“A stunner.”—Justin Cronin

“It’s never the disasters you see coming that finally come to pass—it’s the ones you don’t expect at all,” says Julia, in this spellbinding novel of catastrophe and survival by a superb new writer. Luminous, suspenseful, unforgettable, The Age of Miracles tells the haunting and beautiful story of Julia and her family as they struggle to live in a time of extraordinary change.

On an ordinary Saturday in a California suburb, Julia awakes to discover that something has happened to the rotation of the earth. The days and nights are growing longer and longer; gravity is affected; the birds, the tides, human behavior, and cosmic rhythms are thrown into disarray. In a world that seems filled with danger and loss, Julia also must face surprising developments in herself, and in her personal world—divisions widening between her parents, strange behavior by her friends, the pain and vulnerability of first love, a growing sense of isolation, and a surprising, rebellious new strength. With crystalline prose and the indelible magic of a born storyteller, Karen Thompson Walker gives us a breathtaking portrait of people finding ways to go on in an ever-evolving world.

“Gripping drama . . . flawlessly written; it could be the most assured debut by an American writer since Jennifer Egan’s Emerald City.”—The Denver Post

“Pure magnificence.”—Nathan Englander

“Provides solace with its wisdom, compassion, and elegance.”—Curtis Sittenfeld

“Riveting, heartbreaking, profoundly moving.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Age of Miracles. LOVED it!. Fascinating look into an apocalyptic phenomenon mixed with the angst of a young awkward teenager. Well done! I hated for it to end.

What was the Miracle?. This is the diary of an 11 year old girl. Perhaps a juvenile audience would be more appreciative of her thoughts and outlook on the world in peril.

Fantastic!. This is by far my all time favorite book! The fact that this book was so simple, that there wasn’t a whole lot of action like in a normal end of the world story, made this novel so incredibly special, and it allowed it stand out from other apocalyptic books that I’ve read. Who wants to read about death and sadnesses? It makes me sad. And although this book is quite sad, the fact that Julia continued on with normal life made it seem both timely and timeless. Walker is brilliant in her writing; can’t wait to read her other books!

What a shame. Such an original story; such great characters. But very little development of either. It's a story with great potential that goes nowhere. The author could have done so much more. The ending is the biggest disappointment. It's like she either got tired of writing or ran out of things to say.

It was very good. Would be a good summer reading project

A smart, sensitive page turner. Age of Miracles is a small miracle itself -- a richly observed and life affirming portrait of a 12 year old girl's experiences of the slow death of our planet and the people she loves most dearly. I devoured this book in a day, something I've not done in a very long time. An impressive literary debut for author Karen Thompson Walker.

A great read ... It'll go too quickly. ... because the story is gripping in its science and how it affects the characters. I wanted to know more about the bigger picture of the slowing from a science viewpoint. I also thought that, if the story was to reflect how life really goes, it would be about the speeding up of time, since as one gets older and older, time seems to fly by. However, when one is a kid, time does seem impossibly slow, doesn't it? Left me pondering about time and the preciousness of life, and how truly lucky we all are to be here, as well as the importance of taking good care of our home planet.

What Miracle?. Depressing, sad, what's the point? Even after reading the Q&A and reading group questions at the end, I left with nothing more than a hollow feeling of despair. What a waste of time. Wish I could remember who recommend this book. How did it end up on my reading list? I read for enjoyment, to get insight into the human race, to discover myself. This book satisfied none of that. I had hoped for more from an author who lives in Iowa.

A miracle of a book. The Age of Miracles is a bittersweet story about the fragility of all things we think of as permanent and true--like the clockwork precision of the Earth's rotation. This gem of a novel explores what might happen if we could no longer count on touchstones like gravity and the rising and setting of the Sun. I highly recommend!

The Age of Miracles. This is a haunting coming of age story. As the earth's rotation slows, it changes everything about life as we know it. Julia, so alone in her adolescent world, becomes the reflective voice that sees not only the damage to the earth, but the damage we do to each other. The writing is beautiful in its detail and simplicity. The premise is disturbing, but the voice is authentic and portrays the preteen sensibility in a way that is believable and moving. You feel Julia's inner struggles and joys as she feels them. It is a book that will stay with you for some time, and one that will appeal to tweens, teens and adults, both male and female. Be sure to put it on your must read list.

Okay but. I was disappointed. I expected more. I kept waiting for something to really happen. And I did not find the ending satisfying at all.

