Honor Bound by Raffaele Sollecito & Andrew Gumbel Book Summary

They were accused of one of the most infamous murders of our time. Targeted by the media, sentenced by the courts, and wrongfully imprisoned for four excruciating years for a crime neither could fathom let alone perpetrate, Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox were the victims in a trial so bizarre it defied all reason. Now, for the first time since his acquittal, Raffaele reveals what really happened between him and his then girlfriend before, during, and after Amanda’s roommate Meredith Kercher’s brutal murder.

Filled with family drama, wild reversals of fortune, and a blow-by-blow account of the legal catastrophe as it unfolded, this harrowing firsthand account sheds fascinating new light on one of the world’s most controversial murder cases. With startling candor, Raffaele shares intimate details about his changing relationship with Amanda—one that veered in a matter of days from giddy romance to grueling police interrogations. Over the next four years, Raffaele was the only solid alibi Amanda had for the night of the murder. He came under unrelenting pressure—from his own family and lawyers as much as the police and prosecution—to change his testimony and stop vouching for her. But he wouldn’t do it. He refused to testify against her to save his own skin, because he knew she would be lost forever.

Raffaele sifts through the wild accusations depicting him as a druggie, a porn addict, and reckless thrill seeker, and shows how these stories were gross distortions of trivial episodes in his young life. With unflinching honesty, he takes readers behind the scenes of the trial of the century—and inside the day-to-day hell of prison life. Finally, and poignantly, Raffaele talks about his first face-to-face reunion with Amanda following their release.

Emotional, disturbing, and ultimately galvanizing, this memoir is more than a true-crime story—it is a riveting account of an egregious miscarriage of justice, of public condemnation, and personal survival. Honor Bound is also, at its heart, a tragic love story about a young man who trusted his feelings, refused to give up hope, and ultimately triumphed.

Incredible!. You've story is so sad. Its also well past the time for it to be told and what a story it was!! It's even worse than we knew here in America where we were well aware that Amanda Knox wasn't guilty. The sad part for me is that I'm the daughter of an Italian American with two daughters of my own. Unfortunately, having read your book and knowing now how horrible the justice system is, my girls won't ever be traveling to Italy. I read The Monster of Florence and knew Mignini was crazy, but who could have seen what a monster he was as well. I will pray that you get some sort of life back. God Bless. Everyone....READ THIS BOOK.

Why I read this book. This book is gripping. Even knowing the outcome, I was terrified at every moment of the story. Of all the events that I have experienced, witnessed, or simply heard about, this was the most baffling from the very start. The first time I saw the story of Amanda and Rafaela, I was certain they could not have been involved. I don't even remember all the reasons for my certainty, but it was the first thing I said. I had to read this book. I was certain there must have been some evidence or reasoning for the Italian court to believe these two very young people were in any way capable of this act. Now, I am left with no answers. Why do men need to feel so superior and allow such injustice for there own ego? My only prayer is for these two people to have long and prosperous lives in retribution for their mistreatment. And, perhaps, some good may come from it in the future of Italian justice. Or, is that too much to ask? Thank you Raffaella!

Riveting insight. A great read, I found His account to be detailed and interesting. Explaining more in-depth on particular details than Amanda Knox's book. Shocking, emotional but showing true character.

Heartfelt Joy for Your (and Amanda's) Acquittal. This book was born of truth. Many of your "observer's" believed in your innocence from the start. As the Mother of a son your age, I can say for certain while sometimes Mother's may not always be aware of a son's guilt in some things, they ALWAYS know of their innocence or guilt when it comes to the Truth. It is imbedded in our souls, as it is the souls of a Father. We know. As did your Father. You are the shining exemplary example of truth. May God forever be your source of comfort when lesser mortals trespass. Thank you for sharing your story. Blessed be your life!

Great. What these two young people went through is astounding. The vendetta waged against them by a supposedly sound justice system is nothing short of depressing. And yet the story continues with another trial to endure. I wish Rafaelle the best.

Honor Bound. Absolutely wonderful. Worth every penny!!

