struggles to remain sober but still wants to try and still has passion. He is human, and it is nice to see another side to the treacherous path of addiction, recovery, and relapse.

Tweak. This is a such an intense, powerful book. I originally read this book two years ago and recently decided to purchase it again and I am so glad I did. Throughout the whole thing you are actually pulled into Nic's life as a drug addict and shown pain. Actual, deep pain. And honesty. As it starts out, it's hard to understand what exactly is going on or why it is going on. But Nic is able to quickly change that and begins to being you into his life. Nic Sheff is a talent writer and Tweak has easily become my favorite read. I highly suggest this book to anyone who enjoys a solid, honest story told through the eyes of an addict.

Tweaked- very vivid. Raw, real, scary. MLG

Great. Great read. I read beautiful boy first and wasn’t entirely interested. But it was definitely great to make the connections between the two books. Loved it!
