Woodrow Wilson by Peter H. Buckingham Book Summary

Materials dealing with Woodrow Wilson’s life, early years, academic career, family, health, gubernatorial term, and postpresidential years comprise this chapter. Strictly separating Wilson’s life from his presidency is an impossible and rather arbitrary task; therefore, readers should also consult Chapter 2 for materials that concentrate on his actions and policies as president.

A number of excellent overviews of Wilson’s life have been written. See David D. Anderson, Woodrow Wilson (#0001); John Morton Blum, Woodrow Wilson and the Politics of Morality (#0006); John A. Garraty, Woodrow Wilson: A Great Life in Brief (#0017); Arthur S. Link, Woodrow Wilson: A Brief Biography (#0029); and Arthur Walworth, Woodrow Wilson (#0036). Link is the preeminent Wilson scholar, having devoted over thirty years to his subject. His masterful five-volume political biography, Wilson (#0026), covers Wilson’s career and his times in great detail up to 1916. The first volume, Wilson: The Road to the White House (#0027), examines the period from 1902 to 1912.

While most older biographies have been omitted from this study, readers will find some useful. William B. Hale, author of Woodrow Wilson: The Story of His Life (#0022), was Wilson’s campaign manager, and he interviewed Wilson about his early life. Ray S. Baker, Woodrow Wilson: Life and Letters (#0003), wrote an eight-volume authorized biography that ends with the Armistice. Josephus Daniels, The Life of Woodrow Wilson, 1856-1924 (#0011), contributes an uncritical insider’s account as does Joseph P. Tumulty, Woodrow Wilson as I Know Him (#0035). Two distinguished journalists wrote early biographies: David Lawrence, The True Story of Woodrow Wilson (#0023), and William Allen White, Woodrow Wilson, The Man, His Times, and His Task (#0038).

Wilson’s early life has not escaped the attention of historians. See John M. Mulder, Woodrow Wilson: The Years of Preparation (#0047), and George C. Osborn, Woodrow Wilson: The Early Years (#0049). Both accounts deal with Wilson’s academic career as does Henry W. Bragdon, Woodrow Wilson: The Academic Years (#0056). Many of Wilson’s classmates and colleagues wrote about his university years, among them Hardin Craig, Woodrow Wilson at Princeton (#0059); Winthrop Daniels, Recollections of Woodrow Wilson (#0061); and Bliss Perry, And Gladly Teach (#0071 ).
