Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky Book Summary

INSIDE APPLE reveals the secret systems, tactics and leadership strategies that allowed Steve Jobs and his company to churn out hit after hit and inspire a cult-like following for its products.

If Apple is Silicon Valley's answer to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, then author Adam Lashinsky provides readers with a golden ticket to step inside. In this primer on leadership and innovation, the author will introduce readers to concepts like the "DRI" (Apple's practice of assigning a Directly Responsible Individual to every task) and the Top 100 (an annual ritual in which 100 up-and-coming executives are tapped a la Skull & Bones for a secret retreat with company founder Steve Jobs).

Based on numerous interviews, the book offers exclusive new information about how Apple innovates, deals with its suppliers and is handling the transition into the Post Jobs Era. Lashinsky, a Senior Editor at Large for Fortune, knows the subject cold: In a 2008 cover story for the magazine entitled The Genius Behind Steve: Could Operations Whiz Tim Cook Run The Company Someday he predicted that Tim Cook, then an unknown, would eventually succeed Steve Jobs as CEO.

While Inside Apple is ostensibly a deep dive into one, unique company (and its ecosystem of suppliers, investors, employees and competitors), the lessons about Jobs, leadership, product design and marketing are universal. They should appeal to anyone hoping to bring some of that Apple magic to their own company, career, or creative endeavor.

Excellent read for anyone. A very informative book that doesn't speculate or claims to know all of Apple's ways but instead gives a nice peek behind the scenes of how this amazing company operates. Although I disagree with his closing statements I found his writing to be unbiased and refreshing. This is not a fan boy fantasy tale but good and in-depth journalism at it's finest.

Elucidating. Some very helpful insight here to the way Apple actually works. A great companion to the Isacson bio; some smart writing towards the end about the future of Apple. Well worth reading.

Lack of insight. Although well written this book reveals that the author knows the same amount about Apple and its employees as everyone else: very little. Everything in the book is already well documented and I would not recommend this book. Some mentions of important players in Apple such as Scott Forstall, his intense ambition and arguments with Tony Fadell are interesting but are not backed up with any evidence. It is thus impossible to discern whether there is truth in this or just mere speculation on the part of the author. Much better to read Walter Isaacson's 'Steve Jobs'.

Great Book!!. Just awesome!!

Shedding much light on an amazing business organization.. Very thoughtful, fair minded and well written by a longtime observer who neither a worshiper nor critic. Removes much of the mystery and answers many of the questions I never new to ask about a truly special company I have admired since I bought my IIe.

Mediocre at best.. This book fails to capture the true essence of Apple. The way the author has analyzed some of Apple's action I believe is inaccurate. With that being said, this book does have some pretty interesting short stories about Apple.

Meh. 70 percent regurgitated stuff and 30 percent new tidbits. Most hard core fans and followers know most of this. It is ironic that if anyone at Apple discloses info it is immediate termination, but yet there are some interesting accounts of private meetings and the details in this book. Makes me wonder....

Inside Look at Apple. As far as possible, this book delves into the inner workings of this admired but secretive company. After reading this book, I can say learned a lot about Apple and especially its two famous CEOs. Partly because I am an Apple enthusiast but mostly because it’s so well-written and organized well by chapters, I do highly recommend it.

Expected more. This book provides a summary of many of the key characteristics and values that define Apple, but fails to deliver any deeper insight that one might expect given the title. None of the information presented in the book provides groundbreaking insight inside Apple. The redeeming quality of the book is that it gathers information that is generally scattered across many different sources and concentrates it into a single volume. Unfortunately the author did not take to heart the Apple value of Simplify, simplify, simplify. If had the book could have concisely presented the same material in less than a third of the volume. This book is a useful addition to the library of executives who aspire to replicate some of the success Apple has achieved, as well to Apple fans wanting a more consolidated reference of some of Apple's key characteristics and values, but it falls short on its verbosity and failure to provide new information worthy of the title.

No new information.... For those who are true Apple purists, you will not find any new information in this book. While it is well written and there are great interviews from previous Apple employees, most of what was written you can find through other articles and blogs. The pure Apple nerds, like myself, have read through blogs and other articles to see the inner workings of Apple. I thought this boom would be more profound in the sense it would take us into Jonny Ive's lab, but it did not. It was a great effort, but I would check this book out from the library.

So so. While the first part of the book was somewhat informative, I found finishing the book was tough. Most of the information I hope to gather was in the first few chapters. The later part of the book seemed like old stories just told again. If you aren't too familiar with apple's history, this book will be good for you. If, like myself, you are very familiar and have followed it since before the return of Jobs the insights into the business practices are in the first few chapters. It is worth that read but the last part of the book - not so much in my opinion.

Fascinating Insight. This is a wonderful read along with Walter Isaacson's book. After reading both I feel like I might have one foot inside the door of Apple in Cupertino. The company still works in mysterious ways however the book offers some really good snapshots of the inside. Being an avid owner and user of many Apple devices I have a better understanding of why an Apple retail store is like a magnet and draws me in every time I get close to one.

Inside Apple. I found this book to be very informative and complying. Having a chance to peek inside one of America's most successful technology companies and see the inner working exposed was an amazing experience.