Disgusting and Pathetic. Raffaelle is only out of jail because he murdered Meredith with a rich American girl who the 🇺🇸 was dumb enough to believe. I suggest the book Meredith by John Kercher. He talks about the Kercher family's astonishment at Amanda Knox's and Rafaelle Sollecito's acquittal after 10k pages of evidence against Amanda Knox and Rafaelle Sollecito in trial 1. Alan Dersowitchz, a famous attorney has stated that in 50 years he has never seen a trial so one sidedly portrayed by the 🇺🇸 media. Americans were not privy to the evidence like Italians were - they all know she's guilty. Let's break down just some of the evidence against Amanda Knox & Rafaelle Sollecito- and this isn't all of it. 1) A staged break in-Whenever a break in is staged it is due to someone having a connection to the house trying to thwart their involvement - we often see this on Forensic Files. The window was broken from the inside not the outside and it was a huge rock, not even able to fit through the window that no one would be 100% impossible to throw through a 2 story window. Glass was found on top of items in a suspicious way, not all over and underneath. 2) Amanda's foot matched the footprint that was made in Meredith'a blood on the bathroom floor rug. 3) Amanda's blood was found in the bathroom sink on top of the faucet or something the morning of the murder. Her defense says she had a nosebleed. Bull. 4) Meredith's blood was found in the bathroom sink as well mixed with Amanda Knox's DNA. 5) Amanda's DNA was found on a kitchen knife with Meredith's DNA on the knife blade. This was retested at the appeal years later and they said it wasn't human DNA - rye bread or something. The knife had been bleached and I think the bleach combined with time erased the traces of Meredith's DNA over time. Also the knife wasn't found at the apartment - it was found at Amanda's boyfriend's apartment. Why would Meredith's kitchen knife be at his apartment anyway? 6)Amanda and Rafaelle turned their phones off all night for the first time the night of the murder all night. 7) Amanda falsely accused an innocent man of murdering her roommate when she was interrogated by police. She claims they beat her and that this was a coerced false confession. Well he was in jail for 2 weeks- Amanda had all that time to come out and say that he was really innocent. She would have let that man sit in prison for this had a university professor and many others not come forward saying he was with Lumumba at his restaurant. Amanda was sued for defamation by the interrogators for saying they hit her and coerced her. 8) A shop owner testified that Amanda Knox was waiting for him to open his store the morning after the murder and she went straight to get cleaning supplies and their is a receipt for bleach. The apartment had been bleached and cleaned of Amanda Knox's prints. 9) Amanda and Rafaelle had no alibi and they lied about the one they tried to pass off. 10) Rafaelle's DNA was found on Meredith's bra clasp. It was left at the crime seen for 40+ days or so, but still evidence is evidence and people can claim contamination but I don't. 11) Meredith's phones were thrown over a fence. A neighbor called to report the suspicious appearance of the phones in her yard and the postal police investigated- which led them to Meredith's apartment. Amanda and Rafaelle were outside at the time. After the postal police showed up Rafaelle called the Italian police. This would make it look to outsiders that Rafaelle reported the break in and then everyone showed up. Think about it-if the investigators show up to give Meredith her phones and she is dead-murdered then suspicion will go on the roommates who were at the crime scene. 11) Investigators confronted Rafaelle for calling police after the postal police arrived at which point Rafaelle signed a statement saying that he had been lying for amanda and that she left his house that night returning a few hours later. At this point it would suggest that when they told him that they knew about him calling the police after the postal police arrived that he turned on Amanda and tried to put the blame on her. Since they were wrongfully acquitted they are friends again. 12) The behavior of Amanda Knox and her boyfriend -whom she had only known for 4 days by the way - has come under suspicion and rightfully so. She and her boyfriend were making out outside the crime scene like two snake lovers in a crime spree. If you look up the Amanda Knox BBC documentary on YouTube, that infamous picture of Amanda on Rafaelle's arms looking at the crime scene investigators is the still shot used for the video and that picture screams guilt to me. You have to see the picture to understand. At the police station as a "witness" with Meredith's friends, Amanda was making out with her boyfriend, doing cartwheels & stretches - I think she was doing that in the lobby to make people think that the innocent girl doing cartwheels couldn't be the one who did this. She also made a comment to Meredith's friends: "Of course she suffered she had her F***ing throat cut." Meredith's friends informed investigators that Amanda was the exact opposite of Meredith. Meredith did send a text out to her sister before she died that she had a fight with Amanda. Amanda & Rafaelle were filmed kissing/buying lingerie the next day like a honeymoon. Young love. 13) Rudy Guede has said Amanda was there and that she killed Meredith after being confronted for stealing Meredith's rent money. Rudy was convicted in the killing as well. 14) Investigators determined that Meredith Kercher was killed by 3 people based on forensic evidence. I agree with the prosecutor - I think they killed without motive.

