Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse: Trudge by Shawn Chesser Book Summary

"Through a combination of tight, well-structured plots and fully realized characters, Chesser has emerged as one of the top indie writers in the business." -Joe McKinney, two time Bram Stoker Award winner and best-selling author of the Dead World series.

For Cade Grayson, husband, father, and former Delta Force operator, that one warm sunny Saturday in July—later to be labeled Z-Day by some anonymous person probably long dead—began like all the others before, and none since.
With his daughter, Raven and wife, Brook, away visiting her parents in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Cade hopes his immediate future holds nothing but an easy chair, Mariners on the tube, and paring down a honey-do list a mile long.
But those hopes were quickly dashed and his life forever changed when news broke of a clash in downtown Portland between soldiers from the Oregon National Guard and hundreds of anarchist protesters suddenly turned violent and, by one anchor’s account, blood-thirsty and cannibalistic.
As the first waves of injured bystanders, Guardsmen, and rioters arrived at hospitals in and around Portland, it became apparent that a deadly new disease had been unleashed on the population.
Whether the virus was naturally occurring or an escaped lab experiment Cade hadn’t a clue, and he wasn’t especially concerned until he learned of its unprecedented virulence, unusual method of transference, and the fact that, according to the talking heads on the news, it brought the newly dead back to life, semi-mindless, and with an insatiable desire to feed on the flesh of the living.
Armed with this new information and now seeing the bigger cities such as Washington D.C., New York, and Los Angeles rocked by the rapidly spreading scourge, Cade ignores the volley of contradictory edicts drawn up by the White House and set into motion by FEMA and DHS, dusts off his tools of war, and loads his truck with supplies.
Unable to get ahold of Brook and Raven and unwilling to leave them at the mercy of some distant politician’s inability to hold the nation together, he begins an impossible 3,000 mile journey across a reeling United States with presumably millions of infected in his path and only one acceptable outcome: find Brook and Raven alive—or die trying.

Good read, but why be so politically cynical. thought this book was great, but every time I got really into it, the authors politics came creeping in, generally having nothing to do with the actual story line. it's like some agenda is trying to be met. I mean really, blaming all the ills of society prior to the outbreak on corrupted democrats, and the not so veiled accusations that Obama is an incompetent Muslim has no bearing on the story line. political discourse in a story like this is to some degree important, as politicians often consider political ramifications before making a decision. However, having been in the military myself, and knowing more than a little about what happens during military actions, presidents and congressmen always look to their military leaders, and 9 times out of 10 will do exactly as instructed. World War Z is a good example of this, or even Tom Clancy's Sum of all fears. I do like that the author does not get so attached to some of the characters that he is afraid to kill them off, and that a woman is now president, and at this point is appears to be thought of by the author as competent. I am going to read the next book, if only to see what underhanded comments the author will offer up about democratic presidents.

Conservative crap. Just another excuse to hate on “lefties” and love Fox News. The story gets better the farther on you go, with less political bent, but still rough with poor editing. Will read book two and see if it’s worth pursuing after that.

Trudge.. I read a lot of apocalyptic books and this is one of the best,

Great book, great political views. Aside from a few grammar errors (who really cares anyways?), it's a great book. Absolutely brutal from start to finish. I almost found it to be too brutal at parts, which was something I felt "World War Z" lacked in ways. I think the people complaining about Shawn's political views need to thicken their skin a bit. The author has opinions just like the rest of us. Overall, if you want a gruesome story that from time to time makes you wince, this is the book for you.

Loved it!. Great start to an amazing series! A page burner you won't put down! Start to finish a great read!

Trudge- Shawn Chesser. From the very beginning of this book til it's conclusion it sucked me in I couldn't wait to to turn the pages , if you are a fan of the genre you should be reading this.

I give it a solid B. I give it a solid B. I liked it well enough to read the next book in the series. I almost didn’t read it based on some reviews complaining about too much politics. That’s hogwash IMO. There may be 10 total sentences dedicated to political opinion. It’s not a big deal. The story is pretty typical, but I’m an apocalypse junkie, so it kept my attention. I like the military references. It’s light entertainment and I enjoyed it.

Get it, got it, good!. It's like Tom Clancy wrote a zombie story. Really good.

Great book. Fast paced, good knowledge of special forces. I am downloading the next book now? Thanks for the good story From Old SF guy

Interesting. Although it is an interesting read, it has many distracting grammar and format errors that range from improper paragraph structure to not distinguishing speakers to misuse of "were" when "we're" was intended. If you want to read about zombies and survival, get the book, but ignore that the writer and publisher did not care to follow rules associated with writing.

Trudge. Awesome Book!

Go away. 💀Stay out of our genre HACK💀 (>_<),,I, #%|€*£@ stupid republicans are not welcome

Great read. Great book! Awesome action thriller. Will be reading all these books. I just started book 2. As for the political aspect, if you don't like it then don't read it!!! There's a beautiful thing called free speech that lets people write about whatever they want.

Not bad, but..... I think the author engages in a lil to much worship of soldiers. This is my opinion as a vet. I love the military. But I also love zombie books and this book spends to little on zombies. The appeal of zombie books, to me, is the hopelessness and terror a world of human predators poses. That is underfed in this book. It's a whole lotta Super-Soldier nonsense. Dial back the military worship. Flesh out your characters. Give them flaws and vulnerabilities. This series has potential.

