In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner Book Summary

A beautiful celebration of the power of hope, this New York Times bestselling novel tells the story of a girl who comes of age during the Cambodian genocide.

You are about to read an extraordinary story, a PEN Hemingway Award finalist “rich with history, mythology, folklore, language and emotion.” It will take you to the very depths of despair and show you unspeakable horrors. It will reveal a gorgeously rich culture struggling to survive through a furtive bow, a hidden ankle bracelet, fragments of remembered poetry. It will ensure that the world never forgets the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime in the Cambodian killing fields between 1975 and 1979, when an estimated two million people lost their lives. It will give you hope, and it will confirm the power of storytelling to lift us up and help us not only survive but transcend suffering, cruelty, and loss.

For seven-year-old Raami, the shattering end of childhood begins with the footsteps of her father returning home in the early dawn hours, bringing details of the civil war that has overwhelmed the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Soon the family’s world of carefully guarded royal privilege is swept up in the chaos of revolution and forced exodus. Over the next four years, as the Khmer Rouge attempts to strip the population of every shred of individual identity, Raami clings to the only remaining vestige of her childhood—the mythical legends and poems told to her by her father. In a climate of systematic violence where memory is sickness and justification for execution, Raami fights for her improbable survival. Displaying the author’s extraordinary gift for language, In the Shadow of the Banyan is a brilliantly wrought tale of human resilience.

Assignment Turned Favorite. I was assigned to read this book for my sophomore English class. The first few chapters were kind of hard to get into, but I was amazed with how much I loved this book. The characters and their development living through tragedy are beautiful written. I highly recommend this book!

In the shadow of the banyan. Very moving story. I have read a lot of World War II work and have my own family history related to that time. I did not know very much about the atrocities in Cambodia, except that there were mass killings of educated people in the take over by the Khmer Rouge. I now have a clearer understanding and appreciation of that time in history.

In the shadow of the Banyan. A powerful tale that tugs at one's heart in nearly every page! The story truly does give a voice to all the survival Khmer people who had suffered the atrocities, and also to those who are with us in spirit!

Bad Narrator! Great Book!. I was so frustrated by the narrators detachment from the words as she read them! There was a disregard for punctuation and at times it seemed a lack of comprehension. It made it confusing at times for the listener. She also mispronounced lots of words! Enclave, farang, bourgeois and Khmer to name a few. (My mother is Khmer) It just didn't seem like the narrator cared about what she was reading and it was irritating to me. She didn't do a good job. They should have picked someone else.

In the Shadow of the Banyon. One of the best books I have ever read. A writing through a child's eyes. I could not put the book down. This book is based on a true story. The killing of millions of people through starvation, labor, and just plain murder. How sad that human against human can be so horrific.

Beautiful book. One of my favorite books. A tragic story written in a beautiful way. If you are considering, please read this book.

A moving tribute. Valdez Ratner's tribute to her father and family is at once moving as well as disturbing. Even in the midst of horrifying detail of the suffering imposed upon the Cambodian people by the Khmer Rouge, Ratner conveys the deep meaning of hope and love. Her father's life lives within these pages that portray the will to live, to endure and to fly instilled in her and endowing her with courage and strength.

In the Shadow of the Banyan. What an inspiring story of survival and love during the Cambodia revolutionary invasion in 1975! I couldn't put this book down.

Under the shade of the banyan. Excellent imagery. Maintained throughout book. She is a remarkable victim in that she can clearly see the suffering of others. Unfortunately, extreme loss and suffering often narrow the vision and heart of the sufferer. She must be a truly remarkable woman.

In the Shadow of the Banyan. One of the best books I've read in many months! My husband and I along with some other couples are hoping to visit Cambodia and Viet Nam next year. I realized I knew very little about Cambodia's recent history except that the Khmer Rouge was a cruel and repressive regime. Fortunately I stumbled on to this story. It gives the reader an excellent insight into Cambodia during that era as well as being well researched, well written, and vastly entertaining. I think we will see more from Vaddey Ratner. I certainly hope so!

Reliving memories. Quite a number of years ago, I had the good fortune of an educational tour of Vietnam and Cambodia with two Professors from Cornell University. I clearly remember visiting the "killing fields" and the associated museums, and being so absolutely appalled by what had happened in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. The world knew little about this genocide at the time I visited. This book, so touchingly written, put a real face on that part of history for me. Thanks to the author for her eloquent prose and vivid images of one of the most horrendous slaughters in world history. Susan
