Excerpt: Just as my thoughts started to circle back around to my own death, I heard something off in the distance, probably a quarter mile down the shaft. I had no time to feel like an idiot, because by now, full-blown panic set in, and I was going to do whatever it took to get noticed. Finally, after what seemed like forever, the darkness was pierced by two unearthly eyes. The beast was immense. Under any normal circumstance, I would have tried to run like hell in the other direction, but this was obviously no normal circumstance. Anyway, I couldn’t see five feet in front of me, so if this beast was about to kill me, there was no way I was going to escape. That’s when the damndest thing I’ve ever experienced took place. This enormous wolf, his coat an inky black tipped with silver, came up to me and nipped at my boot, then the waist of my pants, and lowered his head. “Oh, my God,” I said, slack-jawed and staring. “Does this thing want me to ride it?” The wolf whined and nudged me again. I realized that it understood me. That, somehow, was stranger to me than all the rest.