Excellent. This is an absolutely compelling and insightful story. I have to admit, that when this crime first happened, I assumed what I heard in the media was true, that Amanda and Raffaele were guilty of this crime. It wasn't until I saw an episode of 48 hours mystery, that I wondered if these two were not wrongfully convicted. After spending much time reading about this case from both sides, I am absolutely convinced that Raffaele and Amanda are innocent, innocent, innocent. The evidence that they were convicted on was absolutely ridiculous and that Mignini character needs to be disbarred, if they even do that in Italy. Amanda and Raffaele are so lucky to having loving families that never once turned their backs. We should all be so lucky. What I can't believe is that there are still people out there that think these two are guilty. The main evidence that convicted them was a huge joke. If you are at all on the fence about this case, you must read this book, as well as Amanda's plus the countless interviews on both sides. I hope Raffaele is able to create a new normal for himself, as I think he is a wonderful, honest and honorable human being. I also hope that one day the truth comes out about Meredith's murder. I believe it was all Guede and that he acted alone - but the Kercher family needs peace from the Italian courts, who choose to continue to drag the case on and on and on and on. The killer is in prison. Too bad the Italian courts see Meridith's life as not worth more than 16 years. That guy will be out in 10 years, and he'll murder someone else, for sure. One more mention. Raffaele recently did an interview with Katie Couric. She acted like the female version on Mignini in the interview and obviously has no clue about this case. Do your freaking homework before interviewing people, Couric. Your ignorance shows.

The other half of the story. I read two very balanced books about the Meredith Kercher murder after Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were acquitted by the appeals court in October of 2011, Candace Dempsey's Murder in Italy and an ABC News interative e-book called The Amanda Knox Story. Then a couple of weeks ago I read the electronic version of Amanda's memoir, Waiting to be Heard, after seeing clips of the impressive interview she did with Diane Sawyer on ABC. I found her book to be gripping, emotional, and a completely convincing account of her ordeal following her flatmate's murder. I had read the electronic sample of Raffaele's book just before, so I knew his was an equally balanced and detailed account. Raffaele's story mirrors Amanda's in many respects, but of course he witnessed the events from his own vantage point and had different experiences in prison. Also, he is Italian with local roots and with completely different family dynamics. He provides a surprising wealth of new details about the trial and even about the case itself. Toward the end he even provides his own reconstruction of how the murder and aftermath actually took place based on available evidence, which struck me as the most plausible scenario, one that I haven't seen spelled out in such detail elsewhere. His abiding affection for, and loyalty to, Amanda is evident throughout, even when her stress-induced actions did not help their situation. That they were both completely innocent is perfectly obvious to anyone who has reviewed the facts of the case. The appeals court threw out all the spurious theories and tainted physical "evidence" conjured up by the local police and procecutor Mignini, leaving exactly no evidence against either Raffaele or Amanda. That another court wants to try them again is incomprehensible - on what basis could they possibly reopen the case (not even considering the concept of double jeopardy)? For a complete account of this incredible and tragic episode, reading both Honor Bound and Waiting to be Heard is the ideal. I highly recommend both memoirs.

Honor Bound. Awesome book thank you Rafaelle and Amanda for sharing you story with us , luckily with a happy ending for both of you !!xoxo

Insightful. Thank you for sharing your story. I am now anxious to read Amanda's book (I hope she writes one). This was an eye opener for me about the Italian justice system. This book is about complex relationships, love, lust, and deception. I had to keep reminding myself as I read that this is a true story because some pages are absolutely unreal, jaw dropping - like something out of a movie. Stay strong Raffaele!

Excellent book. Many lessons we all have to learn while reading this book, most of all when visiting other countries. The truth will always prevail!

Good. Thought it was well written.

Honor bound. This story had me spellbound and could not believe that the Italian justices would be so corrupted. I am glad to be Canadian where justice prevails. I have read waiting to be heard and I am so sorry for all the pain and sufferings of two kids that had to go throug such an ordeal and be marked for life because they believed that the law and police would do everything to help them and instead used them as a way to get on the word wide map. So sad. I truly believe that you both had nothing to do with this horrible scenario portrayed by the Peruga police dept. I wish you a wonderful life and happy memories from the time you were freed.
