El volumen 49 de la BCRAE presenta la apuesta poética más importante del Lope de plenitud, el de los cuarenta años: las Rimas (1604), un cancionero petrarquista adaptado a sus propios gustos, usos y necesidades, con el que quiere presentarse como el primer poeta lírico del país, legítimo sucesor de Garcilaso.
La colección exhibe un magistral dominio del verso y de los distintos subgéneros de la lírica culta, del soneto a la égloga, de la silva a la elegía, pasando por la epístola o el epitafio, siempre con un trasfondo de verdad vivida, que sitúa a la voz autorial en el centro de la empresa poética.
La edición que presentamos respeta la integridad del cancionero y lo edita a partir de la impresión de 1604, en la que las Rimas adoptaron su forma definitiva. Como apéndice se incluye el célebre Arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo, añadido en la edición de 1609 de las Rimas a continuación de estas.
