The Night Eternal by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan Book Summary

“The most credible and frightening of all the vampire books of the past decade.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Bram Stoker meets Stephen King meets Michael Crichton. It just doesn’t get much better than this.”
—Nelson DeMille

The stunning New York Times bestselling vampire saga that author Dan Simmons (Drood, The Terror) calls, “an unholy spawn of I Am Legend out of ‘Salem’s Lot,” concludes with The Night Eternal. The magnificent, if monstrously warped brainchild of cinematic horror master Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) and Chuck Hogan—whose novel Prince of Thieves, was praised as, “one of the 10 best books of the year” by Stephen King—The Night Eternal begins where The Strain and The Fall left off: with the last remnants of humankind enslaved by the vampire masters in a world forever shrouded by nuclear winter.  Still, a small band of the living fights on in the shadows, in the final book of the ingenious dark fantasy trilogy that Newsweek says is, “good enough to make us break that vow to swear off vampire stories.”

Awesome. An excellent close to a well written trilogy!!

Refreshingly entertaining. Simply amazing. Entertaining, raw and satisfyingly refreshing. Thanks Chuck and G!

Great Trilogy. I creative approach to a vampire book.

Super cool!. Yeahhh, iv been waiting for this book a long time

Good. I was a little disappointed in the ending but it was overall pretty interesting.

Interesting & entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three books in the series. I hope they make movies.

Reads like a made for tv horror film from 15 years ago. Not a bad story but the way this series is written is exceedingly clumsy and at times just bizarre. The author is madly in love with the word “preternatural” and equally enamored with comparing things to “pudding skin.’ Interesting take on the well-worn vampire theme but glaringly weak dialogue and cliched character forms abound. That being said, I’ve bothered to read all 3 books so I cant deny there is something entertaining and engaging about this series.

Sensational series. A great finale! All 3 books are page turners. The way the characters morph into their fates throughout the story is shockingly written. I hope new tales with the same inspirations arrive from the authors. Good stories are so few, of late.

Top notch thriller-couldn't put it down!. I began to read these series of books after becoming enthralled with the TV series "The Strain." I had gotten out of the habit of reading novels a couple of years ago. This series of three books renewed my interest in reading novels. I couldn't put them down. As is usually the case with all books, the author is able to tell the story in such detail that just isn't possible to do with a television show. Would recommend this to any fan of action/drama/thriller novels. After reading the first book in the series "The Strain," I realized how different the books were going to be than the television series. I can't wait for the opportunity to watch the TV show to come back on!!!

The Culmination to a trilogy. The Night Eternal, though lengthy towards the conclusion, was a sensual fulfillment for Eph and Co. A very good read throughout

Outstanding. By far the best trilogy I have ever read. A spellbinding page-turner. Must read.

Moves well. I saw this book mentioned in an article on NPR and thought I'd give it a go. Four days later, I turned the last page. I did not read the two books preceding this one so my review could be skewed. Regardless, this book read well, it was engaging and entertaining but it lacked something I am unable to describe; best way to put it is the story seemed a little thin.

Not bad, not good. Meh. A very so-so ending to a promising series.

Strain Trilogy. I waited for what seemed like forever for the last book in the Strain trilogy. It was a fantastic and unexpected ride. My only hopes now are that the Strain trilogy will make it to the big screen in the next few years and that we will see more from Del Torro & Hogan!

Fine read. A very nice series of books by these fine authors, did like the 1st book the best , but overall you will not be disappointed . Ending was kind of rushed and expected but did not tarnish the overall story.

Excellent series. I picked up the strain not knowing anything about the authors. I thought to myself I'm I really gonna read a vampire book,I hope this isn't twilight. What it turned out to be was one of the most well written entertaining fiction reads ever. It was contempary, a story seemingly built in science. I story that builds pressure constantly. Highly recommended if you are looking for something in the fiction realm to take your mind off of stuff. And for all of us who have read it and will read it I think the love started with the airplane that got stuck on the Tarmac all the way to this ending...

