Asylum by Madeleine Roux Book Summary

Madeleine Roux's New York Times bestselling Asylum is a thrilling and creepy photo-illustrated novel that Publishers Weekly called "a strong YA debut that reveals the enduring impact of buried trauma on a place."

For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, the New Hampshire College Prep program is the chance of a lifetime. Except that when Dan arrives, he finds that the usual summer housing has been closed, forcing students to stay in the crumbling Brookline Dorm. The dorm was formerly a sanatorium, more commonly known as an asylum. And not just any asylum—a last resort for the criminally insane.

As Dan and his new friends Abby and Jordan start exploring Brookline's twisty halls and hidden basement, they uncover disturbing secrets about what really went on at Brookline . . . secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum's dark past. Because Brookline was no ordinary asylum, and there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried.

Featuring found photographs from real asylums and filled with chilling mystery and page-turning suspense, Asylum is a horror story that treads the line between genius and insanity, perfect for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Amazing. Definitely interesting to read. Easily relatable and can easily capture one's attention.

This book is impeccable. I literally just finished this book in a day it's so creative i love

MK ULTRA. Does anyone else think this could be a story about MK ULTRA. For those of you that don’t know MK ULTRA was an experiment that the U.S. government did that they attempted to mind control on innocent men and women at hospitals, colleges, pharmacies, and multiple prisons. They used many different methods as in different torture methods, mental/phisical/and sexual abuse. By the way I love this book, it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Great book. Wow, if you like a good horror story, this book is the way to go. I would also recommend Sanctum, the sequel.

AMAZING. i read this book so quick because i could not put it down . i normally don't like reading but this book is so good . it's the perfect amount of creepy

Disappointing.. In this world of technology, I would have thought that the clearly PhotoShopped pictures printed in this book would have been of slightly higher quality, unless of course, the joke is on me! Asylum, to this reader, was mediocre in all aspects: writing, plotline, and graphics. Disappointing, actually, as it could have been a fantastic book, leaving this reader hoping the next installment grows into its full potential.

Asylum. It is very riveting and very exciting also I can't wait to read her sequel to this book sanctum it comes out August 26th 2014. I can't wait!

I have this book in real life. This is an amazing book. Saving money to get the next two books at barns and noble.

Enchanted Book Nook Review. My Review: Dan Crawford is a 16 year old boy is attending the New Hampshire College Prep summer program. Although for Dan, it's a little more than just that. At his high school, Dan is an outcast, and he's hoping that this summer, being in a brand new place, will allow for him to make friends before he starts college. However, when he arrives on campus, Dan learns that the dorms he is being housed in all summer used to be an old asylum. A last resort for the criminally insane, a place where bad things happened. As Dan and his new friends, Abby and Jordan explore the hidden parts of the dorms, they will soon discover that it's no coincidence all 3 of them ended up there, for the asylum holds a key to a very terrifying past. WOW! I loved this book! I had a very hard time putting it down! For me, it was a total page turner, and I just had to see what was coming next. I live maybe 30 miles from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, and have always let my mind wonder about the place. So this definitely up my alley. It has ghosts, mystery, a touch of romance, and old hidden secrets. This is one of the best books to set up for a spooky feeling or a great read for Halloween. The book moved at a great pace, not too fast nor too slow. There was just enough air of mystery to keep me turning the pages, and enough romance, that it didn't overpower the rest of the story. Of course, I loved the photos throughout the book, if anything, there could of been more (again I'm just drawn to that stuff because of TALA). I think I finished this within a week, and went of over the weekend and got the 2nd book. I'm very excited to see where these characters are now, how they have changed (if any) from their time spent at Brookline, and what other terrors await them. I only had one problem with the book: How exactly did Jordan fit into the secrets of Brookline? The way the jacket read, Abby, Dan, and Jordan were tied in someway by the asylum, but unless I overlooked this, there was no explanation. With that being said, the book took a turn I never saw coming, and it ended in a way I would have ever expected. I just wished the book would've talked a little bit more with the aftermath of Felix, and and dug a little deeper into Dan's family history. But, hopefully the next book will fill in a little bit of those gaps. Now, there are a lot of negative reviews for this book out there. Which is totally cool, everyone is entitled to their opinions. However, a lot of them state this book is great for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which some readers feel it is not. I have to agree, I've read the book, but actually didn't care for it, so maybe that's where the problem comes from. The only similarity is the old pictures. But regardless if you are a fan of Miss Peregrine or not, this shouldn't be compared, the only way to decide is to read! Positive Elements: Despite some of Dan's "issues" he makes quick friends with both Abby and Jordan. Dan has had a pretty tough life, but he loves the family who adopted him and he wouldn't trade them for the world. Negative Elements: There are swear words throughout this book. Of course, Dan, Abby, and Jordan sneaking into the old office. Jordan did some underage drinking for a page or so, because he got upset with Dan and Abby. Naked girls and boys are mentioned as being in Abby's drawing class. Spiritual Elements: Ghosts are brought up a lot, with being in an old asylum and all. God's name is misused several times, and Jordan mentioned praying to many gods. Dan suspects a pastor of a heinous crime. Other Thoughts: Let's not forget the fact that the author references Doctor Who! I was so pleased with this book, and I can't wait to being reading the second!

