Heads in Beds by Jacob Tomsky Book Summary

In the tradition of Kitchen Confidential and Waiter Rant, a rollicking, eye-opening, fantastically indiscreet memoir of a life spent (and misspent) in the hotel industry.

“Highly amusing."—New York Times

Jacob Tomsky never intended to go into the hotel business. As a new college graduate, armed only with a philosophy degree and a singular lack of career direction, he became a valet parker for a large luxury hotel in New Orleans. Yet, rising fast through the ranks, he ended up working in “hospitality” for more than a decade, doing everything from supervising the housekeeping department to manning the front desk at an upscale Manhattan hotel. He’s checked you in, checked you out, separated your white panties from the white bed sheets, parked your car, tasted your room-service meals, cleaned your toilet, denied you a late checkout, given you a wake-up call, eaten M&Ms out of your minibar, laughed at your jokes, and taken your money. In Heads in Beds he pulls back the curtain to expose the crazy and compelling reality of a multi-billion-dollar industry we think we know.

Heads in Beds is a funny, authentic, and irreverent chronicle of the highs and lows of hotel life, told by a keenly observant insider who’s seen it all. Prepare to be amused, shocked, and amazed as he spills the unwritten code of the bellhops, the antics that go on in the valet parking garage, the housekeeping department’s dirty little secrets—not to mention the shameless activities of the guests, who are rarely on their best behavior. Prepare to be moved, too, by his candor about what it’s like to toil in a highly demanding service industry at the luxury level, where people expect to get what they pay for (and often a whole lot more). Employees are poorly paid and frequently abused by coworkers and guests alike, and maintaining a semblance of sanity is a daily challenge.

Along his journey Tomsky also reveals the secrets of the industry, offering easy ways to get what you need from your hotel without any hassle. This book (and a timely proffered twenty-dollar bill) will help you score late checkouts and upgrades, get free stuff galore, and make that pay-per-view charge magically disappear. Thanks to him you’ll know how to get the very best service from any business that makes its money from putting heads in beds. Or, at the very least, you will keep the bellmen from taking your luggage into the camera-free back office and bashing it against the wall repeatedly.

Very true! Very good!. This is a great book written by a very good friend who is also a darn good novelist, and that is why this reads so well. EVERYTHING about "The Bellevue" is true. I have been in the hospitality business for a long time, and all I can say is thank you Jake. Front desk for life! "Dante"

Thank you. If you've ever worked in the Hotel Industry then you know why we truly appreciate this book. I have already told multiple hotel professionals to read this book. A great read.

A good tell all of the hotel industry. Everything you probably already knew but didn't want to believe and MANY things you didn't and don't want to know.

Very relatable for a hospitality veteran like myself. I loved every page and chapter of it. I've found this to be funny, real and helpful at the same time

Heads in Beds. Terrible read, terrible (as lowlife jerk) author/worker, and depressing to learn so many hotel guests are lowlife, near-criminal fools.

Heads in beds. Hilariously scary! Brutally honest. I laughed out loud, while cringing, of course. A must read.

Great Job, Jacob, If I May Call You By Your Name!. As a fellow author (I write spell-binding textbooks and design exciting educational materials--not that you care, of course) congratulations! I love your book. Heads in Beds has entertained and distracted me through a nasty bout of shingles. As you rudely insist, I will spare you the details. You may however, be delighted to know that now that I am back on my feet and will be a "head in a bed"again soon, I can't wait to throw money at anyone in a hotel lobby wearing anything vaguely resembling a uniform, with or without a name tag. I'll drop your name in case they want to give you a kickback. I may also title my next book Butts in Desks. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Ms. Thinkalot, Rhode Island

The underbelly of hotels is over-hyped and over-priced. I purchased this book because it was aligned with reading ‘Waiters Rant’ which I loved. That was a light-hearted, informative fun read. This book reveals the nasty side of the hotel industry and is vulgar throughout. I have to question if all hotels are as described. Save your money. Even on sale, this book was disgusting and a huge disappointment.

Heads in Beds. Fantastic book. Well done Thomas!

Must Read!!. Great entertaining and enlightening book about the hotel industry. A must read for any business traveler!!

Heads in Beds. I never want to stay in another hotel room as long as I live!!....especially if the personnel therein are as nasty, cynical and vile as this author. He strips away every ounce of decency the public naively expects from the "hospitality" industry and dishes up an imagery of ruthless opportunists at your beck and call from the moment you valet park. You want anything from these uniformed thugs? Just have those "twenties" ready to peel off! This book makes me physically sick....and wouldn't you know it?...I write this while sitting in the lobby cafe of the Marriott Sky City, Hong Kong. My only prayer is that these Chinese have yet to become so westernized that they actually continue to find pride and (can it be?) joy in the simple integrity of doing their job. What a completely horrible book!!! Patty Ellis World Traveler

Yeah, it's good. As a front desk employee for years, I can say this is pretty accurate. Anybody who has worked in a hotel will find this book charming and entertaining.