Political undertones eerily viable. For all those that don't like the political undertones, wake up! You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you. I appreciated a horror story and the underlying parallels to our current administration. The China and EMP references are very applicable to our times as well as the ability to bear arms. As for the story line, I love a good zombie thriller and this was fun reading with a political thread. Nice!

Great book. Great story.. I highly recommend it if you are into the military take on the Zombie apocalypse. Special forces are cool too!

Trudge. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Trudge: A Zombie Apocalypse Novel. This was a well written and thought out addition to the zombie genre. The characters were well developed and believable. The plot was what you would expect with some twists and turns for interest. My one criticism, and it's a big one, is the clear political leanings of the author which tend to shake you out of the story. The disrespect towards Muslims was troubling and unwelcome in the midst of an otherwise engaging story. Additionally the story seemed to just cut off, as though the number of words/pages required had been reached and the author just stopped there. Understandably there are sequels, and we expect and hope for them....but not at the expense of the novel standing on its own. All in all I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 because of the above.

Readable for $1.... I did think it was a pretty good zombie book for the most part. The character development was mediocre so you could find yourself not caring if some lived or died. Definitely written for a sequel which I find annoying because the story doesn't stand alone. Also had to agree with another reviewer that the authors political views were way too prevalent and distracting...but not so much that I stopped reading. Wish that he had just kept his raging conservatism out of the fantasy novel and stuck with the story... All that said, I'll probably read the next installment.

Trudge. Awesome book. Very exciting from start to end. Even for Japanese person (who's first language isn't English), everything came out alive like movie!

Best ever, hands down!. This is the best zombie apocalypse series I've seen. Brilliant writing with a very detailed and well thought storyline. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read what's next!!

Great Book!. Fast paced and exciting! An action packed flesh eating zombie adventure.

Meh. Bought it on a whim for .99, and I overpaid. Agree with those saying the crude political interjections (President Odero from Chicago? Really?) disrupt the flow, but the story is so poorly constructed and executed that it doesn't do much harm in the grand scheme of things. It will probably resonate well with certain members of the military with ground combat experience or training, and those civilians who wish they were among that group, but those looking for more original story and refined prose should try elsewhere.

Trudge. Great story!!! Buying your next book now! Thank you Mark Tufo for suggesting it.

Wild ride!. Great read and only the start to an amazing series. Buckle up for a wild ride!

Nonsense!. As a fan of the zombie genre I was optimistic about this book after reading all of the positive reviews. Sadly this book is little more than a thinly veiled political diatribe pushing anti Obama conspiracy theories. If you are a birther or think Obama is a secret muslim conspiring against america, then this book is for you! I made it about half way through the book before deleting it from my library. I would recommend saving your money and looking elsewhere.

Political Hack. Now we know what Chester does when he takes a break from Fox News and beating off into his Rush Limbaugh handkerchief, he attempts to write. Clearly the only reason for him to create this lump of literary pus was to inflict on unwitting readers his sick fantasy of killing the POTUS and his family. He wants you to waste $5 on his pathetic attempt at self worth. Do yourself a favor. Get a nice crisp $5 bill and use it to give yourself paper cuts on the webbing between your fingers, you'll enjoy it more than wasting you time on this garbage!

OUTSTANDING. As a huge zombie fan, I've been through quite a few books of this sort. Only a few really stand out, and this book will definitely occupy a spot near the top. I highly recommend reading it.

Liked it!. Good start to the series, likable characters

Would recommend. It’s a good book and I’ll be buying the next one to continue the story.

Overly contrived addition to the series. Apocalyptic but predictable, with two dimensional characterisation and a wealth of cliches. A bit like discovering a decent supermarket wine, only to discover the second case is a different year and not nearly as good.

Brilliant!!!. This book stands out amongst the large number of zombie books currently on the market. Well written and gripping. A must read :-)

Awesome. I really enjoyed how it changed in between the people give you a bigger picture in mind in what's happening all round the all. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes zombie stories and I look forward to the next installment.

Trudge. One of the best starts to the end of the world can't wait to read book two

Interesting. Wasn't the worst nor the best zombie book I have read, and I have read a lot. Very predictable and cliched with the plot going the same way as most zombie books nowadays.

Summary of books 1-6. I really liked the storylines- a military person’s angle especially- and as said above, the different POVs (Point Of Views) was interesting. Having said that, there is a character that deserves a special award. Most. Annoying. Character. Award goes to our protag’s wife, Brooke. By the last book I was ready to charge MY M4 and aim it squarely at her head. Maybe I’m too distracted by her but I felt she really let the books down. I felt like her POVs were written in a half-hearted way; she’s meant to be a military wife but acts like a mercurial, petulant child. And she heaps it on a few other characters because she feels so ‘above’ them, but does silly things and expects to cop no **** for it. Frankly, I hope she dies in book 7. Sooner, rather than later. My only other gripe about the series is the endless supplies of bullets and weaponry. Without saying too much, it’s sort out of context with the storyline.
