The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin Book Summary

Now including an excerpt from VICTORIA: A Novel, by Daisy Goodwin, the Creator/Writer of the Masterpiece Presentation on PBS.

"Anyone suffering Downton Abbey withdrawal symptoms (who isn't?) will find an instant tonic in Daisy Goodwin's The American Heiress. The story of Cora Cash, an American heiress in the 1890s who bags an English duke, this is a deliciously evocative first novel that lingers in the mind." --Allison Pearson, New York Times bestselling author of I Don't Know How She Does It and I Think I Love You

Be careful what you wish for. Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the twentieth century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts', suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. Nothing is quite as it seems, however: Ivo is withdrawn and secretive, and the English social scene is full of traps and betrayals. Money, Cora soon learns, cannot buy everything, as she must decide what is truly worth the price in her life and her marriage.

Witty, moving, and brilliantly entertaining, Cora's story marks the debut of a glorious storyteller who brings a fresh new spirit to the world of Edith Wharton and Henry James.

"For daughters of the new American billionaires of the 19th century, it was the ultimate deal: marriage to a cash-strapped British Aristocrat in return for a title and social status. But money didn't always buy them happiness." --Daisy Goodwin in The Daily Mail

Disappointing ending. I thought this was a fun read UNTIL the ending. It was very disappointing - at first I thought I missed a chapter or maybe there was a to be continued...page,but no- it was just a really lame, incomplete ending.

Standard Downton Abbey chick lit. I really expected better than the life of Consuelo Vanderbilt with a "happy ending." This book is basic Romance 100.

The American Heiress. From the first few pages I knew this book was going to be a good book. I enjoyed the story very much.

Loved it!. Loved this book. A little predictable but still a good read. Couldn't put it down toward the end! Would make a fabulous movie.

The American Heiress. Great read!

The American Heiress. What a wonderful book! It took the reader to another place and time with brilliant writhing and imagery. Lovely story with intriguing characters. A great summer book!

The American Heiress. This was an enjoyable, quick read, especially for fans of Downton Abbey. I believe this book had some influence on the creation of the series but I'm not sure if that's true. Either way, if you like Downton Abbey, you'll like this book.

The American Heiress. Boring, Boring, Boring !! Full of characters you don't really care about...a plot that moves along at a snail's pace and completely predictable. It picks up a bit at the end, but by then you don't really care and are just glad to have it over. Some of the notes about the period at the end are more interesting than the story.

Pretty good.. Fascinating period detail and descriptives under the love-as-subject narrative. Anyone who has had the fortune/misfortune of growing up in any city's version of "high society" will see some aspects of these characters' Victorian era stories which are all too recognizable.

Mediocre at best. I had high hopes when reading the plot line. Unfortunately, it was a little disappointing for me.

Wonderful book. So well written and interesting! Loved it!

An American Heiress. I really enjoyed this book. Somewhat predictable but a great read none-the-less!

Good read. Don't read for historical accuracy, very little found in this book, but a good fictional read.

The American Heiress. I loved this story. the writer brought the characters to life and I got to know them. She also made the setting very real and you could see the beauty of the countryside and the coastline. This book was suggested by a friend.

Excellent. Easy enjoyable read with a happy ending

American Heiress. It's listed as "historical" novel, but it is more accurately categorized as a romance novel - scant historical research for readers familiar with the political and social history of the era, and the usual, predictable romance novel plot. Very disappointing read.

The American Heiress. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I compared it to a Regency novel, but with a much more substantial story.

Not What I Expected. I had high hopes for this novel, both as a fan of Downton Abbey and of historical fiction. It sounded like a lovely working of an interesting historical phenomenon. It even started out fairly well! Cora's character was pretty much what I expected for a late 19th century heiress, and the environment was well described and believable. Even the initial encounters between Ivo and Cora were interesting. However, after the first third of the book, it went wildly downhill. There were gaping plot holes, the story was completely absurd (Ivo's proposal, for example), and the characters became rather two dimensional. It wasn't that the book was bad, but rather that it read far more like a "trashy romance novel" than a historical fiction. In fact, I've read several books that followed very nearly the same plot line. I do understand that Ms. Goodwin did a decent amount of research, and in fact, nothing about the history was wrong... the characters and the story just left quite a bit to be desired.

American Heiress. A frothy read, with few surprises, but lots of parties.

Disappointment. I do not suggest this book. The plot was so thin and the whole book could have been written into a few chapters.

The American Heiress. This book is much more of a "romance" book than I thought it would be. It is well written, but perdictable.

Excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but it took a bit to get used to Godwin's writing style. I hope she does a follow up novel to explore the characters lives further.

The American Heiress. A good read.

The American Heiress. I liked this book. The first time I have read anything by this author. I Definitely will read others. Cwrm

Easy good read. Very well written & enjoyable story. I know it’s a novel but it really had me wishing it had some historical ties. I was fully drawn in & wish some of auxiliary plots would have tied into historical events/people.

LizRN. Not the worst book I read, but felt the characters were transparent, contrived and stereotypical. This could have been a great book, many of the ideas just did not follow through. It was a good book to just fill time.