Fun and sadly true. 25 years in the hotel industry and I can attest to the truthiness of Mr. Tomsky's story. It is a tough business often made tougher by the individuals that hotel workers have to placate. It does however provide for great memories, amazing perks, and just enough entertainment to keep us in the business instead of running to an office for cover. I felt for this catcher in the rye while reading the transformation of a sweet kid into a street kid. I came to NYC to be an actress...sigh.

Accurate. This is an accurate representation of life in the hospitality industry. After spending 6 years in a luxury hotel myself I really enjoyed this book. A great read for someone who has worked in the industry!

An unshelved read. A fantastic read, a must for any traveler who values insight and education about the other side working (or working for) you. I couldn't put it down and I've put down more than my fair share of books. All of the sudden, I realize the intended effect as I feel like tipping every service professional I come across. Perhaps I should commission a book on tipping your remodel professional. Well done.

Heads in Beds a winner!. Just finished Heads in Beds. Having stayed in many different kinds of hotels over the last 20 years, I found this book quite informative about how to address the front end agents. But do I have the nerve to give that upfront tip that supposedly will get me more than I am already paying for? Yeah, NO! But I will never again NOT use a bellman's services even if all I am carrying is a large purse. I totally enjoyed this book. Felt like I was reading about the Anthony Bourdain of the hotel world. The tone of the book reminded me of Kitchen Confidential. Got a little uncomfortable reading about those scuzzy sheets but thankfully it was just a small part. Would love to read Heads in Beds II if it ever becomes a reality.

Very entertaining and educational. A very interesting and a rather fun read. I would have given it 3 1/2 stars if it allowed for all the incessant swearing. I get that that's the New York hotel worker's vernacular -but a little goes a long way. He's a funny, talented writer but the profanity every third word takes away from the book. Thanks for the great advice, though!

Very Entertaining!. Very entertaining story! I could not put this book down!

Tepid. I'm sorry I spent the 12.99

entertaning but not earth shattering. While no "kitchen confidential", it does have some interesting insites to hotel operations and celebrity encounters. Mostly it is a rant about management and the bad manners of customers. What the author does not seem to realize is that all cutomer service jobs come these problems; try working in medical billing where everyone insists that they get their bill reduced because they picked a cheap plan that does not pay enough..like it is the dr.s fault. Maybe book two should be a lesson on manners and lets put a stop to all customer service abuse! I would encourage the author not to change carreers at this point, it's the same issues, different subject, my advice to him? Try more empathy, you might enjoy your job better.

Kept my interest throughout!. Extremely entertaining, even though it seems real as…

Evoked my heretofore unknown hospitality industry PSTD.. Having climbed the back-door ladder of the hotel industry since I gave up my paper route, I can vividly recount near identical incidents in my own life as a key jockey. From the time a bellman spun a quarter tip through the glass of a guest's lake-view window, the fluttering cascade of 3-ring binders thrown down the four-story lobby waterfall by a salesman's wife, the time a guest left her infant son with us to "just keep an eye on him while I have a drink with my friends", or the guest who claimed her husband was going to do himself in by eating thirty packets of "pop rocks". (We put them in the hotel safe for her) Jacob Tomsky deserves the "golden nametag" for having the ability to recount these types of incidents without his eyes rolling back in his head and frothing at the corners of his mouth. Some of us have escaped, wounded, worn or wasted, but no matter how long we have been away, try calling our phones at 3am and see if we don't answer "Thank you for calling the front desk,,this is... "

Thoroughly enjoyable. Read this book over the last 24 hours. Entertaining writing. If you have ever worked in the service industry and enjoy clever humor, this is definitely worth a read.

Tomsky Strips the Paint.... ... from the luxury hotel experience, exposes the rats, and takes out the garbage. Mostly. This is a great read for the grab-bag of practical hotel tips and the drama of the author's history behind the front desk. If you've ever felt paranoid about what the hotel staff was doing in your room while you were away... this book might fill in some of the blanks for you.

Entertaining. As a frequent traveler, much of "Heads in Beds" makes sense. Safe, clean and consistent are my three top priorities in a hotel...a nice fitness center, good room service, and free parking come next. Overall, an entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the hotel industry.

Great read!. Having spent my entire career in the the hospitality industry it was refreshing to read. I feel fortunate to be one that has. But I will always treat the hospitality angels with great respect. Know I know better how to.

Heads in Beds. Do not read this book on an airplane! Your constant laughing, punctuated with explosive bursts of mirth, will irritate your fellow passengers. This is a great lesson in practical living for those of us blessed with careers that require frequent travel - delivered in a crisp, staccato style that has New Yahk all over it. Well DONE!