Very interesting. Really awesome book. It will definitely draw you in. I like how it ended, there are just some questions left unanswered and I hope they are answered in the second book. Be careful there are a few moments that scare you to the point that you have to keep the lights on! :)

Asylum. A page-turner. Couldn't put it down; wanted to know what would happen next. Recommend this, especially if you like "Mrs. Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children".

Okay. This book was okay. Written on the reading level of a fourth grader with somewhat one dimensional characters, probably meant for a younger audience. Cool pics, though. Not sorry I read it, however, and will probably read the rest of the books in this series at some point as it is very fast reading and mildly entertaining...

Awesome. I read this book in 2 1/2 days one, great story that will catch your attention as soon as you start reading it, I totally recommend this book.

An Amazing Read. At first, I was skeptical to read this story, but after the first few chapters, I was hooked. It was not so much the fear factor that got me hooked, it was the unknown certainty. A great read for those who love a very interesting and macabre story!

Asylum…one of the best. Absolutely amazing! The whole book was so engaging and I found myself reading it literally all day! I could not put it down! The plot was twisting and brilliant and the characters extremely likable. The creepiness was perfect and the cliffhangers superb! Everything you need in a book!

Good Teen Mystery. I bought this book on a whim. I needed a quick free reading book for class and I was very happy! It’s a good book and combines mystery with teen drama very well.

INTENSE AND FUN. If you love a mystery and a story that doesn’t make sense at first but then takes an unexpected turn that suddenly brings realization to your head then I would read this! It’s really fun and intense, but if you get scared easily, or hate horror or scary things then I wouldn’t read it since it has those categories in it. Overall I’m a person with very high expectations when it comes to books and this one went past my expectations which suprise me but I loved it since it’s been awhile since I’ve read a book that wouldn’t make me sleep. If you’ve read Miss Peregrines Home got Peculiar Children and liked that book I would read this one because it’s similar.

Edge Of Your Seat Read. I cannot begin to express just how much I loved reading this book. I wasn't even halfway through it and I had already purchased the second book in this series. This is truly a creepy read as it blends young adults, an old and abandoned asylum with portions of it turned into dorm rooms, vintage pictures and of course an eerily paranormal factor. Edge of your seat, spine tingling read that pulls you in right from the very beginning and overwhelms your senses with a strong storyline, well developed characters and the world building was fantastic. I can't wait to start reading the second book as I must say that I was completely impressed by the author's skill at storytelling and the goosebumps I got while reading this book.

Keeps you wanting more. Loved it!

Amazing. One of the best books I ever read
