Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai Book Summary

Inside Out and Back Again is a #1 New York Times bestseller, a Newbery Honor Book, and a winner of the National Book Award! Inspired by the author's childhood experience as a refugee—fleeing Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon and immigrating to Alabama—this coming-of-age debut novel told in verse has been celebrated for its touching child's-eye view of family and immigration.

Hà has only ever known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, and the warmth of her friends close by. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. Hà and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope—toward America.

This moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing received four starred reviews, including one from Kirkus which proclaimed it "enlightening, poignant, and unexpectedly funny."

An author's note explains how and why Thanhha Lai translated her personal experiences into Hà's story. This updated digital edition also includes an interview with the author, an activity you can do with your family, tips on writing poetry, and discussion questions.

Love it. This story is amazing! It's one of my favorite books. A very touching story. I recommend this book.

Amazing. This book is the best thing I’ve read. I have the copy of the book at home, so my sister gave it to me. The book is amazing and teaches us how it’s like being an immigrant, learning how to speak English. The story line is beautiful. I would definitely say this book is for ages 10+.

Great!. I really liked this book, but there were some parts that were a little sad, like the Vietnam war and being bullied really badly. But this was written really well and it was overall quite good!

Amazing. This book is a piece of art! Its crafted beautifully and I read it in 1 amazing hour. you should defenitly get it!

Inside Out and Back Again. This book takes you to 1975 in a war-torn Vietnam those the eyes of a young girl named Ha. The story chronicles her upheaval from her homeland to a foreign and scary America. I liked how the book was written in verse. It reminded me of a journal a young girl would write about her life, but her story carried the weight of emotional turmoil. A great, quick read.

been there. I to spent time in Vietnam fighting in the war I saw things I wish I could forget but they still stay with me. Reading this story made me remember the beautiful country and the people I met when I was there I saw the hardship and there struggles. Reading this story made me realize the struggles they had coming to America. I just wish we could have saved there country for them. An American who wishes he could of made a difference .

book. this book was very good. excellent !!

Humble. After losing my grandmother who was like a mother to me just a little over a month ago, this is the first book I've read. Trying to find ways to be her example, I decided to read this book after I had found, bought, and sent it home as a Birthday gift to my soon to be 13 year old sister. Kim Há's mother and neighbor Missis Washington, remind me of the warm heart my grandmother had. It filled my heart with happiness, almost as she was reading me the story. She always taught us to be good to others, to never judge the unfortunate, and to always be grateful. Something kids nowadays seem to care nothing for. I'm sure my sweet sister will love is as much as I do at 26.

How timely. With the refugee crisis everywhere and the voicing of millions of opinions, I can only say that this book certainly made me think. It made me feel and it made me cry. I wish the leaders of all the countries in the world could read this book. I wish the televised blowhards in America could read this book as well

Touching. I read this book in 5th grade and was memorized by the detail, the facade of the book makes the scenery of the place much more vivant, when I read this book I was so sucked into it, I read it twice one of my favorites I highly recommend this book , it's very heartfelt and the simplicity makes it that much better, an absolute 5 star!

I love this book. Even though this book made me cry like a gazillion times, I love it anyway. It is a short read. But such a good read. If you don’t like this book something is wrong with you

Beautiful. It is so sweet, bitter, and just plain gorgeous. Her memories of her home in Vietnam give the book a sweet side, and her pain from the changes give it some of bitterness that simply touches you. It comes from the heart and I enjoyed it. 😍

💜. You really must take your time with this book. If you rush through it you will literally be finished with this book in an hour. But if you really dissect this book and digest it, you can see a whole different side of the book full metaphors and feelings. If you are to understand the entire experience of Ha and her family leaving Vietnam and fitting in in their new home, you HAVE to take your time with this book. HAVE TOO!

No Jane Eyre. The plot was not dashing. It was not mind bogglingly creative. It was real, and even though it wasn’t the most interesting story, I respect the fact that it had to remain true to the author. I, as a writer, love creating wild ecstasies from imagination, but I try to leave own experiences bare and real. It feels wrong to jazz them up. I enjoyed it, read it in less than two hours, and though it was a good experience, even if a little too simple

Trash. Trash

So good. I love the book I read it in school so I had to read it at home!

U should get it. I luv this book!it reminded me of where my whole family lived in Vietnam and how wonderful it was!it also reminded me about the times I visited Vietnam!I luv this book to my heart!

😦😳. Amazing story I literally have no words #Speechless

Amazing. The book was so moving and yet sad, like the bullies and losing her father, but overall it was good
