The Agency 1: A Spy In the House by Y. S. Lee Book Summary

Introducing an exciting new series! Steeped in Victorian atmosphere and intrigue, this diverting mystery trails a feisty heroine as she takes on a precarious secret assignment. Rescued from the gallows in 1850s London, young orphan (and thief) Mary Quinn is surprised to be offered a singular education, instruction in fine manners — and an unusual vocation. Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls is a cover for an all-female investigative unit called The Agency, and at seventeen, Mary is about to put her training to the test. Assuming the guise of a lady’s companion, she must infiltrate a rich merchant’s home in hopes of tracing his missing cargo ships. But the household is full of dangerous deceptions, and there is no one to trust — or is there? Packed with action and suspense, banter and romance, and evoking the gritty backstreets of Victorian London, this breezy mystery debuts a daring young detective who lives by her wits while uncovering secrets — including those of her own past.

Great Book!. Great Book! Full of mystery (duh), suspense, bits of romance, and hidden identities. The characters are well developed and all have satisfying endings. I highly recommend!

Really Good Book. Loved it. Even used it for a book report!

Loved it!. This book was SO good, I would highly recommend it! I didn't think it was overly predictable and didn't see many of the plot twists coming. I also liked that there was a bit of romance, but that wasn't the central point. I can't wait to read the next book!

Good series for fans of the Sally Lockhart Quartet. Fifteen years ago, I was introduced to the works of Phillip Pullman and his Sally Lockhart series, a Victorian noir-historical mystery series, led by a quiet-spoken, independent young woman, with a rich, diverse cast of charming characters and merciless cutthroats, and plenty of twists, secrets, and violence to keep readers in suspense. Recently, I discovered Y.S. Lee's The Agency, and highly recommend considering this series. While there are some similarities (I.e. young woman becoming involved in a over-arching series of mystery in Victorian England), this series has so far focused more on the London daily life, as Mary Quinn works undercover on behalf of the Agency, a formidable investigative unit working out of a girls' academy and home. The series appears to be well-researched, and is highly enjoyable. While it is geared toward teens 14 and up, and young adults, adults will alsolikely find the series worth reading. Good diction, and attentive to historical details, without overwhelming readers all at once. Just keep reading through the first few chapters, and you'll be hooked. Although, the second novel is even better overall, you would still need to read this one first for background, and continuing minor story lines.

Well written. This is a great book. It is well written and explains all the odds and ends in a mystery.

So good 😊. SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!😁❤️😍