Awesome book for every traveller. I loved this book and it put a lot of perspective on my travels. It does have some profanity, but if it offends you, then you must be one of those terrible guests written in the book. Which means get a new tooth brush now!!! While I don't think I have ever been a terrible guest, I will be a great guest from now on. Thank "Thomas" for that.

Heads in Beds. I actually really enjoyed this book. I heard about it on National Public Radio and as a person who travels frequently, I thought I would get some interesting insights into the minds of people in the hotels. I never realized how much power the front desk person has in making decisions on your behalf. I think I am going to wrap a $20 bill around my credit card everywhere I go from now on and kindly ask for the appropriate upgrades.

Very informative and entertaining. Quick read, over a weekend. Lots of good information on how to make sure you get the best room and service.... Yes, by tipping but this book tells you exactly how to tip to get exactly what you want. Moreover, the book was also a fun read due to multiple hilarious stories of guests and their antics. Well, guests and employees stories. You won't be disappointed with this lite read.

Like then annoyed. I bought this book for them inside information on the hotel industry. Though the authors experiences may all be accurate, in my case the book does a disservice to those in the industry. By the time I got 2/3 finished with the book I had no interest in finding out anything more about these people. He has turned my opinion of hotel staff to zero.

Attitude is Everything. The best thing to be said about "Heads in Beds" is, as Tomsky's funny and all too common story of the working class getting screwed unfolded, I cared less and less about the hotel tips. This book is funny, above all, and Tomsky has a talent for creating a vivid character with a single line. If I'm ever in any of the hotels he describes and they aren't as I pictured them, I will be disappointed. Very fun book.

Amusing. I really liked the whit in the storytelling & the educational truths that I can pocket.

Fun to read. My husband always does the $20 trick at hotels, and we love being surprised with what we can get with that tip. This book is so funny and real about how hotels are - I loved reading it from his viewpoint!

Loved this. I loved this book. Def will pay more attention to service in hotels, and to show appreciation where appropriate. Thank you!

Heads in Beds. Revelatory, honest, and if you don't change your behavior towards desk clerks by the time you finish the book then there's no hope for you and you'll deserve every bad room and all the other retaliations the author relates with the amusement of George Orwell in Down and Out in Paris and London describing the waiter at the restaurant of the grand hotel routinely spitting in the soup.

Great Story!. This was very entertaining and informative. I bought a copy for my friend who owed a hotel in England and is negotiating for another one in Scotland.

Heads in beds. Excellent read couldn't put it down!

Fantastic. The best! I don't miss checking in and out week in and week out. This book I wish existed when I was out there though. I had my share of bad travel days and rarely came across a hotel employee that was not willing to take care of me. Now I know how better to take care of those that always have our backs! Really this should be required reading prior to checking in. Please write more, you have a great gift.

Heads in Beds. i guess i will know what to do and what not to do at a hotel in future-sheesh

Fun Read. Great book for anyone that has ever stayed in a hotel.

Good Read!. Entertainingly written and full of insight and "tips." Would recommend to anyone who frequents hotels and doesn't take themselves too seriously :)

Witty and entertaining!. Funny, informative and well written. I highly recommend this book to anyone who travels.

Great read!. This book was picked for a book club that I am in. It is one of the funniest books that I have read in my life. I rate it as highly as possible. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Maybe everyone won't like it, but as a person who works in the service industry, I could relate, and couldn't put it down. Hopefully Jacob Tomsky will continue writing, and someone smart will turn Heads in Beds into a movie.

Pretty good and has a few tips.. However after reading the synopsis, I'd expected a bit more in the way of how to upgrade my hotel experience. I learned a few things, thanks.

Read it!. As a bellman, I can say this is true...cover to cover. Well written and truly funny, it is a quick and educational read. Buy this book. Also, use the bellman.

Heads in beds. How to play the hotel game if you are a guest, and scary things that I am sure I did not want to know about the hotel industry. That being said, I want to stay in Thomas Jacobs hotel and be taken care of my him. As a veteran traveler, I just want efficiency and that bottle of wine at the end of the day. This book has taught me that I am not tipping enough. Thanks for the insight.

Good beach read but. I enjoyed the book. I like to travel an I've read several of these insider type books. It made me a little sad, though. Travel is exciting for me, yet I get the impression from the book that front desk agents feel contempt for most guests, particularly those who can't drop a twenty on them. I'm not a person who can normally afford a Ritz Carlton, but I once got a good deal on Travelocity, so I thought I'd splurge. It was still a lot of money for me My hotel room was really bad--noisy, really moldy, seemed to be missing furniture and no hot water. I suspected it was because I had a Travelocity reservation, and this book confirmed that indeed this might have been the case.

Heads in Beds. Enjoyed the book. Especially got a lot out of the tips to make your stays more enjoyable. Never knew that a simple expression of thanks could pay off so well.

Can't wait to check in to a hotel again after reading this!. Laughed through the whole thing, fell in love with Tomsky, who is equal parts tough, hilarious, vulnerable, and sweet.