Excellent. I felt that I was also experiencing the slowing and all the emotions the narrator was feeling. Very well written.

The Age of Miracles. A beautifully written, melancholy and frightening story about coming of age at the end of an age. Read it in one day. Thought the title was misleading, however.

Lovely writing. The writing was lovely, although I did tire of the foreshadowing teasers placed so frequently in the book. The characters were very believable, especially the narrator. I would not classify the story as sci-fi and that was what I was hoping for. If you enjoy a coming of age story of a middle school girl, then read this novel.

Had such promise!. This book had so much potential to be amazing, yet the author failed to pull the trigger at the end. By the end, I was emotionally invested in reading the end of mankind. Yet, it was very anti-climatic. It would have been one of the best novels of all time if the main character died due to the slowing. It's too bad.

Love. This book is at once riveting, heartbreaking and terrifying. Youthful love set against the backdrop of a dying planet. Really enjoyable though fatalistic!

Nearly as depressing as The Bell Jar. Well written, but extremely sad

Original concept. I liked this book. It is an easy read. The concept of how the world is ending is original. However there is nothing beautiful or unique about Walker's writing.

Sad sad sad. With constant ominous foreshadowing, there is not a single ray of hope in this futuristic tragedy. With so much darkness in the world today, do we really need books like this. Even though the two youthful main characters are optimistic about their uncertain future, the story is unforgiving. There is no climax, just the steady beat of life that will only worsen with each increasingly long day. Can't think of one redeeming quality within its pages. The book's description does not accurately prepare the reader for what lies within its cover. Pass this one by and choose instead to read something less terminally sad.

Let down. I agree with so many of the other reviews in that this book was a big disappointment. The premise had so much promise, but the story was never fully developed and fell so tragically flat. Definitely not a science-fiction novel.

The age of not so many miracles.... This book is beautifully written. It's prose is riddled with a sense of nostalgia and longing for simpler times. Taking place in the Californian desert is a story that is both in the past and the future, however the slowness of the book is then met with a rapid end. A great first effort by the author, however, after investing your time and emotions in the story the ending does not deliver. I would still suggest reading this book for the beautiful imagery and the warm feeling it creates even though it is about the apocalypse. I have gone on to read other books and yet still wish I could find one that creates the same sensation. It is a story that will linger with you long after you read it.

It gave me back the pleasure of reading............. I haven't read a book in a long while......but I knew I would love this.....it made me feel like I was living in similar world with a different catastrophe taking place....only we think we know why it's taking place and we are all watching it take place in slow motion...reading this gave me a melancholia for something I hadn't lost yet...

Scary. Good read. Only three stars because I hate the f bomb in my books. Scary because it seems possible that this could happen. Yikes! Hard to not think about after reading. Haha.

Very imaginative. Fantastic story, characters very credible, all around a good read!

The Age of Miracles. Interesting, moves along well, a bit disturbing, worth reading. I think the title is misleading--minimally confusing--given the content of the novel, but overall a good book.

Boring. Despite a compelling premise and potentially-interesting cast, the story never takes off. It felt like pages and pages of the same short, dull descriptive sentences leading up to a dull, pointless ending. I forced myself to read it for book club, but it was a chore! The geophysical phenomena could have been more intriguing if they weren't so vaguely described. The characters could have been more intriguing if they were better developed. I give the book two stars (instead of one) because: the writing isn't bad and there are a few gems of wisdom throughout.

Loved it. This book was so wonderful-I read it in one sitting. I didn't find it to be dark and gloomy as others did, but rather, I found it a bit creepy in its' plausibility.

Haunting. Beautiful and haunting. A story of hope and survival through awkward teenage years, a story trapped in the death of the planet.

Story never really develops. Story starts strong, but about half way through I realized that too much of the story centered around the "problem" and the human connections which make a story compelling never took off.

A great coming to age story ( not a sci-fi novel). To just to be clear THIS BOOK IS NOT A SCIFI NOVEL!!!!!! As a 14 year old in middle school, I really love this book. It a great story because kinda show how as world ends, the main character feel like her world is coming to an end since she in middle school. The narrator 6 th grader, Julia, has lot more to deal with the. The fa that earth gravitation pull is becoming stronger. Her best friend, moron, move to Utah after " the slowing". Her parents are beginning to argue. On top of all of this, the boy she has a huge crush on, Seth, has mom that is dying of cancer. This book is much more of a slow paced sorta of coming age novel then sci-fi and could have probably been a young adult/ adult novel, like, the book A Fault in Our Stars ( by the way, that great book). This while getting such mix review. If you start book, expect something about crazy world ending all of a sudden , like Life as We Know it, you will be disappointed. If come to book, expect a teenage memoir, then you will like it

Hard to rate. This book grabbed me, but in the end was anticlimactic, I kept waiting for something to happen. Some payoff for continuing to read. But like a mediocre life, it just continued to drift to the end.