Just OK. There is nothing outstanding about this book. It is just a restating of the reporting and general knowledge that has been out there about Apple for a while, with a few new but unimportant anecdotes thrown in. That said, it is interesting and well-written, and approaches the subject from a business perspective rather than the typical Silicon Valley icon perspective.

Insane!!. For business owners, managers, a must read.

This book has nothing new!!!. If you have read Steve jobs book then there is nothing new here. This book is also written in the least engaging way. And everything is just recycled. This author seems to have the least access into apple. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!

Not as much "Inside Apple" as "Inside Steve". Having just read Jobs' biography, I was hoping that this book would give more color to the company. It didn't. While the last chapter dives into post-Jobsian Apple and starts to get speculative about what that future holds, the rest of the book was essentially a much shorter biography on Jobs than look inside Apple the company. Perhaps this is a limitation of Apple's own doing (their notorious secrecy prevents just about everyone from really knowing much - and is oft-addressed as a problem in this book). But that simply means that there really isn't enough material to even WRITE this book as intended. What was written is a good story. But Jobs' official biography is much better.

Not involving. I would say. Poorly written, many mistakes. Chapters are overly long. Often you lose track of what you are reading, probably book is released only for the desire of making money on the wave of hype for Apple and Steve Jobs

Awesome. A lot of new but a lot of old stuff.

Too short and to negative. Many people will disagree with the opinion of the author. Apple is NOT doomed without Steve Jobs.

Great business book about a No-Compromise Culture. This book gives a rare look behind secret curtain at Apple. Anyone who leads a company will discover ways to rethink their organizations. This book is really about the discipline and sense of purpose of an entire company culture to intensely focus on what it needs to get right ... and why so many fail at it. Neil Ducoff Author of "No-Compromise Leadership"

Brilliant. One word says enough. It shows everything in the company, even the details of departments in the company that have been kept secret. How come it's in iBooks? :P

Double tap pics to enlarge. Like title says this will bring you to a separate screen where you can pinch and zoom as normal. Though still blurry for org board.

How to read org chart. To read the charts you must highlight and select. It will fill the screen and you can then read all of the charts. Hope this helps! Great iBook.

Nice. It seems to be a nice book, but the images resolution is terrible.... And everybody is saying "how could this be selling at iBooks " but apple cannot decide what would be selling here just because it talks about the company... There are nothing on the rules saying: if your book say anything about this company, you can't sell it here.

Nothing new. This book tells of stories already in circulation among the Apple elite. It is written for 3rd graders and for the crowd that is looking for an easy read. It feels anti-Apple as well.

Very fascinating. Steve Jobs biography was about Jobs/Apple. This book is about Apple/Jobs. It's great.

Very insightful. I read Isaacson's Steve Jobs' bio and this book is a bit more insightful and balanced look into Jobs and Apple. Highly recommended for those interested in the company and visionary.

A good sneak peak at Apple. This book offers a good look behind the scenes of what may be the worlds most popular company. While no shocking secrets are revealed, details about an employees first day all the way to ex-employee meeting room stories are revealed. You will definitely learn a thing or two while enjoying some funny situations described by employees.

Great book. Loved the book, I expected a lot more stories of the inner workings of Apple.

Interesting Read. I recently finished this book and I must say it left me craving more. The author gives you a very good insight as to what goes on at Apple but only to a certain extent. I found myself at times wanting to know more about the company a whole but was sometimes disappointed. I completely understand there were just some things the author was unable to discuss but I just wanted that "finish" to certain subjects. Overall, I gave this book a 4 start rating and it would have received a 5 star rating if there were some questions answered...understandably they could not be answered and I guess at is what makes Apple a superior company...the mystery of not knowing.

Much better than I expected. I was worried this will be a book filled with anecdotes about how mean or brilliant Jobs was. There is some of that but the underlaying subject is the company not the man.

Loved it!!. As an apple fanatic, I found this book fascinating! I would definitely recommend it to any other apple fans out there!

Expected more.... Very short read, not a lot of insight beyond what is already publicly known.

Not much new material. Noting really new here that you can't find elsewhere.

Very good quickly read book. This book reads like an extended business mag article rather than a chronicle, a la Ron Chernow. In such respects the author, whoever he his, did a great job of presenting insight without overshadowing it with ego. I took several notes, made some philosophical observations and re-read my thoughts on some precepts of a presumptive nature on business culture. In short, great read and $13 isn't much money for something which cultivates raised insight in a well-honed manner. Not poetry but not robotic.

Full of phony information.. Very inaccurate.

Nope. The first 35% wasn't bad at all. The rest of the book felt rather "random". A lot feels written based on assumption, assumptions I have lived by. I personally think if you followed apple and Steve jobs you could write 80% of this book.

Not all that great ....... After reading the biography an then reading insanely great this book fell short of what I hoped that would have been better.

Awesome book. Very informative, gave me a good idea of what it's like inside apple.

Inside Apple: An Amazing Read. Lashinsky provides tremendous insight into the Apple culture. This is a must read for every C level leader and entrepreneur. I simply could not put it down. Carl Sarfi - Founder/President Maximum Business Performance

Great book. Gives great insight into a great company!

Never gets very close. If you are looking for a detailed insiders look at Apple, this misses the mark. It's feels rushed. It really is a magazine article that was made into book length. As an Apple fan, I stuck around to the end; but that's not a ringing endorsement.
