First Force Recon company. Good
VIET NAM VETRAN. GOOD BOOK
Not bad. Let me preface this by saying anyone who’s been in combat is a hero to me. But the author went from being a stateside 2nd lieutenant right out of college to a Force Recon team member, but he never did the advanced training that IS Force Recon. Somehow he became a team leader with very little experience, which is odd in this line of work. I wouldn’t be surprised if author was hero in his own mind more than those of his men, he seemed to feel like he was ‘a highly trained killer’ after only a few missions. If you want to read about VERY highly trained spec opps teams on recon missions, look into MAC-SOG Special Forces teams. These teams generally had far more specialized & in depth training than the FR Marines, but worked in similar size teams with similar missions. These men were selected as the best of the Green Berets, and had far higher casualty rates than any other units in Vietnam, often exceeding 100%. Some of the survivors of these teams went on to form Delta Force-who are THE best trained warriors on the planet. John Plaster’s books on Mac-Sog are absolutely riveting!