Meh. Ok. Not really my style I guess. I would have liked to have seen more terror in my end of the world novels. Interesting concept though. But about there being increased gravity and that affecting baseball players and such, if you do the math, like any self respecting engineer would, the slowing of the earth would have negligible effects on gravity.

The Age of Miracles. A beautiful read.

Incredible. Poignant with depth. Loved it.

Don't waste your money. Worst book I've read in a long time! Nonsensical, poorly researched, not sure how this literary marvel got published. Save your money!!!!

A great read!. I really enjoyed this book. Heard about it from an interview with the author on NPR last week and bought it right away. I loved the premise, like something out of the Twilight Zone. But it wasn't just sci-fi... At the heart of it is a story about relationships and growing up. The author has a nice feel for story telling, dropping little suspenseful lines here and there. I highly recommend it!

Effortless writing. Though immensely complex in theme and structure, the writing of this book makes turning the pages effortless. She's made the grand and complex easy and intimate. A wonderful story with great complex characters. It's a sort of disaster novel, but the heroes aren't scientists or generals. In fact, there are no heroes at all, just a young girl and her family. Her first love, trials at school and family life set against the backdrop of calamity. Hardly a word out of place. I loved it.

Simple yet powerful. This novel invokes an exquisite, profound nostalgia in the reader through a immaculately formed narrator. It examines paradox in its purest sense, that life is simple but life is also complex. The existence trees, grass, regrets, fears, and hopes is taken for granted much too often - Walker takes the world out of its orbit and brings it right back again.

Interesting. The description of this book enticed me as it seemed like such an unlikely occurrence. The sun is one if the few things in this world that we always know we can count on, like clockwork. What happens when that, too is no longer reliable. The way it unfolds makes the book hard to put down. I enjoyed the story of a little girl growing up despite all that was happening around her. Very good read.

Age of a great story!. Walker hit a home run with this story! This is a great book for teens as it shows how fragile our lives on earth really are! Writing is truly thought provoking & characters are awesome! This why I read young adult fiction.. Buy the actual book to avoid mishaps of technology! I did!

Waiting and waiting.... What a let down, waiting for the story to become something irreversibly important and meaningful, which never happens. Just a plodding recount of boring details with no end or lesson. An abrupt ending disappoints.

page turner!. Great book! Extremely well written! I could not stop reading from the moment I downloaded it. Karen Thompson Walker's descriptions are so incredible that the little suburb feels tangible plus, you can feel every overwhelming emotion and thought in Julia. All the awkwardness, curiosity, and wonder of adolescence. I was hoping for the ending to be a tiny bit happier but it was an elegant.

Great escape read. Great quick read. Very relatable, sweet and sad.

Moving. Very well written and a moving book. You find yourself thinking about it all during the day.

Age of miracles. The title is very deceiving. Depressing book. Certainly not recommended for a teen.

Great. Very creative and touching story~~~ well written and thought provoking, would recommend!

Wow!. An amazing story! Full of both dread and wonder. You might Recognize yourself

Very moving. Some say the world will end in fire, some say ice. The author of this moving book wrings the end of days from a simple development, never explained, that the rotation of the days slows, lengthening the days--and nights--into the unendurable. The science takes a back seat to a finely wrought love story and family saga of survival.

Disturbing & Brilliant. What an impressive debut novel. I could not put it down. While I was wrought with anxiety while reading it, it's 3am and I just had to finish the book! I found the content both unsettling and thought-provoking. A must-read, but I suggest doing it in daylight rather than nighttime!

age of miracles. I read this book many years ago and just reread it. Pretty sad in places but worth the time. A coming of age story set against the slowing down of the earths rotation. Eventually, with 2 weeks of daylight then 2 weeks of darkness, you wonder how man can survive. It is never explained why the earths rotation slows, a perpetual backdrop of gloom. But I did enjoy it the 2nd time around.
