Le Languedoc vivait heureux, en ces premières années du XIIIe siècle. Du Lauraguais jusqu'au Rhöne, dans les belles et opulentes cités de Toulouse, de Carcassonne, de Narbonne, de Béziers, de Montpellier, d'Albi, dans les châteaux où fleurissaient les cours d'amour, régnaient un air de légèreté et de liberté, un bonheur de vivre qui contrastaient avec la rudesse des pays du nord de la Loire - la France de Philippe Auguste et de ces grands barons qui ne rêvaient que batailles et conquêtes. C'est de là, précisément, que, dans l'été de l'année 1209, déferla le malheur : l'armée innombrable des croisés que le pape Innocent III lançait sur le Midi pour en extirper l'hérésie cathare. Du massacre de Béziers au bûcher de Montségur, le calvaire du Languedoc allait durer trente-cinq ans.
C'est cette grande et terrible histoire, jamais effacée, que Michel Peyramaure a entrepris de nous conter. Tous les personnages sont là : Raymond VI de Toulouse, le vicomte Trencavel, le légat Pierre de Castelnau, Dominique de Guzman, l'abbé Arnaud-Amaury Simon de Montfort, et " les croyants " et " les bonshommes ", les seigneurs occitans et les chevaliers français, et les pèlerins et les ribauds, en foule. Célèbres ou inconnus, historiques ou non, ils animent cette vaste fresque de leurs passions, de leurs amours et de leur foi.
