The Zen of Steve Jobs by Caleb Melby, JESS3 & Forbes, LLC Book Summary

An illustrated depiction of Steve Jobs' friendship with Zen Buddhist Kobun Chino Otogawa and the impact it had on Jobs' career
Apple cofounder Steve Jobs (1955-2011) had such an enormous impact on so many people that his life often took on aspects of myth. But much of his success was due to collaboration with designers, engineers and thinkers. The Zen of Steve Jobs tells the story of Jobs' relationship with one such person: Kobun Chino Otogawa.

Kobun was a Zen Buddhist priest who emigrated to the U.S. from Japan in the early 1970s. He was an innovator, lacked appreciation for rules and was passionate about art and design. Kobun was to Buddhism as Jobs was to the computer business: a renegade and maverick. It wasn't long before the two became friends--a relationship that was not built to last.

This graphic book is a reimagining of that friendship. The story moves back and forward in time, from the 1970s to 2011, but centers on the period after Jobs' exile from Apple in 1985 when he took up intensive study with Kobun. Their time together was integral to the big leaps that Apple took later on with its product design and business strategy.

Told using stripped down dialogue and bold calligraphic panels, The Zen of Steve Jobs explores how Jobs might have honed his design aesthetic via Eastern religion before choosing to identify only what he needs and leave the rest behind.

Original as Steve. There's a lot of books about him. But there's no one like this. An original idea, concept and history. Great work! I bought this ebook and now I want the paper version too.

Steve must be rolling in his grave. Images are downloaded only half, I have tried deleting and restarting, emptying cache - everything - I want my money back.

Not an historical account. The first few panels get some important details dead wrong: Soto Zen practitioners sit facing the wall, not the center of the room, dokusan is a face to face meeting, conversation in the Zendo is very rare, etc. This really hurts the credibility of the account in my eyes. In particular, the meeting between Steve and Suzuki Roshi seems unlikely, since Suzuki Roshi died in 1971 and Les Kaye who is now Abbot of the successor to Haiku Zendo, Kannon Do, doesn't remember Steve coming to the sitting group until 1974. Steve was also a big fan of Suzuki Roshi's first book: Zen Mind, Beginners Mind. Nit-picking aside it was an enjoyable read and there are some interesting parts, just don't confuse it with history.

Beautifully done, but a little sparse. I enjoyed the ideas and design of this book immensely. It is beautifully done and I learned both about Steve and Buddhism. It was, however, fairly short and was read in about half an hour. I don't want to sound selfish or ungrateful, but it almost felt like an extended preview of a larger book... Still, a worthwhile read.

FULL SCREEN. Replying to one reviewer's complaint: In addition to the aforementioned Double-Tap to make a single page or image full screen, there exists a Full Screen Setting in the Font Size section under Theme. Here one can make all books full screen if the book edge view is not to one's liking.

Wow..... Truly exceptional. Think I'll go become a Buddhist now...

Finally, a different way of looking at Steve Jobs. Wow. I was really surprised to see Forbes do this kind of thing. It's a short tale, well-told that takes place over almost 30 years in flash backs and flash forwards. Back in the 1980s, Jobs was out of Apple and looking for a mentor, someone to teach him about Zen concepts like Mu and Ma. Those were big later when he started cooking up all the iProducts, simplifying the company so it could focus on mobile devices and laptops that hid their incredible sophistication with simple interfaces, round edges and smooth surfaces. The design of the comic is simple, not busy. They use one color per time period to let you know that you've shifted to a different decade. It's a compact, subtly told story (lots of repeating imagery, circular themes) about a friendship that started out strong and frayed at the end. The end of the book is so sad. Kobun Chino is a great character, who deserves his own book. Steve is captured in all his profane glory. It's a slice of Jobs' life that not everybody has covered in the crush of books and articles that came out in the wake of his death. I have to add that the zooming-up problem of the earlier reviewer is a function of all iBooks, not a problem with this graphic novel. But if you DOUBLE-TAP when the book is open to a page it does zoom up to fill the screen and makes it much more readable. it would be nice if Apple allowed you to zoom even closer to the panels in comics like this one.

Can't wait to read!. This is one thing the world needs to read! Humor, honesty, and the way of life (for some) Great job!

Wow!. One of the best book in a long time. Non sequential events & correlating it back to the genesis of how he got the inspiration from. Great job guys, I will truly miss a genius of our time.

Meh.... Shallow insights. This could have been so much better.

poor reading experience. I'll wait and buy the physical version. This version gives up most of it's screen space to the "fake book" frame that iBooks insists on using. You can't zoom. If the art filled the screen, this book would be ideal for the iPad. As it is, it's barely readable and surely not worth $10, or quite frankly, even $2.
