The Pinnacle of Pern Saga. Many books have come before this in the series, and a good number since, yet this book stands out among my young adult memories and present day reading as the true pinnacle of this series. It is among the most memorable of them, bringing all our beloved characters together around a new and distinct character: Aivas, the first real link between 'our world' and Pern, as well as Perm's past. Many books of epic literature culminate I this tale that finally bring it all together. Aivas, a long dormant Artificial Intelligence Voice Address System, is unearthed in the Southern continent by digging Pernese, who are soon greeted with a visual history of the settling of their planet and the creation of dragons. They are also given the one hope they have always yearned for: a chance, only after years of training and study in the knowledge lost over the centuries, to remove the threat of thread forever. But are dragons truly up to the task required, and are the citizens of Pern truly ready to accept all that Aivas has to offer? An epic tale with an epic ending that will move the heart of any Pern fan, this is truly a story worth buying after having read the previous Pern saga. I do not recommend reading unless you have, lest the impact be severely lessened. My only complaint? I wish Aivas had more 'page time'!

I love The Dragon Riders of Pern. I have loved “The Dragon riders of Pern” since I first read “The White Dragon” back in the ‘70s. I would love to see what today’s movie makers could do with making a mini series of the books. To “see” Ramoth, Mnemeth & Ruth fly across the big screen would be a great triumph. Every time I read the books, I “see” and am part of Pern. Master Robinton & Zair’s passing still brings me to tears. Thank you so very much, Anne McCaffery.

Own This in Hardcopy - GREAT Book. This brings people from the Harper Hall Trilogy into contact with the Southern Continent, and a buried, 100% preserved original colony structures, and among them is AVIS — he helps bring them into the new world of “our time” if you will, in “ways,” and this tale is definitely one that’s relative to today and now. New technology that many people need, but that many others abhor, which in a small society like that on Pern…well you can imagine. Great book, although many didn’t care for it upon initial release. NOW, we have basically all done some of the things they will accomplish within the course of the book. Definitely give it a read — it’s a great book.

The story is wonderful, but.... Having known and admired Anne as both an author and friend, I have nothing but praise for this tale of Pern, even if it always makes me cry (as it did her!). However, this translation into electronic media has some serious problems, especially in the last quarter of the book, where entire paragraphs of text are missing. I could wish that the publisher would get with the program and correct these mistakes, but I fear it won't ever happen. A pity, since it diminishes what is otherwise an exceptional tale from an exceptional author who is no longer with us.
