Jaws by Peter Benchley Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The shark-versus-man classic that inspired the blockbuster Steven Spielberg movie—now in a fiftieth anniversary edition with an exclusive foreword from the author’s wife, renowned ocean conservation advocate Wendy Benchley

“A tightly written, tautly paced study of terror.”—The Washington Post

A great white shark terrorizes the beautiful summer getaway of Amity Island, and a motley group of men take to the water to do battle with the beast. A heart-pounding novel of suspense and a brilliant meditation on the nature of humanity, Jaws is one of the most iconic thrillers ever written.

In addition to Wendy Benchley’s foreword, this edition features bonus content from Peter Benchley’s archives, including the manuscript’s original typed title page, a brainstorming list of possible titles, a letter from Benchley to film producer David Brown with candid feedback on the movie adaptation, and excerpts from Benchley’s book Shark Trouble, highlighting his firsthand account of writing Jaws, selling it to Universal Studios, and working with Steven Spielberg.

After writing Jaws in the early 1970s, Peter Benchley was actively engaged with scientists and filmmakers, and over the ensuing decades, joined many expeditions around the world as they expanded their knowledge of sharks and shark behavior. He encouraged each new generation of Jaws fans to enjoy his riveting tale and to channel their excitement into support and protection of these magnificent prehistoric apex predators.

Dun dun. I'm gonna eat that hairy leg...

Jaws book vs movie. The novel Jaws is significantly different than the Academy Award winning movie. Although the author is also credited with the screenplay along with Carl Gottlieb, there are stark differences that I think make the movie a much better story.

Jaws. Still holds up as an exciting read and actually will encourage to learn about sharks and the need for their conservation

Disappointed. The Steven Spielberg is unforgettable. Roy Schneider's performance was unforgettable. Richard Dreyfuss' performance was unforgettable. Robert Shaw's performance was unforgettable. Peter Benchley's novel was also unforgettable because of how much of a let down I felt. It was too short, poorly written, and had no character development for anyone but Brody. I felt that the ending was pitiful and that the author just wanted to get it over with and slap the first thing he thought of on there. Disappointed greatly.

Jaws. I already knew some details about the book that was not included in the film. Of course, film will differ from the book due to many factors. The main reason is the driver or the person in command in each medium of said story. The director of the film and the author of the book. Although the film takes another course from the book, reasons that were made not by choice. As in less shark and more suspense, this made for a better movie. In fact, it was one of many “not by choice” and “had to resort to” ways to film the movie which made it into a success and the first to be coined a “Blockbuster” summer hit. Those were the technical difficulties, to put it mildly, with the more important being turned down by the actors of choice or producers turning down actors of choice. So, we, meaning fans or the audience were the lucky ones to be rewarded with the cast as we know it today. Robert Shaw as Quint Roy Scheider as Chief Brody Richard Dreyfuss as Hooper Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody Murray Hamilton as the Mayor Larry Vaughn The one thing that stands out in the film and not in the book is Quints story of the real-life event of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during WWII. Director Steven Spielberg and other crew members agreed how finally this had become a movie. This, after exceeding the schedule to film and the cost to produce it. Why am I not giving examples from the movie itself except for Quints speech? You will be satisfied after watching Jaws. How much is to each individual. You will fear the water and sharks afterwards. You will not complain to the number of times the shark is in view during the film. It goes back to the saying “less is more” and believe you me any more and some of us may not finish watching it. Any less might even have the same effect. Remember, this is my opinion. Jaws is one of the finest movies in the history of American film making. Steve. Spielberg is a genius who stuck to his guns on his vision towards filming in open water where others would not do so. Compared to all of his movies this is his best one. First, remove the films you say are better if they are about true accounts. Next, remove the films that are not as plausible when comparing a shark versus other animals gone wild. He took the challenge of making a film in the Atlantic Ocean about a shark terrorizing a small town by using technology not yet in existence in Hollywood to scare the audience. Nothing was going as planned. Over budget in cost and deadline to film almost made him give up. It was a nightmare and which the shark terrorized only him and crew. I have to include the editing because that plays important, very important, to this movie. Verna Fields won an Oscar for film editing Jaws. Such a brilliant editor as she was also nominated for American Graffiti and Paper Moon. The book is a superb one from author Peter Benchley. Because of his knowledge of sharks no other book, fact or fiction, has had more success than Jaws. The book and film are great in their own right but yet are almost two stories separately. Which leads me to not say the movie is better than the book. I purchased the film many years ago and this book very recently. And you may want to buy both and you may not be disappointed.

