Adelchi by Alessandro Manzoni Book Summary
Alla fine del secolo VIII l'Italia visse uno dei momenti più convulsi della sua storia. Carlo Magno, re dei Franchi, invase la penisola su richiesta del Papa e sconfisse Desiderio, sovrano dei Longobardi e di tutto il Nord Italia. L'Adelchi non si limita a rileggere criticamente quelle vicende così tormentate, ma cerca di dare loro un senso più ampio. Ecco così che Adelchi, figlio di Desiderio, è il ritratto del principe moralmente integro ma costretto dalle circostanze della storia ad assumere un ruolo che finirà per schiacciarlo. Scritta da Manzoni tra il 1820 e il 1822, l'Adelchi è senza dubbio la più famosa tragedia dell'Ottocento romantico, qui riproposta con un apparato di note e un'introduzione che ne indicano le novità letterarie e ideali.