The night eternal. Great read, couldn't put the book down. Loved the series, too bad it had to end.

Yes!!!!. Everything I hoped it would be! The whole series has been awesome! I can't wait to see the movies!

Excellent. Many a story have I read, this one is in the top 3! All three of the books I sat and read in about 4days. I was so drawn into the story. From a powerful and quiet exterminator to the sadistic love of a turned mother. I have and will continue to tell everyone I know to read this series. With both of these authors being great directors we could be in for a real treat if they made a movie as well.

The Night Eternal. WOW! So gripping I read it in one sitting! A fantastic end to the trilogy. I am saddened that this wasn't a series of books, rather than just a trilogy. I hope that Mr. Del Torro will make his three books into three equally entertaining movies. A must read for Horror/ Thriller fans.

Bible Lies. I love a good horror story but I couldn't finish this book. This is the 3rd and worst of the 3. Why did they have to heavy handedly disrespect God,The Bible and religion as a whole? It's one thing to not believe but to disrespect is not necessary or cool!

Great series!!. Awesome trilogy. Definitely recommend and I hope they make a movie.

Great series. Loved the books. All three of them. Well written and interesting.

The Night Eternal. The concept was way too ambitious and , in the result, quite beyond the reach of the authors to credibly execute. Additionally , it is surely unconstitutional and disrespectful of a noble tradition for any author to offer an entirely new type of vampire with all sorts of new-fangled attributes, like sucker /stingers and worm infested blood. Simply not acceptable! A vamp without retractable fangs is surely not a vamp! I am afraid Ms Rice still has no credible rival, but anyways "nice try". Frank Solomon.

Great. Wonderful. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I even teared up at the end. Definitely a good read.

Night Eternal. Found Night Eternal on NY Times list, discovered it was the last in a trilogy. Decided to start with the first and couldn't put them down. Read all 3 books in less than 2 weeks, can't wait for the movie versions (please??).

The night eternal.. Worth the wait. The entire trilogy was excellent.

The Night Eternal. Now stop edge of your seat! Great read, when's the movie?

The Night Eternal. Incredible finish to the best vampire series of all time. There is no comparison. Now on to the movie Russell Brand as the master (Bolivar) Denzel as ephraim

Good ending. Good ending to a good series. Recommended reading.

Mr.. Great trilogy!...Read the last one in a day! Highly recommended!

A sad but satisfying conclusion to a great series.. Now that I've just read all three books in the series – and finished The Night Eternal 25 minutes ago – and increasing my respect for these two authors, I can definitely say that the last 10-20 pages of the book both took me by surprise and was very satisfying. It is not the typical feel-good ending with smiles and high-fives, but ended with a great sense of conclusion and understanding. This book, more so than the others due to the change in time and circumstances, provides much more character analysis and psychology with insights into Eph, Fet, Nora, and Gus, not to mention the disturbing progression of Zach and his circumstances. It is depressing but an interesting human study to watch Eph fall so much, while Fet and Nora (and Gus) taking such responsibility with their situation. Anyways, this is a must-read but only within the series as a whole. Do not attempt to read this as a stand-alone story (which the authors claim is possible) as it will leave you significantly grasping for so much more from the characters and narrative – mostly with the loss of Setrakian at the end of the The Fall.

Epic Conclusion!!!!. Just read it!

Awesome!!. Read the trilogy! Awesome, Awesome, Awesome

Great. I kind of had a feeling of how it was going to end but I don't care. It was worth the wait. The trilogy was great and totally worth the read.

The Strain Trilogy. Great reading. All3books.

A real Vampire book. Guillermo and Chuck tell an amazing story through the trilogy. The vision of Guillermo and the superb writing of Chuck are a deadly combination that kept me thirsting for more. Thank you for the escape from my stressful days and the amazing entertainment value. This will be a trilogy to read again and again. Anyone that longs for hard core sci-fi and post-apocalyptic entertainment, look no further. There are no loose ends in this story and it's intricate subplots. The only way this gets better is to one day see Guillermo del Toro's vision on the silver screen!