Good, fast read.... I decided to read the book because I have always LOVED this movie!! I always enjoy reading books that have been developed into movies to pick out the differences... That is all I enjoyed with this book. The writing is good... The story is good... BUT the ending is felt rushed. It felt like Peter Benchley needed to finish this book up quickly and did it with an unenthusiastic ending. Quite frankly, Steven Speilberg did a better job wrapping this story up!!! I have never been able to say that about ANY book that was made into a movie... The book has always been better except in this case. Skip reading this book as you will be disappointed at the end and see reading it was a waste of your time.

Jaws. Dun dun... Dun dun......

Jaws. I first read this book in sixth grade, just before the movie was released. I purchased the iBook version as I watched Shark Week shows on Directv. The suspense and descriptions of the shark attacks holds up and maintains the reader's interest. What I had forgotten (or possibly the mind of a 10 year old blocked it out) was the relationship between Hooper and Mrs. Brody. All that aside, I read the iBook version in three days, maybe one more day than it took me to read when I was a youngster. Read this book... at the shore if possible. I make my kids watch the movie every time it is on.

Greatest. Summer. Read. Ever. The movie was one of the greatest ever made and set the canon for generations... But the book...you need to read it. It's so well written and it's the perfect read for any adult's summer reading list. Must read.

Issue.... The main reason I am giving this book a two star review is because of the affair scene. It served no purpose and had no relevance to the story. All it did was mess with the pacing of the story. The whole issue of the affair was unnecessary because it did not add anything to help progress the main plot line. The story would remain the same without it.

Book v Movie = Movie (hands down). When a movie turns out better than the book, you know something's wrong. Isn't supposed to be the other way around? It felt like a cash grab ending. Who really cares about the characters anyway. Peter got paid for a great theme, plain and simple. Sad was the fact that so much character wise was left on the table. What if it had been a frightened Ellen screeching to a halt at the dock. Her last chance to set things right before her true love is gone. Nope, just some stupid, of little interest, reporter, please. I would have rather read white space. It gets 2 stars only in the fact that I was pushed to its conclusion, as sad as it was. You know it's bad when the script writer and director toss out 75% of the book, keeping only the good parts, a BIG shark and the characters names. This will forever be journaled as my saddest read of a book that could have been.

Jaws. Jaws

Dated, but that’s to be expected. Still a thrilling read.

Won't download properly. I'm halfway through the book and am enjoying it quite a bit. Unfortately, I've had to redownload it twice due to the ends of chapters being left off. After redownloading, the chapter ends have appeared. Please fix this.

This book is terrible..... I am so happy the movie took the liberties it did with the story because the book has almost zero likable characters and how it became so popular is a mystery....

Hmm. Well I loved the movie and what I can actually read of the book...but seems there is a glitch the last two pages of every chapter are the same...think I would like it a lot more if I could actually read the entire story

Jaws. Great book.

Smile you son of a shark. Better than the movie . More deaths . Affairs . Hopper as the bad guy. And the shark being the shark .

JAWS. AMAZING

What the heck..... This book is the worst! It's like oh when kids read this they emailed me and asked how they can save these amazing creatures....whatever! No child should ever have to suffer their eyes when there's a mom behind her kids back and husbands....has sex with someone else! It's a terrible book, full if swearing, the movie was great the book is terrible. I got to like chap 30 and stopped after tht terrible person did the thing! It disgusts me and us not a kid book. And also it's like the book from the sharks point if view...?!?!?! Not! The shark comes, eats, then leaves while women go a adulterous. I would never get this book or pay money to do anything by right reviews to flush it down the toilet.

Movie is better. While the book does add a lot of details & layers to the story, it is in itself a very different story from the movie. It was a good read but when compared to the movie (which I love) it does not hold up to same level of greatness.

Excellent. I’ve been a Jaws fan for as long as I can remember. Must have watched the movies hundreds of times over the years. Decided to read the book and was very pleased. There are a lot of differences from the movie which made it very interesting for me. The characters are great, the writing is excellent. I highly recommend.
