In den vergangenen Jahren hat die Verbreitung von Mikrofinanzprogrammen stark zugenommen. Wo für das Jahr 2000 noch rund 13,8 Mio. Teilnehmer entsprechender Programmen gemeldet waren, hat sich diese Zahl bis ins Jahr 2007 auf ca. 92,9 Mio. Kunden vervielfacht. Ebenso hat sich die Anzahl der erfassten Mikrofinanzunternehmen im gleichen Zeitraum von 1567 auf 3316 Institutionen gesteigert. Solche Angaben deuten darauf hin, dass Mikrofinanzprodukte für die Anbieter ein lohnendes Geschäft sind. Diese Arbeit möchte untersuchen, ob auch die Kunden solcher Produkte profitieren und darüber hinaus mit Mikrofinanz Beiträge zur Entwicklung sowie Armutsbekämpfung rückständiger Länder geleistet werden.
